    Cannot Endure

    “पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो थेरो भिक्खु सब्रह्मचारीनं अप्पियो च होति अमनापो च अगरु च अभावनीयो च। कतमेहि पञ्चहि? अक्खमो होति रूपानं, अक्खमो सद्दानं, अक्खमो गन्धानं, अक्खमो रसानं, अक्खमो फोट्ठब्बानं—इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो थेरो भिक्खु सब्रह्मचारीनं अप्पियो च होति अमनापो च अगरु च अभावनीयो च।

    “Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato thero bhikkhu sabrahmacārīnaṁ appiyo ca hoti amanāpo ca agaru ca abhāvanīyo ca. Katamehi pañcahi? Akkhamo hoti rūpānaṁ, akkhamo saddānaṁ, akkhamo gandhānaṁ, akkhamo rasānaṁ, akkhamo phoṭṭhabbānaṁ—imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato thero bhikkhu sabrahmacārīnaṁ appiyo ca hoti amanāpo ca agaru ca abhāvanīyo ca.

    “Bhikkhus, a senior bhikkhu with five qualities is unlikable and unlovable to their spiritual companions, not respected or admired. What five? They can’t endure sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches. A senior bhikkhu with these five qualities is unlikable and unlovable to their spiritual companions, not respected or admired.

    पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो थेरो भिक्खु सब्रह्मचारीनं पियो च होति मनापो च गरु च भावनीयो च। कतमेहि पञ्चहि? खमो होति रूपानं, खमो सद्दानं, खमो गन्धानं, खमो रसानं, खमो फोट्ठब्बानं—इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो थेरो भिक्खु सब्रह्मचारीनं पियो च होति मनापो च गरु च भावनीयो चा”ति।

    A senior bhikkhu with five qualities is dear and beloved to their spiritual companions, respected and admired. What five? They can endure sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches.
