    With Aṅgulimāla

    एवं मे सुतं—एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।

    Evaṁ me sutaṁ—ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

    So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

    तेन खो पन समयेन रञ्ञो पसेनदिस्स कोसलस्स विजिते चोरो अङ्गुलिमालो नाम होति लुद्दो लोहितपाणि हतपहते निविट्ठो अदयापन्नो पाणभूतेसु। तेन गामापि अगामा कता, निगमापि अनिगमा कता, जनपदापि अजनपदा कता। सो मनुस्से वधित्वा वधित्वा अङ्गुलीनं मालं धारेति।

    Tena kho pana samayena rañño pasenadissa kosalassa vijite coro aṅgulimālo nāma hoti luddo lohitapāṇi hatapahate niviṭṭho adayāpanno pāṇabhūtesu. Tena gāmāpi agāmā katā, nigamāpi anigamā katā, janapadāpi ajanapadā katā. So manusse vadhitvā vadhitvā aṅgulīnaṁ mālaṁ dhāreti.

    Now at that time in the realm of King Pasenadi of Kosala there was a bandit named Aṅgulimāla. He was violent, bloody-handed, a hardened killer, merciless to living beings. He laid waste to villages, towns, and countries. He was constantly murdering people, and he wore their fingers as a necklace.

    अथ खो भगवा पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय सावत्थिं पिण्डाय पाविसि। सावत्थियं पिण्डाय चरित्वा पच्छाभत्तं पिण्डपातपटिक्कन्तो सेनासनं संसामेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय येन चोरो अङ्गुलिमालो तेनद्धानमग्गं पटिपज्जि।

    Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi. Sāvatthiyaṁ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto senāsanaṁ saṁsāmetvā pattacīvaramādāya yena coro aṅgulimālo tenaddhānamaggaṁ paṭipajji.

    Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms. Then, after the meal, on his return from almsround, he set his lodgings in order and, taking his bowl and robe, he walked down the road that led to Aṅgulimāla.

    अद्दसासुं खो गोपालका पसुपालका कस्सका पथाविनो भगवन्तं येन चोरो अङ्गुलिमालो तेनद्धानमग्गपटिपन्नं। दिस्वान भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “मा, समण, एतं मग्गं पटिपज्जि। एतस्मिं, समण, मग्गे चोरो अङ्गुलिमालो नाम लुद्दो लोहितपाणि हतपहते निविट्ठो अदयापन्नो पाणभूतेसु। तेन गामापि अगामा कता, निगमापि अनिगमा कता, जनपदापि अजनपदा कता। सो मनुस्से वधित्वा वधित्वा अङ्गुलीनं मालं धारेति। एतञ्हि, समण, मग्गं दसपि पुरिसा वीसम्पि पुरिसा तिंसम्पि पुरिसा चत्तारीसम्पि पुरिसा पञ्ञासम्पि पुरिसा सङ्करित्वा सङ्करित्वा पटिपज्जन्ति। तेपि चोरस्स अङ्गुलिमालस्स हत्थत्थं गच्छन्ती”ति। एवं वुत्ते, भगवा तुण्हीभूतो अगमासि।

    Addasāsuṁ kho gopālakā pasupālakā kassakā pathāvino bhagavantaṁ yena coro aṅgulimālo tenaddhānamaggapaṭipannaṁ. Disvāna bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “mā, samaṇa, etaṁ maggaṁ paṭipajji. Etasmiṁ, samaṇa, magge coro aṅgulimālo nāma luddo lohitapāṇi hatapahate niviṭṭho adayāpanno pāṇabhūtesu. Tena gāmāpi agāmā katā, nigamāpi anigamā katā, janapadāpi ajanapadā katā. So manusse vadhitvā vadhitvā aṅgulīnaṁ mālaṁ dhāreti. Etañhi, samaṇa, maggaṁ dasapi purisā vīsampi purisā tiṁsampi purisā cattārīsampi purisā paññāsampi purisā saṅkaritvā1 saṅkaritvā paṭipajjanti. Tepi corassa aṅgulimālassa hatthatthaṁ gacchantī”ti. Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā tuṇhībhūto agamāsi.

    The cowherds, shepherds, farmers, and travelers saw him on the road, and said to him, “Don’t take this road, ascetic. On this road there is a bandit named Aṅgulimāla. He is violent, bloody-handed, a hardened killer, merciless to living beings. He has laid waste to villages, towns, and countries. He is constantly murdering people, and he wears their fingers as a necklace. People travel along this road only after banding closely together in groups of ten, twenty, thirty, forty, or fifty. Still they meet their end by Aṅgulimāla’s hand.” But when they said this, the Buddha went on in silence.

    दुतियम्पि खो गोपालका …पे… ततियम्पि खो गोपालका पसुपालका कस्सका पथाविनो भगवन्तं एतदवोचुं: “मा, समण, एतं मग्गं पटिपज्जि, एतस्मिं समण मग्गे चोरो अङ्गुलिमालो नाम लुद्दो लोहितपाणि हतपहते निविट्ठो अदयापन्नो पाणभूतेसु, तेन गामापि अगामा कता, निगमापि अनिगमा कता, जनपदापि अजनपदा कता। सो मनुस्से वधित्वा वधित्वा अङ्गुलीनं मालं धारेति। एतञ्हि समण मग्गं दसपि पुरिसा वीसम्पि पुरिसा तिंसम्पि पुरिसा चत्तारीसम्पि पुरिसा पञ्ञासम्पि पुरिसा सङ्करित्वा सङ्करित्वा पटिपज्जन्ति। तेपि चोरस्स अङ्गुलिमालस्स हत्थत्थं गच्छन्ती”ति।

    Dutiyampi kho gopālakā …pe… tatiyampi kho gopālakā pasupālakā kassakā pathāvino bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ: “mā, samaṇa, etaṁ maggaṁ paṭipajji, etasmiṁ samaṇa magge coro aṅgulimālo nāma luddo lohitapāṇi hatapahate niviṭṭho adayāpanno pāṇabhūtesu, tena gāmāpi agāmā katā, nigamāpi anigamā katā, janapadāpi ajanapadā katā. So manusse vadhitvā vadhitvā aṅgulīnaṁ mālaṁ dhāreti. Etañhi samaṇa maggaṁ dasapi purisā vīsampi purisā tiṁsampi purisā cattārīsampi purisā paññāsampi purisā saṅkaritvā saṅkaritvā paṭipajjanti. Tepi corassa aṅgulimālassa hatthatthaṁ gacchantī”ti.

