    Mangoes

    “चत्तारिमानि, भिक्खवे, अम्बानि। कतमानि चत्तारि?

    “Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, ambāni. Katamāni cattāri?

    “Bhikkhus, there are these four mangoes. What four?

      आमं पक्कवण्णि,

      Āmaṁ pakkavaṇṇi,

      One is unripe but seems ripe,

    पक्कं आमवण्णि,

    pakkaṁ āmavaṇṇi,

    one is ripe but seems unripe,

    आमं आमवण्णि,

    āmaṁ āmavaṇṇi,

    one is unripe and seems unripe, and

    पक्कं पक्कवण्णि—

    pakkaṁ pakkavaṇṇi—

    one is ripe and seems ripe.

    इमानि खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारि अम्बानि।

    Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri ambāni.

    These are the four mangoes.

    एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो अम्बूपमा पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे चत्तारो?

    Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, cattāro1 ambūpamā puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro?

    In the same way, these four people similar to mangoes are found in the world. What four?

      आमो पक्कवण्णी,

      Āmo pakkavaṇṇī,

      One is unripe but seems ripe,

    पक्को आमवण्णी,

    pakko āmavaṇṇī,

    one is ripe but seems unripe,

    आमो आमवण्णी,

    āmo āmavaṇṇī,

    one is unripe and seems unripe, and

    पक्को पक्कवण्णी।

    pakko pakkavaṇṇī.

    one is ripe and seems ripe.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो आमो होति पक्कवण्णी? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स पासादिकं होति अभिक्कन्तं पटिक्कन्तं आलोकितं विलोकितं समिञ्जितं पसारितं सङ्घाटिपत्तचीवरधारणं। सो ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो आमो होति पक्कवण्णी। सेय्यथापि तं, भिक्खवे, अम्बं आमं पक्कवण्णि; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि।

    Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo āmo hoti pakkavaṇṇī? Idha, bhikkhave, ekaccassa puggalassa pāsādikaṁ hoti abhikkantaṁ paṭikkantaṁ ālokitaṁ vilokitaṁ samiñjitaṁ pasāritaṁ saṅghāṭipattacīvaradhāraṇaṁ. So ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo āmo hoti pakkavaṇṇī. Seyyathāpi taṁ, bhikkhave, ambaṁ āmaṁ pakkavaṇṇi; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi.

    And how is a person unripe but seems ripe? It’s when a person is impressive when going out and coming back, when looking ahead and aside, when bending and extending the limbs, and when bearing the outer robe, bowl and robes. But they don’t really understand: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’. That’s how a person is unripe but seems ripe. That person is like a mango that’s unripe but seems ripe, I say.

    कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो पक्को होति आमवण्णी? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चस्स पुग्गलस्स न पासादिकं होति अभिक्कन्तं पटिक्कन्तं आलोकितं विलोकितं समिञ्जितं पसारितं सङ्घाटिपत्तचीवरधारणं। सो ‘इदं दुक्खन्ऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति …पे… ‘अयं दुक्खनिरोधगामिनी पटिपदाऽति यथाभूतं पजानाति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो पक्को होति आमवण्णी। सेय्यथापि तं, भिक्खवे, अम्बं पक्कं आमवण्णि; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि।

    इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो अम्बूपमा पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिन्”ति।

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro ambūpamā puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.

    These four people similar to mangoes are found in the world.”
