    Absolute neutrophil count

    Pronunciation

    Definition 1

A measure of the number of neutrophils in the blood. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell. They help the body fight infection. An absolute neutrophil count may be used to check for infection, inflammation, leukemia, and other conditions. Cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy, may reduce the absolute neutrophil count. Also called ANC. (NCI Dictionary)

    Definition 2

The real number of white blood cells (WBC) that are neutrophils. It is derived by multiplying the WBC count by the percent of neutrophils in the differential WBC count. The normal range for ANC is 1.5 to 8.0 (1,500 to 8,000/mm3). (NCI Thesaurus)

    Definition 3

A measurement of the neutrophils in a biological specimen. (NCI Thesaurus/CDISC)