    For a second time … and a third time, they urged the Buddha to turn back.

    अथ खो भगवा तुण्हीभूतो अगमासि।

    Atha kho bhagavā tuṇhībhūto agamāsi.

    But when they said this, the Buddha went on in silence.

    अद्दसा खो चोरो अङ्गुलिमालो भगवन्तं दूरतोव आगच्छन्तं। दिस्वानस्स एतदहोसि: “अच्छरियं वत भो, अब्भुतं वत भो। इमञ्हि मग्गं दसपि पुरिसा वीसम्पि पुरिसा तिंसम्पि पुरिसा चत्तारीसम्पि पुरिसा पञ्ञासम्पि पुरिसा सङ्करित्वा सङ्करित्वा पटिपज्जन्ति। तेपि मम हत्थत्थं गच्छन्ति। अथ च पनायं समणो एको अदुतियो पसय्ह मञ्ञे आगच्छति। यन्नूनाहं इमं समणं जीविता वोरोपेय्यन्”ति।

    Addasā kho coro aṅgulimālo bhagavantaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ. Disvānassa etadahosi: “acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho. Imañhi maggaṁ dasapi purisā vīsampi purisā tiṁsampi purisā cattārīsampi purisā paññāsampi purisā saṅkaritvā saṅkaritvā paṭipajjanti. Tepi mama hatthatthaṁ gacchanti. Atha ca panāyaṁ samaṇo eko adutiyo pasayha maññe āgacchati. Yannūnāhaṁ imaṁ samaṇaṁ jīvitā voropeyyan”ti.

    The bandit Aṅgulimāla saw the Buddha coming off in the distance, and thought, “Oh, how incredible, how amazing! People travel along this road only after banding closely together in groups of ten, twenty, thirty, forty, or fifty. Still they meet their end by my hand. But still this ascetic comes along alone and unaccompanied, like he had beaten me already. Why don’t I take his life?”

    अथ खो चोरो अङ्गुलिमालो असिचम्मं गहेत्वा धनुकलापं सन्नय्हित्वा भगवन्तं पिट्ठितो पिट्ठितो अनुबन्धि। अथ खो भगवा तथारूपं इद्धाभिसङ्खारं अभिसङ्खासि यथा चोरो अङ्गुलिमालो भगवन्तं पकतिया गच्छन्तं सब्बथामेन गच्छन्तो न सक्कोति सम्पापुणितुं।

    Atha kho coro aṅgulimālo asicammaṁ gahetvā dhanukalāpaṁ sannayhitvā bhagavantaṁ piṭṭhito piṭṭhito anubandhi. Atha kho bhagavā tathārūpaṁ iddhābhisaṅkhāraṁ abhisaṅkhāsi2 yathā coro aṅgulimālo bhagavantaṁ pakatiyā gacchantaṁ sabbathāmena gacchanto na sakkoti sampāpuṇituṁ.

    Then Aṅgulimāla donned his sword and shield, fastened his bow and arrows, and followed behind the Buddha. But the Buddha used his psychic power to will that Aṅgulimāla could not catch up with him no matter how hard he tried, even though the Buddha kept walking at a normal speed.

    अथ खो चोरस्स अङ्गुलिमालस्स एतदहोसि: “अच्छरियं वत भो, अब्भुतं वत भो। अहञ्हि पुब्बे हत्थिम्पि धावन्तं अनुपतित्वा गण्हामि, अस्सम्पि धावन्तं अनुपतित्वा गण्हामि, रथम्पि धावन्तं अनुपतित्वा गण्हामि, मिगम्पि धावन्तं अनुपतित्वा गण्हामि; अथ च पनाहं इमं समणं पकतिया गच्छन्तं सब्बथामेन गच्छन्तो न सक्कोमि सम्पापुणितुन्”ति।

    Atha kho corassa aṅgulimālassa etadahosi: “acchariyaṁ vata bho, abbhutaṁ vata bho. Ahañhi pubbe hatthimpi dhāvantaṁ anupatitvā gaṇhāmi, assampi dhāvantaṁ anupatitvā gaṇhāmi, rathampi dhāvantaṁ anupatitvā gaṇhāmi, migampi dhāvantaṁ anupatitvā gaṇhāmi; atha ca panāhaṁ imaṁ samaṇaṁ pakatiyā gacchantaṁ sabbathāmena gacchanto na sakkomi sampāpuṇitun”ti.

    Then Aṅgulimāla thought, “Oh, how incredible, how amazing! Previously, even when I’ve chased a speeding elephant, horse, chariot or deer, I’ve always caught up with them. But I can’t catch up with this ascetic no matter how hard I try, even though he’s walking at a normal speed.”

    ठितोव भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “तिट्ठ, तिट्ठ, समणा”ति।

    Ṭhitova bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “tiṭṭha, tiṭṭha, samaṇā”ti.

    He stood still and said, “Stop, stop, ascetic!”

    “ठितो अहं, अङ्गुलिमाल, त्वञ्च तिट्ठा”ति।

    “Ṭhito ahaṁ, aṅgulimāla, tvañca tiṭṭhā”ti.

    “I’ve stopped, Aṅgulimāla—now you stop.”

