Ānaṇyasutta
Debtlessness
अथ खो अनाथपिण्डिको गहपति येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो अनाथपिण्डिकं गहपतिं भगवा एतदवोच:
Atha kho anāthapiṇḍiko gahapati yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho anāthapiṇḍikaṁ gahapatiṁ bhagavā etadavoca:
Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“चत्तारिमानि, गहपति, सुखानि अधिगमनीयानि गिहिना कामभोगिना कालेन कालं समयेन समयं उपादाय। कतमानि चत्तारि? अत्थिसुखं, भोगसुखं, आनण्यसुखं, अनवज्जसुखं।
“Cattārimāni, gahapati, sukhāni adhigamanīyāni gihinā kāmabhoginā kālena kālaṁ samayena samayaṁ upādāya. Katamāni cattāri? Atthisukhaṁ, bhogasukhaṁ, ānaṇyasukhaṁ, anavajjasukhaṁ.
“Householder, these four kinds of happiness can be earned by a layperson who enjoys sensual pleasures, depending on time and occasion. What four? The happiness of ownership, using wealth, debtlessness, and blamelessness.
कतमञ्च, गहपति, अत्थिसुखं? इध, गहपति, कुलपुत्तस्स भोगा होन्ति उट्ठानवीरियाधिगता बाहाबलपरिचिता सेदावक्खित्ता धम्मिका धम्मलद्धा। सो ‘भोगा मे अत्थि उट्ठानवीरियाधिगता बाहाबलपरिचिता सेदावक्खित्ता धम्मिका धम्मलद्धाऽति अधिगच्छति सुखं, अधिगच्छति सोमनस्सं। इदं वुच्चति, गहपति, अत्थिसुखं।
Katamañca, gahapati, atthisukhaṁ? Idha, gahapati, kulaputtassa bhogā honti uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatā bāhābalaparicitā sedāvakkhittā dhammikā dhammaladdhā. So ‘bhogā me atthi uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatā bāhābalaparicitā sedāvakkhittā dhammikā dhammaladdhā’ti adhigacchati sukhaṁ, adhigacchati somanassaṁ. Idaṁ vuccati, gahapati, atthisukhaṁ.
And what is the happiness of ownership? It’s when a gentleman owns legitimate wealth that he has earned by his own efforts and initiative, built up with his own hands, gathered by the sweat of the brow. When he reflects on this, he’s filled with pleasure and happiness. This is called ‘the happiness of ownership’.
कतमञ्च, गहपति, भोगसुखं? इध, गहपति, कुलपुत्तो उट्ठानवीरियाधिगतेहि भोगेहि बाहाबलपरिचितेहि सेदावक्खित्तेहि धम्मिकेहि धम्मलद्धेहि परिभुञ्जति पुञ्ञानि च करोति। सो ‘उट्ठानवीरियाधिगतेहि भोगेहि बाहाबलपरिचितेहि सेदावक्खित्तेहि धम्मिकेहि धम्मलद्धेहि परिभुञ्जामि पुञ्ञानि च करोमीऽति अधिगच्छति सुखं, अधिगच्छति सोमनस्सं। इदं वुच्चति, गहपति, भोगसुखं।
Katamañca, gahapati, bhogasukhaṁ? Idha, gahapati, kulaputto uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi paribhuñjati puññāni ca karoti. So ‘uṭṭhānavīriyādhigatehi bhogehi bāhābalaparicitehi sedāvakkhittehi dhammikehi dhammaladdhehi paribhuñjāmi puññāni ca karomī’ti adhigacchati sukhaṁ, adhigacchati somanassaṁ. Idaṁ vuccati, gahapati, bhogasukhaṁ.
And what is the happiness of using wealth? It’s when a gentleman uses his legitimate wealth, and makes merit with it. When he reflects on this, he’s filled with pleasure and happiness. This is called ‘the happiness of using wealth’.
कतमञ्च, गहपति, आनण्यसुखं? इध, गहपति, कुलपुत्तो न कस्सचि किञ्चि धारेति अप्पं वा बहुं वा। सो ‘न कस्सचि किञ्चि धारेमि अप्पं वा बहुं वाऽति अधिगच्छति सुखं, अधिगच्छति सोमनस्सं। इदं वुच्चति, गहपति, आनण्यसुखं।
Katamañca, gahapati, ānaṇyasukhaṁ? Idha, gahapati, kulaputto na kassaci kiñci dhāreti1 appaṁ vā bahuṁ vā. So ‘na kassaci kiñci dhāremi appaṁ vā bahuṁ vā’ti adhigacchati sukhaṁ, adhigacchati somanassaṁ. Idaṁ vuccati, gahapati, ānaṇyasukhaṁ.
And what is the happiness of debtlessness? It’s when a gentleman owes no debt, large or small, to anyone. When he reflects on this, he’s filled with pleasure and happiness. This is called ‘the happiness of debtlessness’.
कतमञ्च, गहपति, अनवज्जसुखं? इध, गहपति, अरियसावको अनवज्जेन कायकम्मेन समन्नागतो होति, अनवज्जेन वचीकम्मेन समन्नागतो होति, अनवज्जेन मनोकम्मेन समन्नागतो होति। सो ‘अनवज्जेनम्हि कायकम्मेन समन्नागतो, अनवज्जेन वचीकम्मेन समन्नागतो, अनवज्जेन मनोकम्मेन समन्नागतोऽति अधिगच्छति सुखं, अधिगच्छति सोमनस्सं। इदं वुच्चति, गहपति, अनवज्जसुखं।
Katamañca, gahapati, anavajjasukhaṁ? Idha, gahapati, ariyasāvako anavajjena kāyakammena samannāgato hoti, anavajjena vacīkammena samannāgato hoti, anavajjena manokammena samannāgato hoti. So ‘anavajjenamhi kāyakammena samannāgato, anavajjena vacīkammena samannāgato, anavajjena manokammena samannāgato’ti adhigacchati sukhaṁ, adhigacchati somanassaṁ. Idaṁ vuccati, gahapati, anavajjasukhaṁ.
And what is the happiness of blamelessness? It’s when a noble disciple has blameless conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. When he reflects on this, he’s filled with pleasure and happiness. This is called ‘the happiness of blamelessness’.
इमानि खो, गहपति, चत्तारि सुखानि अधिगमनीयानि गिहिना कामभोगिना कालेन कालं समयेन समयं उपादायाति।
Imāni kho, gahapati, cattāri sukhāni adhigamanīyāni gihinā kāmabhoginā kālena kālaṁ samayena samayaṁ upādāyāti.
These four kinds of happiness can be earned by a layperson who enjoys sensual pleasures, depending on time and occasion.
आनण्यसुखं ञत्वान, अथो अत्थिसुखं परं; भुञ्जं भोगसुखं मच्चो, ततो पञ्ञा विपस्सति।
Ānaṇyasukhaṁ ñatvāna, Atho atthisukhaṁ paraṁ; Bhuñjaṁ bhogasukhaṁ2 macco, Tato paññā vipassati.
Knowing the happiness of debtlessness, and the extra happiness of possession, a mortal enjoying the happiness of using wealth, then sees clearly with wisdom.
विपस्समानो जानाति, उभो भोगे सुमेधसो; अनवज्जसुखस्सेतं, कलं नाग्घति सोळसिन्”ति।
Vipassamāno jānāti, ubho bhoge sumedhaso; Anavajjasukhassetaṁ, kalaṁ nāgghati soḷasin”ti.
Seeing clearly, a clever person knows both kinds of happiness: the other kind is not worth a sixteenth part of the happiness of blamelessness.”
