Getting Rich
एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे। अथ खो अनाथपिण्डिको गहपति येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो अनाथपिण्डिकं गहपतिं भगवा एतदवोच:
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“पञ्चिमे, गहपति, भोगानं आदिया। कतमे पञ्च?
“pañcime, gahapati, bhogānaṁ ādiyā. Katame pañca?
“Householder, there are these five reasons to get rich. What five?
इध, गहपति, अरियसावको उट्ठानवीरियाधिगतेहि भोगेहि बाहाबलपरिचितेहि सेदावक्खित्तेहि धम्मिकेहि धम्मलद्धेहि अत्तानं सुखेति पीणेति सम्मा सुखं परिहरति; मातापितरो सुखेति पीणेति सम्मा सुखं परिहरति; पुत्तदारदासकम्मकरपोरिसे सुखेति पीणेति सम्मा सुखं परिहरति। अयं पठमो भोगानं आदियो।
Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi attānaṁ sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati; mātāpitaro sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati; puttadāradāsakammakaraporise sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati. Ayaṁ paṭhamo bhogānaṁ ādiyo.
Firstly, with his legitimate wealth—earned by his efforts and initiative, built up with his own hands, gathered by the sweat of the brow—a noble disciple makes himself happy and pleased, keeping himself properly happy. He makes his mother and father happy … He makes his children, partners, bondservants, workers, and staff happy … This is the first reason to get rich.
पुन चपरं, गहपति, अरियसावको उट्ठानवीरियाधिगतेहि भोगेहि बाहाबलपरिचितेहि सेदावक्खित्तेहि धम्मिकेहि धम्मलद्धेहि मित्तामच्चे सुखेति पीणेति सम्मा सुखं परिहरति। अयं दुतियो भोगानं आदियो।
Puna caparaṁ, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi mittāmacce sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati. Ayaṁ dutiyo bhogānaṁ ādiyo.
Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he makes his friends and colleagues happy … This is the second reason to get rich.
पुन चपरं, गहपति, अरियसावको उट्ठानवीरियाधिगतेहि भोगेहि बाहाबलपरिचितेहि सेदावक्खित्तेहि धम्मिकेहि धम्मलद्धेहि या ता होन्ति आपदा—अग्गितो वा उदकतो वा राजतो वा चोरतो वा अप्पियतो वा दायादतो—तथारूपासु आपदासु भोगेहि परियोधाय वत्तति, सोत्थिं अत्तानं करोति। अयं ततियो भोगानं आदियो।
Puna caparaṁ, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi yā tā honti āpadā—aggito vā udakato vā rājato vā corato vā appiyato vā dāyādato—tathārūpāsu āpadāsu bhogehi pariyodhāya vattati, sotthiṁ attānaṁ karoti. Ayaṁ tatiyo bhogānaṁ ādiyo.
Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he protects himself against losses from such things as fire, water, kings, bandits, or unloved heirs. He keeps himself safe. This is the third reason to get rich.
पुन चपरं, गहपति, अरियसावको उट्ठानवीरियाधिगतेहि भोगेहि बाहाबलपरिचितेहि सेदावक्खित्तेहि धम्मिकेहि धम्मलद्धेहि पञ्चबलिं कत्ता होति। ञातिबलिं, अतिथिबलिं, पुब्बपेतबलिं, राजबलिं, देवताबलिं—अयं चतुत्थो भोगानं आदियो।
Puna caparaṁ, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi pañcabaliṁ kattā hoti. Ñātibaliṁ, atithibaliṁ, pubbapetabaliṁ, rājabaliṁ, devatābaliṁ—ayaṁ catuttho bhogānaṁ ādiyo.
Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he makes five spirit-offerings: to relatives, guests, ancestors, king, and deities. This is the fourth reason to get rich.
पुन चपरं, गहपति, अरियसावको उट्ठानवीरियाधिगतेहि भोगेहि बाहाबलपरिचितेहि सेदावक्खित्तेहि धम्मिकेहि धम्मलद्धेहि ये ते समणब्राह्मणा मदप्पमादा पटिविरता खन्तिसोरच्चे निविट्ठा एकमत्तानं दमेन्ति एकमत्तानं समेन्ति एकमत्तानं परिनिब्बापेन्ति, तथारूपेसु समणब्राह्मणेसु उद्धग्गिकं दक्खिणं पतिट्ठापेति सोवग्गिकं सुखविपाकं सग्गसंवत्तनिकं। अयं पञ्चमो भोगानं आदियो।
Puna caparaṁ, gahapati, ariyasāvako uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi ye te samaṇabrāhmaṇā madappamādā paṭiviratā khantisoracce niviṭṭhā ekamattānaṁ damenti ekamattānaṁ samenti ekamattānaṁ parinibbāpenti, tathārūpesu samaṇabrāhmaṇesu uddhaggikaṁ dakkhiṇaṁ patiṭṭhāpeti sovaggikaṁ sukhavipākaṁ saggasaṁvattanikaṁ. Ayaṁ pañcamo bhogānaṁ ādiyo.