    अथ खो चोरस्स अङ्गुलिमालस्स एतदहोसि: “इमे खो समणा सक्यपुत्तिया सच्चवादिनो सच्चपटिञ्ञा। अथ पनायं समणो गच्छं येवाह: ‘ठितो अहं, अङ्गुलिमाल, त्वञ्च तिट्ठाऽति। यन्नूनाहं इमं समणं पुच्छेय्यन्”ति।

    Atha kho corassa aṅgulimālassa etadahosi: “ime kho samaṇā sakyaputtiyā saccavādino saccapaṭiññā. Atha panāyaṁ samaṇo gacchaṁ yevāha: ‘ṭhito ahaṁ, aṅgulimāla, tvañca tiṭṭhā’ti. Yannūnāhaṁ imaṁ samaṇaṁ puccheyyan”ti.

    Then Aṅgulimāla thought, “These Sakyan ascetics speak the truth. Yet while walking the ascetic Gotama says: ‘I’ve stopped, Aṅgulimāla—now you stop.’ Why don’t I ask him about this?”

    अथ खो चोरो अङ्गुलिमालो भगवन्तं गाथाय अज्झभासि:

    Atha kho coro aṅgulimālo bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

    Then he addressed the Buddha in verse:

    “गच्छं वदेसि समण ठितोम्हि, ममञ्च ब्रूसि ठितमट्ठितोति; पुच्छामि तं समण एतमत्थं, कथं ठितो त्वं अहमट्ठितोम्ही”ति।

    “Gacchaṁ vadesi samaṇa ṭhitomhi, Mamañca brūsi ṭhitamaṭṭhitoti; Pucchāmi taṁ samaṇa etamatthaṁ, Kathaṁ ṭhito tvaṁ ahamaṭṭhitomhī”ti.

    “While walking, ascetic, you say ‘I’ve stopped.’ And I have stopped, but you tell me I’ve not. I’m asking you this, ascetic: how is it you’ve stopped and I have not?”

    “ठितो अहं अङ्गुलिमाल सब्बदा, सब्बेसु भूतेसु निधाय दण्डं; तुवञ्च पाणेसु असञ्ञतोसि, तस्मा ठितोहं तुवमट्ठितोसी”ति।

    “Ṭhito ahaṁ aṅgulimāla sabbadā, Sabbesu bhūtesu nidhāya daṇḍaṁ; Tuvañca pāṇesu asaññatosi, Tasmā ṭhitohaṁ tuvamaṭṭhitosī”ti.

    “Aṅgulimāla, I have forever stopped—I’ve laid aside violence towards all creatures. But you can’t stop yourself from harming living creatures; that’s why I’ve stopped, but you have not.”

    “चिरस्सं वत मे महितो महेसी, महावनं पापुणि सच्चवादी; सोहं चरिस्सामि पहाय पापं, सुत्वान गाथं तव धम्मयुत्तं”।

    “Cirassaṁ vata me mahito mahesī, Mahāvanaṁ pāpuṇi saccavādī; Sohaṁ carissāmi pahāya pāpaṁ, Sutvāna gāthaṁ tava dhammayuttaṁ”.

    “Oh, at long last a renowned great seer, an ascetic has followed me into this deep wood. Now that I’ve heard your verse on Dhamma, I shall live without evil.”

    इत्वेव चोरो असिमावुधञ्च, सोब्भे पपाते नरके अकिरि; अवन्दि चोरो सुगतस्स पादे, तत्थेव नं पब्बज्जं अयाचि।

    Itveva coro asimāvudhañca, Sobbhe papāte narake akiri; Avandi coro sugatassa pāde, Tattheva naṁ pabbajjaṁ ayāci.

    With these words, the bandit hurled his sword and weapons down a cliff into an abyss. He venerated the Holy One’s feet, and asked him for the going forth right away.

    बुद्धो च खो कारुणिको महेसि, यो सत्था लोकस्स सदेवकस्स; “तमेहि भिक्खू”ति तदा अवोच, एसेव तस्स अहु भिक्खुभावोति।

    Buddho ca kho kāruṇiko mahesi, Yo satthā lokassa sadevakassa; “Tamehi bhikkhū”ti tadā avoca, Eseva tassa ahu bhikkhubhāvoti.

    Then the Buddha, the compassionate great seer, the teacher of the world with its gods, said to him, “Come, monk!” And with that he became a monk.

    अथ खो भगवा आयस्मता अङ्गुलिमालेन पच्छासमणेन येन सावत्थि तेन चारिकं पक्कामि। अनुपुब्बेन चारिकं चरमानो येन सावत्थि तदवसरि। तत्र सुदं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे।

    Atha kho bhagavā āyasmatā aṅgulimālena pacchāsamaṇena yena sāvatthi tena cārikaṁ pakkāmi. Anupubbena cārikaṁ caramāno yena sāvatthi tadavasari. Tatra sudaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

    Then the Buddha set out for Sāvatthī with Venerable Aṅgulimāla as his second monk. Traveling stage by stage, he arrived at Sāvatthī, where he stayed in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

    तेन खो पन समयेन रञ्ञो पसेनदिस्स कोसलस्स अन्तेपुरद्वारे महाजनकायो सन्निपतित्वा उच्चासद्दो महासद्दो होति: “चोरो ते, देव, विजिते अङ्गुलिमालो नाम लुद्दो लोहितपाणि हतपहते निविट्ठो अदयापन्नो पाणभूतेसु। तेन गामापि अगामा कता, निगमापि अनिगमा कता, जनपदापि अजनपदा कता। सो मनुस्से वधित्वा वधित्वा अङ्गुलीनं मालं धारेति। तं देवो पटिसेधेतू”ति।

    Tena kho pana samayena rañño pasenadissa kosalassa antepuradvāre mahājanakāyo sannipatitvā uccāsaddo mahāsaddo hoti: “coro te, deva, vijite aṅgulimālo nāma luddo lohitapāṇi hatapahate niviṭṭho adayāpanno pāṇabhūtesu. Tena gāmāpi agāmā katā, nigamāpi anigamā katā, janapadāpi ajanapadā katā. So manusse vadhitvā vadhitvā aṅgulīnaṁ mālaṁ dhāreti. Taṁ devo paṭisedhetū”ti.

