Āghātavatthusutta
Grounds for Resentment
“नवयिमानि, भिक्खवे, आघातवत्थूनि। कतमानि नव? ‘अनत्थं मे अचरीऽति आघातं बन्धति; ‘अनत्थं मे चरतीऽति आघातं बन्धति; ‘अनत्थं मे चरिस्सतीऽति आघातं बन्धति; ‘पियस्स मे मनापस्स अनत्थं अचरीऽति …पे… ‘अनत्थं चरतीऽति …पे… ‘अनत्थं चरिस्सतीऽति आघातं बन्धति; ‘अप्पियस्स मे अमनापस्स अत्थं अचरीऽति …पे… ‘अत्थं चरतीऽति …पे… ‘अत्थं चरिस्सतीऽति आघातं बन्धति। इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, नव आघातवत्थूनी”ति।
“Navayimāni, bhikkhave, āghātavatthūni. Katamāni nava? ‘Anatthaṁ me acarī’ti āghātaṁ bandhati; ‘anatthaṁ me caratī’ti āghātaṁ bandhati; ‘anatthaṁ me carissatī’ti āghātaṁ bandhati; ‘piyassa me manāpassa anatthaṁ acarī’ti …pe… ‘anatthaṁ caratī’ti …pe… ‘anatthaṁ carissatī’ti āghātaṁ bandhati; ‘appiyassa me amanāpassa atthaṁ acarī’ti …pe… ‘atthaṁ caratī’ti …pe… ‘atthaṁ carissatī’ti āghātaṁ bandhati. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, nava āghātavatthūnī”ti.
“Bhikkhus, there are nine grounds for resentment. What nine? Thinking: ‘They did wrong to me,’ you harbor resentment. Thinking: ‘They are doing wrong to me’ … ‘They will do wrong to me’ … ‘They did wrong to someone I love’ … ‘They are doing wrong to someone I love’ … ‘They will do wrong to someone I love’ … ‘They helped someone I dislike’ … ‘They are helping someone I dislike’ … Thinking: ‘They will help someone I dislike,’ you harbor resentment. These are the nine grounds for resentment.”
