Overflowing Merit
“अट्ठिमे, भिक्खवे, पुञ्ञाभिसन्दा कुसलाभिसन्दा सुखस्साहारा सोवग्गिका सुखविपाका सग्गसंवत्तनिका, इट्ठाय कन्ताय मनापाय हिताय सुखाय संवत्तन्ति। कतमे अट्ठ?
“Aṭṭhime, bhikkhave, puññābhisandā kusalābhisandā sukhassāhārā sovaggikā sukhavipākā saggasaṁvattanikā, iṭṭhāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saṁvattanti. Katame aṭṭha?
“Bhikkhus, there are these eight kinds of overflowing merit, overflowing goodness. They nurture happiness and are conducive to heaven, ripening in happiness and leading to heaven. They lead to what is likable, desirable, agreeable, to welfare and happiness. What eight?
इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको बुद्धं सरणं गतो होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पठमो पुञ्ञाभिसन्दो कुसलाभिसन्दो सुखस्साहारो सोवग्गिको सुखविपाको सग्गसंवत्तनिको, इट्ठाय कन्ताय मनापाय हिताय सुखाय संवत्तति।
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gato hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo puññābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro sovaggiko sukhavipāko saggasaṁvattaniko, iṭṭhāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saṁvattati.

पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको सङ्घं सरणं गतो होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, ततियो पुञ्ञाभिसन्दो कुसलाभिसन्दो सुखस्साहारो सोवग्गिको सुखविपाको सग्गसंवत्तनिको, इट्ठाय कन्ताय मनापाय हिताय सुखाय संवत्तति।

पञ्चिमानि, भिक्खवे, दानानि महादानानि अग्गञ्ञानि रत्तञ्ञानि वंसञ्ञानि पोराणानि असङ्किण्णानि असङ्किण्णपुब्बानि, न सङ्कियन्ति न सङ्कियिस्सन्ति, अप्पटिकुट्ठानि समणेहि ब्राह्मणेहि विञ्ञूहि। कतमानि पञ्च?
Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, dānāni mahādānāni aggaññāni rattaññāni vaṁsaññāni porāṇāni asaṅkiṇṇāni asaṅkiṇṇapubbāni, na saṅkiyanti na saṅkiyissanti, appaṭikuṭṭhāni1 samaṇehi brāhmaṇehi viññūhi. Katamāni pañca?
Bhikkhus, these five gifts are great, primordial, long-standing, traditional, and ancient. They are uncorrupted, as they have been since the beginning. They’re not being corrupted now nor will they be. Sensible ascetics and brahmins don’t look down on them. What five?
इध, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको पाणातिपातं पहाय पाणातिपाता पटिविरतो होति। पाणातिपाता पटिविरतो, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको अपरिमाणानं सत्तानं अभयं देति, अवेरं देति, अब्याबज्झं देति। अपरिमाणानं सत्तानं अभयं दत्वा अवेरं दत्वा अब्याबज्झं दत्वा अपरिमाणस्स अभयस्स अवेरस्स अब्याबज्झस्स भागी होति। इदं, भिक्खवे, पठमं दानं महादानं अग्गञ्ञं रत्तञ्ञं वंसञ्ञं पोराणं असङ्किण्णं असङ्किण्णपुब्बं, न सङ्कियति न सङ्कियिस्सति, अप्पटिकुट्ठं समणेहि ब्राह्मणेहि विञ्ञूहि। अयं, भिक्खवे, चतुत्थो पुञ्ञाभिसन्दो कुसलाभिसन्दो सुखस्साहारो सोवग्गिको सुखविपाको सग्गसंवत्तनिको, इट्ठाय कन्ताय मनापाय हिताय सुखाय संवत्तति।
Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako pāṇātipātaṁ pahāya pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti. Pāṇātipātā paṭivirato, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako aparimāṇānaṁ sattānaṁ abhayaṁ deti, averaṁ deti, abyābajjhaṁ2 deti. Aparimāṇānaṁ sattānaṁ abhayaṁ datvā averaṁ datvā abyābajjhaṁ datvā aparimāṇassa abhayassa averassa abyābajjhassa bhāgī hoti. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamaṁ dānaṁ mahādānaṁ aggaññaṁ rattaññaṁ vaṁsaññaṁ porāṇaṁ asaṅkiṇṇaṁ asaṅkiṇṇapubbaṁ, na saṅkiyati na saṅkiyissati, appaṭikuṭṭhaṁ samaṇehi brāhmaṇehi viññūhi. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, catuttho puññābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro sovaggiko sukhavipāko saggasaṁvattaniko, iṭṭhāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saṁvattati.
Firstly, a noble disciple gives up killing living creatures. By so doing they give to countless sentient beings the gift of freedom from fear, enmity, and ill will. And they themselves also enjoy unlimited freedom from fear, enmity, and ill will. This is the first gift that is a great offering, primordial, long-standing, traditional, and ancient. It is uncorrupted, as it has been since the beginning. It’s not being corrupted now nor will it be. Sensible ascetics and brahmins don’t look down on it. This is the fourth kind of overflowing merit …

सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठानं पहाय सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठाना पटिविरतो होति। सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठाना पटिविरतो, भिक्खवे, अरियसावको अपरिमाणानं सत्तानं अभयं देति अवेरं देति अब्याबज्झं देति। अपरिमाणानं सत्तानं अभयं दत्वा अवेरं दत्वा अब्याबज्झं दत्वा, अपरिमाणस्स अभयस्स अवेरस्स अब्याबज्झस्स भागी होति। इदं, भिक्खवे, पञ्चमं दानं महादानं अग्गञ्ञं रत्तञ्ञं वंसञ्ञं पोराणं असङ्किण्णं असङ्किण्णपुब्बं, न सङ्कियति न सङ्कियिस्सति, अप्पटिकुट्ठं समणेहि ब्राह्मणेहि विञ्ञूहि। अयं खो, भिक्खवे, अट्ठमो पुञ्ञाभिसन्दो कुसलाभिसन्दो सुखस्साहारो सोवग्गिको सुखविपाको सग्गसंवत्तनिको, इट्ठाय कन्ताय मनापाय हिताय सुखाय संवत्तति।
surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānaṁ pahāya surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭivirato hoti. Surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭivirato, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako aparimāṇānaṁ sattānaṁ abhayaṁ deti averaṁ deti abyābajjhaṁ deti. Aparimāṇānaṁ sattānaṁ abhayaṁ datvā averaṁ datvā abyābajjhaṁ datvā, aparimāṇassa abhayassa averassa abyābajjhassa bhāgī hoti. Idaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamaṁ dānaṁ mahādānaṁ aggaññaṁ rattaññaṁ vaṁsaññaṁ porāṇaṁ asaṅkiṇṇaṁ asaṅkiṇṇapubbaṁ, na saṅkiyati na saṅkiyissati, appaṭikuṭṭhaṁ samaṇehi brāhmaṇehi viññūhi. Ayaṁ kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭhamo puññābhisando kusalābhisando sukhassāhāro sovaggiko sukhavipāko saggasaṁvattaniko, iṭṭhāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saṁvattati.
Furthermore, a noble disciple gives up alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. By so doing they give to countless sentient beings the gift of freedom from fear, enmity, and ill will. And they themselves also enjoy unlimited freedom from fear, enmity, and ill will. This is the fifth gift that is a great offering, primordial, long-standing, traditional, and ancient. It is uncorrupted, as it has been since the beginning. It’s not being corrupted now nor will it be. Sensible ascetics and brahmins don’t look down on it. This is the eighth kind of overflowing merit …
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, अट्ठ पुञ्ञाभिसन्दा कुसलाभिसन्दा सुखस्साहारा सोवग्गिका सुखविपाका सग्गसंवत्तनिका, इट्ठाय कन्ताय मनापाय हिताय सुखाय संवत्तन्ती”ति।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭha puññābhisandā kusalābhisandā sukhassāhārā sovaggikā sukhavipākā saggasaṁvattanikā, iṭṭhāya kantāya manāpāya hitāya sukhāya saṁvattantī”ti.