    Now at that time a crowd had gathered by the gate of King Pasenadi’s royal compound making a dreadful racket, “In your realm, Your Majesty, there is a bandit named Aṅgulimāla. He is violent, bloody-handed, a hardened killer, merciless to living beings. He has laid waste to villages, towns, and countries. He is constantly murdering people, and he wears their fingers as a necklace. Your Majesty must put a stop to him!”

    अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो पञ्चमत्तेहि अस्ससतेहि सावत्थिया निक्खमि दिवा दिवस्स। येन आरामो तेन पाविसि। यावतिका यानस्स भूमि यानेन गन्त्वा याना पच्चोरोहित्वा पत्तिकोव येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो राजानं पसेनदिं कोसलं भगवा एतदवोच:

    Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo pañcamattehi assasatehi sāvatthiyā nikkhami divā divassa. Yena ārāmo tena pāvisi. Yāvatikā yānassa bhūmi yānena gantvā yānā paccorohitvā pattikova yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

    Then King Pasenadi drove out from Sāvatthī in the middle of the day with around five hundred horses, heading for the monastery. He went by carriage as far as the terrain allowed, then descended and approached the Buddha on foot. He bowed and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him,

    “किं नु ते, महाराज, राजा वा मागधो सेनियो बिम्बिसारो कुपितो वेसालिका वा लिच्छवी अञ्ञे वा पटिराजानो”ति?

    “kiṁ nu te, mahārāja, rājā vā māgadho seniyo bimbisāro kupito vesālikā vā licchavī aññe vā paṭirājāno”ti?

    “What is it, great king? Is King Seniya Bimbisāra of Magadha angry with you, or the Licchavis of Vesālī, or some other opposing ruler?”

    “न खो मे, भन्ते, राजा मागधो सेनियो बिम्बिसारो कुपितो, नापि वेसालिका लिच्छवी, नापि अञ्ञे पटिराजानो। चोरो मे, भन्ते, विजिते अङ्गुलिमालो नाम लुद्दो लोहितपाणि हतपहते निविट्ठो अदयापन्नो पाणभूतेसु। तेन गामापि अगामा कता, निगमापि अनिगमा कता, जनपदापि अजनपदा कता। सो मनुस्से वधित्वा वधित्वा अङ्गुलीनं मालं धारेति। ताहं, भन्ते, पटिसेधिस्सामी”ति।

    “Na kho me, bhante, rājā māgadho seniyo bimbisāro kupito, nāpi vesālikā licchavī, nāpi aññe paṭirājāno. Coro me, bhante, vijite aṅgulimālo nāma luddo lohitapāṇi hatapahate niviṭṭho adayāpanno pāṇabhūtesu. Tena gāmāpi agāmā katā, nigamāpi anigamā katā, janapadāpi ajanapadā katā. So manusse vadhitvā vadhitvā aṅgulīnaṁ mālaṁ dhāreti. Tāhaṁ, bhante, paṭisedhissāmī”ti.

    “No, sir. In my realm there is a bandit named Aṅgulimāla. He is violent, bloody-handed, a hardened killer, merciless to living beings. … I shall put a stop to him.”

    “सचे पन त्वं, महाराज, अङ्गुलिमालं पस्सेय्यासि केसमस्सुं ओहारेत्वा कासायानि वत्थानि अच्छादेत्वा अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजितं, विरतं पाणातिपाता, विरतं अदिन्नादाना, विरतं मुसावादा, एकभत्तिकं, ब्रह्मचारिं, सीलवन्तं, कल्याणधम्मं, किन्ति नं करेय्यासी”ति?

    “Sace pana tvaṁ, mahārāja, aṅgulimālaṁ passeyyāsi kesamassuṁ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajitaṁ, virataṁ pāṇātipātā, virataṁ adinnādānā, virataṁ musāvādā, ekabhattikaṁ, brahmacāriṁ, sīlavantaṁ, kalyāṇadhammaṁ, kinti naṁ kareyyāsī”ti?

    “But great king, suppose you were to see that Aṅgulimāla had shaved off his hair and beard, dressed in ocher robes, and gone forth from the lay life to homelessness. And that he was refraining from killing living creatures, stealing, and lying; that he was eating in one part of the day, and was celibate, ethical, and of good character. What would you do to him?”

    “अभिवादेय्याम वा, भन्ते, पच्चुट्ठेय्याम वा आसनेन वा निमन्तेय्याम, अभिनिमन्तेय्याम वा नं चीवरपिण्डपातसेनासनगिलानप्पच्चयभेसज्जपरिक्खारेहि, धम्मिकं वा अस्स रक्खावरणगुत्तिं संविदहेय्याम। कुतो पनस्स, भन्ते, दुस्सीलस्स पापधम्मस्स एवरूपो सीलसंयमो भविस्सती”ति?

    “Abhivādeyyāma vā, bhante, paccuṭṭheyyāma vā āsanena vā nimanteyyāma, abhinimanteyyāma vā naṁ cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārehi, dhammikaṁ vā assa rakkhāvaraṇaguttiṁ saṁvidaheyyāma. Kuto panassa, bhante, dussīlassa pāpadhammassa evarūpo sīlasaṁyamo bhavissatī”ti?

    “I would bow to him, rise in his presence, or offer him a seat. I’d invite him to accept robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. And I’d organize his lawful guarding and protection. But sir, how could such an immoral, evil man ever have such virtue and restraint?”

    तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो भगवतो अविदूरे निसिन्नो होति। अथ खो भगवा दक्खिणं बाहुं पग्गहेत्वा राजानं पसेनदिं कोसलं एतदवोच: “एसो, महाराज, अङ्गुलिमालो”ति।

    Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā aṅgulimālo bhagavato avidūre nisinno hoti. Atha kho bhagavā dakkhiṇaṁ bāhuṁ paggahetvā rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ etadavoca: “eso, mahārāja, aṅgulimālo”ti.

    Now at that time Venerable Aṅgulimāla was sitting not far from the Buddha. Then the Buddha pointed with his right arm and said to the king, “Great king, this is Aṅgulimāla.”

    अथ खो रञ्ञो पसेनदिस्स कोसलस्स अहुदेव भयं, अहु छम्भितत्तं, अहु लोमहंसो। अथ खो भगवा राजानं पसेनदिं कोसलं भीतं संविग्गं लोमहट्ठजातं विदित्वा राजानं पसेनदिं कोसलं एतदवोच: “मा भायि, महाराज, नत्थि ते इतो भयन्”ति। अथ खो रञ्ञो पसेनदिस्स कोसलस्स यं अहोसि भयं वा छम्भितत्तं वा लोमहंसो वा सो पटिप्पस्सम्भि।

    Atha kho rañño pasenadissa kosalassa ahudeva bhayaṁ, ahu chambhitattaṁ, ahu lomahaṁso. Atha kho bhagavā rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ bhītaṁ saṁviggaṁ lomahaṭṭhajātaṁ viditvā rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ etadavoca: “mā bhāyi, mahārāja, natthi te ito bhayan”ti. Atha kho rañño pasenadissa kosalassa yaṁ ahosi bhayaṁ vā chambhitattaṁ vā lomahaṁso vā so paṭippassambhi.

    Then the king became frightened, scared, his hair standing on end. Knowing this, the Buddha said to him, “Do not fear, great king. You have nothing to fear from him.” Then the king’s fear died down.

    अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो येनायस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मन्तं अङ्गुलिमालं एतदवोच: “अय्यो नो, भन्ते, अङ्गुलिमालो”ति?

    Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yenāyasmā aṅgulimālo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ aṅgulimālaṁ etadavoca: “ayyo no, bhante, aṅgulimālo”ti?

    Then the king went over to Aṅgulimāla and said, “Sir, is the venerable really Aṅgulimāla?”

    “एवं, महाराजा”ति।

    “Evaṁ, mahārājā”ti.

    “Yes, great king.”

    “कथङ्गोत्तो अय्यस्स पिता, कथङ्गोत्ता माता”ति?

    “Kathaṅgotto ayyassa pitā, kathaṅgottā mātā”ti?

    “What clans were your father and mother from?”

    “गग्गो खो, महाराज, पिता, मन्ताणी माता”ति।

    “Gaggo kho, mahārāja, pitā, mantāṇī mātā”ti.

    “My father was a Gagga, and my mother a Mantāṇī.”

    “अभिरमतु, भन्ते, अय्यो गग्गो मन्ताणिपुत्तो। अहमय्यस्स गग्गस्स मन्ताणिपुत्तस्स उस्सुक्कं करिस्सामि चीवरपिण्डपातसेनासनगिलानप्पच्चयभेसज्जपरिक्खारानन्”ति।

    “Abhiramatu, bhante, ayyo gaggo mantāṇiputto. Ahamayyassa gaggassa mantāṇiputtassa ussukkaṁ karissāmi cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārānan”ti.

    “May the venerable Gagga son of Mantāṇī be happy. I’ll make sure that you’re provided with robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick.”

    तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो आरञ्ञिको होति पिण्डपातिको पंसुकूलिको तेचीवरिको। अथ खो आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो राजानं पसेनदिं कोसलं एतदवोच: “अलं, महाराज, परिपुण्णं मे चीवरन्”ति।

    Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā aṅgulimālo āraññiko hoti piṇḍapātiko paṁsukūliko tecīvariko. Atha kho āyasmā aṅgulimālo rājānaṁ pasenadiṁ kosalaṁ etadavoca: “alaṁ, mahārāja, paripuṇṇaṁ me cīvaran”ti.

    But at that time Venerable Aṅgulimāla lived in the wilderness, ate only almsfood, and owned just three robes. So he said to the king, “Enough, great king. My robes are complete.”

    अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “अच्छरियं, भन्ते, अब्भुतं, भन्ते। यावञ्चिदं, भन्ते, भगवा अदन्तानं दमेता, असन्तानं समेता, अपरिनिब्बुतानं परिनिब्बापेता। यञ्हि मयं, भन्ते, नासक्खिम्हा दण्डेनपि सत्थेनपि दमेतुं सो भगवता अदण्डेन असत्थेनेव दन्तो। हन्द च दानि मयं, भन्ते, गच्छाम; बहुकिच्चा मयं बहुकरणीया”ति।

    Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “acchariyaṁ, bhante, abbhutaṁ, bhante. Yāvañcidaṁ, bhante, bhagavā adantānaṁ dametā, asantānaṁ sametā, aparinibbutānaṁ parinibbāpetā. Yañhi mayaṁ, bhante, nāsakkhimhā daṇḍenapi satthenapi dametuṁ so bhagavatā adaṇḍena asattheneva3 danto. Handa ca dāni4 mayaṁ, bhante, gacchāma; bahukiccā mayaṁ bahukaraṇīyā”ti.

    Then the king went back to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! How the Buddha tames those who are wild, pacifies those who are violent, and extinguishes those who are unextinguished! For I was not able to tame him with the rod and the sword, but the Buddha tamed him without rod or sword. Well, now, sir, I must go. I have many duties, and much to do.”

    “यस्सदानि, महाराज, कालं मञ्ञसी”ति। अथ खो राजा पसेनदि कोसलो उट्ठायासना भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा पदक्खिणं कत्वा पक्कामि।

    “Yassadāni, mahārāja, kālaṁ maññasī”ti. Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo uṭṭhāyāsanā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.