Furthermore, with his legitimate wealth he establishes an uplifting religious donation for ascetics and brahmins—those who avoid intoxication and negligence, are settled in patience and gentleness, and who tame, calm, and extinguish themselves—that’s conducive to heaven, ripens in happiness, and leads to heaven. This is the fifth reason to get rich.
इमे खो, गहपति, पञ्च भोगानं आदिया।
Ime kho, gahapati, pañca bhogānaṁ ādiyā.
These are the five reasons to get rich.
तस्स चे, गहपति, अरियसावकस्स इमे पञ्च भोगानं आदिये आदियतो भोगा परिक्खयं गच्छन्ति, तस्स एवं होति: ‘ये वत भोगानं आदिया ते चाहं आदियामि भोगा च मे परिक्खयं गच्छन्तीऽति। इतिस्स होति अविप्पटिसारो।
Tassa ce, gahapati, ariyasāvakassa ime pañca bhogānaṁ ādiye ādiyato bhogā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘ye vata bhogānaṁ ādiyā te cāhaṁ ādiyāmi bhogā ca me parikkhayaṁ gacchantī’ti. Itissa hoti avippaṭisāro.
Now if the riches a noble disciple gets for these five reasons run out, he thinks: ‘So, the riches I have obtained for these reasons are running out.’ And so he has no regrets.
तस्स चे, गहपति, अरियसावकस्स इमे पञ्च भोगानं आदिये आदियतो भोगा अभिवड्ढन्ति, तस्स एवं होति: ‘ये वत भोगानं आदिया ते चाहं आदियामि भोगा च मे अभिवड्ढन्तीऽति। इतिस्स होति उभयेनेव अविप्पटिसारोति।
Tassa ce, gahapati, ariyasāvakassa ime pañca bhogānaṁ ādiye ādiyato bhogā abhivaḍḍhanti, tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘ye vata bhogānaṁ ādiyā te cāhaṁ ādiyāmi bhogā ca me abhivaḍḍhantī’ti. Itissa hoti1 ubhayeneva avippaṭisāroti.
But if the riches a noble disciple gets for these five reasons increase, he thinks: ‘So, the riches I have obtained for these reasons are increasing.’ And so he has no regrets in both cases.
भुत्ता भोगा भता भच्चा, वितिण्णा आपदासु मे; उद्धग्गा दक्खिणा दिन्ना, अथो पञ्चबलीकता; उपट्ठिता सीलवन्तो, सञ्ञता ब्रह्मचारयो।
Bhuttā bhogā bhatā bhaccā, vitiṇṇā āpadāsu me; Uddhaggā dakkhiṇā dinnā, atho pañcabalīkatā; Upaṭṭhitā sīlavanto, saññatā brahmacārayo.
‘I’ve enjoyed my wealth,
supporting those who depend on me; I’ve overcome losses; I’ve given uplifting religious donations; and made the five spirit-offerings. I have looked after the ethical and disciplined spiritual practitioners.
यदत्थं भोगं इच्छेय्य, पण्डितो घरमावसं; सो मे अत्थो अनुप्पत्तो, कतं अननुतापियं।
Yadatthaṁ bhogaṁ iccheyya, paṇḍito gharamāvasaṁ; So me attho anuppatto, kataṁ ananutāpiyaṁ.
I’ve achieved the purpose for which an astute lay person wishes to gain wealth. I don’t regret what I’ve done.’
एतं अनुस्सरं मच्चो, अरियधम्मे ठितो नरो; इधेव नं पसंसन्ति, पेच्च सग्गे पमोदती”ति।
Etaṁ2 anussaraṁ macco, ariyadhamme ṭhito naro; Idheva naṁ pasaṁsanti, pecca sagge pamodatī”ti.
A mortal person who recollects this stands firm in the teaching of the noble ones. They’re praised in this life by the astute, and they depart to rejoice in heaven.”
