    Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

    Progressive and life-threatening pulmonary distress in the absence of an underlying pulmonary condition, usually following major trauma or surgery. Cases of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome are not included in this definition. (NCI Thesaurus)