    “Please, great king, go at your convenience.” Then King Pasenadi got up from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving.

    अथ खो आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय सावत्थियं पिण्डाय पाविसि। अद्दसा खो आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो सावत्थियं सपदानं पिण्डाय चरमानो अञ्ञतरं इत्थिं मूळ्हगब्भं विघातगब्भं। दिस्वानस्स एतदहोसि: “किलिस्सन्ति वत, भो, सत्ता; किलिस्सन्ति वत, भो, सत्ता”ति।

    Atha kho āyasmā aṅgulimālo pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiyaṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi. Addasā kho āyasmā aṅgulimālo sāvatthiyaṁ sapadānaṁ piṇḍāya caramāno aññataraṁ itthiṁ mūḷhagabbhaṁ vighātagabbhaṁ. Disvānassa etadahosi: “kilissanti vata, bho, sattā; kilissanti vata, bho, sattā”ti.

    Then Venerable Aṅgulimāla robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms. Then as he was wandering indiscriminately for almsfood he saw a woman undergoing a painful obstructed labor. Seeing this, it occurred to him, “Oh, beings undergo such travail! Oh, beings undergo such travail!”

    अथ खो आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो सावत्थियं पिण्डाय चरित्वा पच्छाभत्तं पिण्डपातपटिक्कन्तो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “इधाहं, भन्ते, पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय सावत्थिं पिण्डाय पाविसिं। अद्दसं खो अहं, भन्ते, सावत्थियं सपदानं पिण्डाय चरमानो अञ्ञतरं इत्थिं मूळ्हगब्भं विघातगब्भं। दिस्वान मय्हं एतदहोसि: ‘किलिस्सन्ति वत भो सत्ता, किलिस्सन्ति वत भो सत्ताऽ”ति। “तेन हि त्वं, अङ्गुलिमाल, येन सा इत्थी तेनुपसङ्कम; उपसङ्कमित्वा तं इत्थिं एवं वदेहि:

    Atha kho āyasmā aṅgulimālo sāvatthiyaṁ piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā aṅgulimālo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “idhāhaṁ, bhante, pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisiṁ. Addasaṁ kho ahaṁ, bhante, sāvatthiyaṁ sapadānaṁ piṇḍāya caramāno aññataraṁ itthiṁ mūḷhagabbhaṁ vighātagabbhaṁ. Disvāna mayhaṁ etadahosi: ‘kilissanti vata bho sattā, kilissanti vata bho sattā’”ti. “Tena hi tvaṁ, aṅgulimāla, yena sā itthī tenupasaṅkama; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ itthiṁ evaṁ vadehi:

    Then after wandering for alms in Sāvatthī, after the meal, on his return from almsround, he went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. The Buddha said to him, “Well then, Aṅgulimāla, go to that woman and say this:

    ‘यतोहं, भगिनि, जातो नाभिजानामि सञ्चिच्च पाणं जीविता वोरोपेता, तेन सच्चेन सोत्थि ते होतु, सोत्थि गब्भस्साऽ”ति।

    ‘yatohaṁ, bhagini, jāto5 nābhijānāmi sañcicca pāṇaṁ jīvitā voropetā, tena saccena sotthi te hotu, sotthi gabbhassā’”ti.

    ‘Ever since I was born, sister, I don’t recall having intentionally taken the life of a living creature. By this truth, may both you and your baby be safe.’”

    “सो हि नून मे, भन्ते, सम्पजानमुसावादो भविस्सति। मया हि, भन्ते, बहू सञ्चिच्च पाणा जीविता वोरोपिता”ति।

    “So hi nūna me, bhante, sampajānamusāvādo bhavissati. Mayā hi, bhante, bahū sañcicca pāṇā jīvitā voropitā”ti.

    “But sir, wouldn’t that be telling a deliberate lie? For I have intentionally killed many living creatures.”

    “तेन हि त्वं, अङ्गुलिमाल, येन सा इत्थी तेनुपसङ्कम; उपसङ्कमित्वा तं इत्थिं एवं वदेहि:

    “Tena hi tvaṁ, aṅgulimāla, yena sā itthī tenupasaṅkama; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ itthiṁ evaṁ vadehi:

    “In that case, Aṅgulimāla, go to that woman and say this:

    ‘यतोहं, भगिनि, अरियाय जातिया जातो, नाभिजानामि सञ्चिच्च पाणं जीविता वोरोपेता, तेन सच्चेन सोत्थि ते होतु, सोत्थि गब्भस्साऽ”ति।

    ‘yatohaṁ, bhagini, ariyāya jātiyā jāto, nābhijānāmi sañcicca pāṇaṁ jīvitā voropetā, tena saccena sotthi te hotu, sotthi gabbhassā’”ti.

    ‘Ever since I was born in the noble birth, sister, I don’t recall having intentionally taken the life of a living creature. By this truth, may both you and your baby be safe.’”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो भगवतो पटिस्सुत्वा येन सा इत्थी तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा तं इत्थिं एतदवोच:

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho āyasmā aṅgulimālo bhagavato paṭissutvā yena sā itthī tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā taṁ itthiṁ etadavoca:

    “Yes, sir,” replied Aṅgulimāla. He went to that woman and said:

    “यतोहं, भगिनि, अरियाय जातिया जातो, नाभिजानामि सञ्चिच्च पाणं जीविता वोरोपेता, तेन सच्चेन सोत्थि ते होतु, सोत्थि गब्भस्सा”ति।

    “yatohaṁ, bhagini, ariyāya jātiyā jāto, nābhijānāmi sañcicca pāṇaṁ jīvitā voropetā, tena saccena sotthi te hotu, sotthi gabbhassā”ti.

