तत्र खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो भिक्खू आमन्तेसि …पे… छहावुसो, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु अलं अत्तनो, अलं परेसं। कतमेहि छहि? इधावुसो, भिक्खु खिप्पनिसन्ति च होति कुसलेसु धम्मेसु; सुतानञ्च धम्मानं धारणजातिको होति; धातानञ्च धम्मानं अत्थूपपरिक्खिता होति; अत्थमञ्ञाय धम्ममञ्ञाय धम्मानुधम्मप्पटिपन्नो च होति; कल्याणवाचो च होति कल्याणवाक्करणो, पोरिया वाचाय समन्नागतो विस्सट्ठाय अनेलगळाय अत्थस्स विञ्ञापनिया; सन्दस्सको च होति समादपको समुत्तेजको सम्पहंसको सब्रह्मचारीनं। इमेहि खो, आवुसो, छहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु अलं अत्तनो, अलं परेसं।
Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi …pe… chahāvuso, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu alaṁ attano, alaṁ paresaṁ. Katamehi chahi? Idhāvuso, bhikkhu khippanisanti ca hoti kusalesu dhammesu; sutānañca dhammānaṁ dhāraṇajātiko hoti; dhātānañca dhammānaṁ atthūpaparikkhitā hoti; atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammappaṭipanno ca hoti; kalyāṇavāco ca hoti kalyāṇavākkaraṇo, poriyā vācāya samannāgato vissaṭṭhāya anelagaḷāya atthassa viññāpaniyā; sandassako ca hoti samādapako samuttejako sampahaṁsako sabrahmacārīnaṁ. Imehi kho, āvuso, chahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu alaṁ attano, alaṁ paresaṁ.
There Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: “Friends, a bhikkhu with six qualities is good enough for themselves and others. What six? A bhikkhu is quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings. They readily memorize the teachings they’ve heard. They examine the meaning of teachings they’ve memorized. Understanding the meaning and the teaching, they practice accordingly. They’re a good speaker. Their voice is polished, clear, articulate, and expresses the meaning. They educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire their spiritual companions. A bhikkhu with these six qualities is good enough for themselves and others.
