Grounds for Resentment
“दसयिमानि, भिक्खवे, आघातवत्थूनि। कतमानि दस? ‘अनत्थं मे अचरीऽति आघातं बन्धति; ‘अनत्थं मे चरतीऽति आघातं बन्धति; ‘अनत्थं मे चरिस्सतीऽति आघातं बन्धति; ‘पियस्स मे मनापस्स अनत्थं अचरीऽति …पे… ‘अनत्थं चरतीऽति …पे… ‘अनत्थं चरिस्सतीऽति आघातं बन्धति, ‘अप्पियस्स मे अमनापस्स अत्थं अचरीऽति …पे… ‘अत्थं चरतीऽति …पे… ‘अत्थं चरिस्सतीऽति आघातं बन्धति; अट्ठाने च कुप्पति—इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, दस आघातवत्थूनी”ति।
“Dasayimāni, bhikkhave, āghātavatthūni. Katamāni dasa? ‘Anatthaṁ me acarī’ti āghātaṁ bandhati; ‘anatthaṁ me caratī’ti āghātaṁ bandhati; ‘anatthaṁ me carissatī’ti āghātaṁ bandhati; ‘piyassa me manāpassa anatthaṁ acarī’ti …pe… ‘anatthaṁ caratī’ti …pe… ‘anatthaṁ carissatī’ti āghātaṁ bandhati, ‘appiyassa me amanāpassa atthaṁ acarī’ti …pe… ‘atthaṁ caratī’ti …pe… ‘atthaṁ carissatī’ti āghātaṁ bandhati; aṭṭhāne ca kuppati—imāni kho, bhikkhave, dasa āghātavatthūnī”ti.
“Bhikkhus, there are ten grounds for resentment. What ten? Thinking: ‘They did wrong to me,’ you harbor resentment. Thinking: ‘They are doing wrong to me’ … ‘They will do wrong to me’ … ‘They did wrong by someone I love’ … ‘They are doing wrong by someone I love’ … ‘They will do wrong by someone I love’ … ‘They helped someone I dislike’ … ‘They are helping someone I dislike’ … Thinking: ‘They will help someone I dislike,’ you harbor resentment. You get angry for no reason. These are the ten grounds for resentment.”