    “Ever since I was born in the noble birth, sister, I don’t recall having intentionally taken the life of a living creature. By this truth, may both you and your baby be safe.”

    अथ ख्वास्सा इत्थिया सोत्थि अहोसि, सोत्थि गब्भस्स।

    Atha khvāssā itthiyā sotthi ahosi, sotthi gabbhassa.

    Then that woman was safe, and so was her baby.

    अथ खो आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो एको वूपकट्ठो अप्पमत्तो आतापी पहितत्तो विहरन्तो नचिरस्सेव—यस्सत्थाय कुलपुत्ता सम्मदेव अगारस्मा अनगारियं पब्बजन्ति, तदनुत्तरं—ब्रह्मचरियपरियोसानं दिट्ठेव धम्मे सयं अभिञ्ञा सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहासि।

    Atha kho āyasmā aṅgulimālo eko vūpakaṭṭho appamatto ātāpī pahitatto viharanto nacirasseva—yassatthāya kulaputtā sammadeva agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajanti, tadanuttaraṁ—brahmacariyapariyosānaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme sayaṁ abhiññā sacchikatvā upasampajja vihāsi.

    Then Aṅgulimāla, living alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute, soon realized the supreme end of the spiritual path in this very life. He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

    “खीणा जाति, वुसितं ब्रह्मचरियं, कतं करणीयं, नापरं इत्थत्ताया”ति अब्भञ्ञासि। अञ्ञतरो खो पनायस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो अरहतं अहोसि।

    “Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā”ti abbhaññāsi. Aññataro kho panāyasmā aṅgulimālo arahataṁ ahosi.

    He understood: “Rebirth is ended; the spiritual journey has been completed; what had to be done has been done; there is no return to any state of existence.” And Venerable Aṅgulimāla became one of the perfected.

    अथ खो आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो पुब्बण्हसमयं निवासेत्वा पत्तचीवरमादाय सावत्थिं पिण्डाय पाविसि। तेन खो पन समयेन अञ्ञेनपि लेड्डु खित्तो आयस्मतो अङ्गुलिमालस्स काये निपतति, अञ्ञेनपि दण्डो खित्तो आयस्मतो अङ्गुलिमालस्स काये निपतति, अञ्ञेनपि सक्खरा खित्ता आयस्मतो अङ्गुलिमालस्स काये निपतति। अथ खो आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो भिन्नेन सीसेन, लोहितेन गळन्तेन, भिन्नेन पत्तेन, विप्फालिताय सङ्घाटिया येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि।

    Atha kho āyasmā aṅgulimālo pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya sāvatthiṁ piṇḍāya pāvisi. Tena kho pana samayena aññenapi leḍḍu khitto āyasmato aṅgulimālassa kāye nipatati, aññenapi daṇḍo khitto āyasmato aṅgulimālassa kāye nipatati, aññenapi sakkharā khittā āyasmato aṅgulimālassa kāye nipatati. Atha kho āyasmā aṅgulimālo bhinnena sīsena, lohitena gaḷantena, bhinnena pattena, vipphālitāya saṅghāṭiyā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami.

    Then Venerable Aṅgulimāla robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms. Now at that time someone threw a stone that hit Aṅgulimāla, someone else threw a stick, and someone else threw gravel. Then Aṅgulimāla—with cracked head, bleeding, his bowl broken, and his outer robe torn—went to the Buddha.

    अद्दसा खो भगवा आयस्मन्तं अङ्गुलिमालं दूरतोव आगच्छन्तं। दिस्वान आयस्मन्तं अङ्गुलिमालं एतदवोच: “अधिवासेहि त्वं, ब्राह्मण, अधिवासेहि त्वं, ब्राह्मण। यस्स खो त्वं, ब्राह्मण, कम्मस्स विपाकेन बहूनि वस्सानि बहूनि वस्ससतानि बहूनि वस्ससहस्सानि निरये पच्चेय्यासि तस्स त्वं, ब्राह्मण, कम्मस्स विपाकं दिट्ठेव धम्मे पटिसंवेदेसी”ति।

    Addasā kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ aṅgulimālaṁ dūratova āgacchantaṁ. Disvāna āyasmantaṁ aṅgulimālaṁ etadavoca: “adhivāsehi tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, adhivāsehi tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa. Yassa kho tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, kammassa vipākena bahūni vassāni bahūni vassasatāni bahūni vassasahassāni niraye pacceyyāsi tassa tvaṁ, brāhmaṇa, kammassa vipākaṁ diṭṭheva dhamme paṭisaṁvedesī”ti.

    The Buddha saw him coming off in the distance, and said to him, “Endure it, brahmin! Endure it, brahmin! You’re experiencing in this life the result of deeds that might have caused you to be tormented in hell for many years, many hundreds or thousands of years.”

    अथ खो आयस्मा अङ्गुलिमालो रहोगतो पटिसल्लीनो विमुत्तिसुखं पटिसंवेदि; तायं वेलायं इमं उदानं उदानेसि:

    Atha kho āyasmā aṅgulimālo rahogato paṭisallīno vimuttisukhaṁ paṭisaṁvedi; tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imaṁ udānaṁ udānesi:

    Later, Venerable Aṅgulimāla was experiencing the bliss of release while in private retreat. On that occasion he expressed this heartfelt sentiment:

    “यो पुब्बेव पमज्जित्वा, पच्छा सो नप्पमज्जति; सोमं लोकं पभासेति, अब्भा मुत्तोव चन्दिमा।

    “Yo pubbeva6 pamajjitvā, pacchā so nappamajjati; Somaṁ7 lokaṁ pabhāseti, abbhā muttova candimā.

    “He who once was heedless, but turned to heedfulness, lights up the world, like the moon freed from a cloud.

    यस्स पापं कतं कम्मं, कुसलेन पिधीयति; सोमं लोकं पभासेति, अब्भा मुत्तोव चन्दिमा।

    Yassa pāpaṁ kataṁ kammaṁ, kusalena pidhīyati; Somaṁ lokaṁ pabhāseti, abbhā muttova candimā.

    Someone whose bad deed is supplanted by the good, lights up the world, like the moon freed from a cloud.

    यो हवे दहरो भिक्खु, युञ्जति बुद्धसासने; सोमं लोकं पभासेति, अब्भा मुत्तोव चन्दिमा।

    Yo have daharo bhikkhu, yuñjati buddhasāsane; Somaṁ lokaṁ pabhāseti, abbhā muttova candimā.

    A young bhikkhu devoted to the Buddha’s teaching, lights up the world, like the moon freed from a cloud.

    दिसा हि मे धम्मकथं सुणन्तु, दिसा हि मे युञ्जन्तु बुद्धसासने; दिसा हि मे ते मनुजा भजन्तु, ये धम्ममेवादपयन्ति सन्तो।

    Disā hi me dhammakathaṁ suṇantu, Disā hi me yuñjantu buddhasāsane; Disā hi me te manujā bhajantu, Ye dhammamevādapayanti santo.

    May even my enemies hear a Dhamma talk! May even my enemies devote themselves to the Buddha’s teaching! May even my enemies associate with those good people who establish others in the Dhamma!

    दिसा हि मे खन्तिवादानं, अविरोधप्पसंसीनं; सुणन्तु धम्मं कालेन, तञ्च अनुविधीयन्तु।

    Disā hi me khantivādānaṁ, avirodhappasaṁsīnaṁ; Suṇantu dhammaṁ kālena, tañca anuvidhīyantu.

    May even my enemies hear Dhamma at the right time, from those who teach acceptance, praising acquiescence; and may they follow that path!

    न हि जातु सो ममं हिंसे, अञ्ञं वा पन किञ्चि नं; पप्पुय्य परमं सन्तिं, रक्खेय्य तसथावरे।

    Na hi jātu so mamaṁ hiṁse, aññaṁ vā pana kiñci naṁ; Pappuyya paramaṁ santiṁ, rakkheyya tasathāvare.

    For then they’d surely wish no harm upon myself or others. Having arrived at ultimate peace, they’d look after creatures firm and frail.

    उदकञ्हि नयन्ति नेत्तिका, उसुकारा नमयन्ति तेजनं; दारुं नमयन्ति तच्छका, अत्तानं दमयन्ति पण्डिता।

    Udakañhi nayanti nettikā, Usukārā namayanti8 tejanaṁ; Dāruṁ namayanti tacchakā, Attānaṁ damayanti paṇḍitā.

    For irrigators guide the water, and fletchers straighten arrows; carpenters carve timber—but the astute tame themselves.

    दण्डेनेके दमयन्ति, अङ्कुसेहि कसाहि च; अदण्डेन असत्थेन, अहं दन्तोम्हि तादिना।

    Daṇḍeneke damayanti, aṅkusehi kasāhi ca; Adaṇḍena asatthena, ahaṁ dantomhi tādinā.

    Some tame by using the rod, some with goads, and some with whips. But the poised one tamed me without rod or sword.

    अहिंसकोति मे नामं, हिंसकस्स पुरे सतो; अज्जाहं सच्चनामोम्हि, न नं हिंसामि किञ्चि नं।

    Ahiṁsakoti me nāmaṁ, hiṁsakassa pure sato; Ajjāhaṁ saccanāmomhi, na naṁ hiṁsāmi kiñci naṁ.

    My name is ‘Harmless’, though I used to be harmful. The name I bear today is true, for I do no harm to anyone.

    चोरो अहं पुरे आसिं, अङ्गुलिमालोति विस्सुतो; वुय्हमानो महोघेन, बुद्धं सरणमागमं।

    Coro ahaṁ pure āsiṁ, aṅgulimāloti vissuto; Vuyhamāno mahoghena, buddhaṁ saraṇamāgamaṁ.

    I used to be a bandit, the notorious Aṅgulimāla. Swept away in a great flood, I went to the Buddha as a refuge.

    लोहितपाणि पुरे आसिं, अङ्गुलिमालोति विस्सुतो; सरणगमनं पस्स, भवनेत्ति समूहता।

    Lohitapāṇi pure āsiṁ, aṅgulimāloti vissuto; Saraṇagamanaṁ passa, bhavanetti samūhatā.

    I used to have blood on my hands, the notorious Aṅgulimāla. See the refuge I’ve found—the conduit to rebirth is eradicated.

    तादिसं कम्मं कत्वान, बहुं दुग्गतिगामिनं; फुट्ठो कम्मविपाकेन, अणणो भुञ्जामि भोजनं।

    Tādisaṁ kammaṁ katvāna, bahuṁ duggatigāminaṁ; Phuṭṭho kammavipākena, aṇaṇo bhuñjāmi bhojanaṁ.

    I’ve done many of the sort of deeds that lead to a bad destination. The result of my deeds has already struck me, so I enjoy my food free of debt.

    पमादमनुयुञ्जन्ति, बाला दुम्मेधिनो जना; अप्पमादञ्च मेधावी, धनं सेट्ठंव रक्खति।

    Pamādamanuyuñjanti, bālā dummedhino janā; Appamādañca medhāvī, dhanaṁ seṭṭhaṁva rakkhati.

    Fools and half-wits devote themselves to negligence. But the wise protect diligence as their best treasure.

    मा पमादमनुयुञ्जेथ, मा कामरति सन्थवं; अप्पमत्तो हि झायन्तो, पप्पोति विपुलं सुखं।

    Mā pamādamanuyuñjetha, mā kāmarati santhavaṁ; Appamatto hi jhāyanto, pappoti vipulaṁ9 sukhaṁ.

    Don’t devote yourself to negligence, or delight in sexual intimacy. For if you’re diligent and practice jhāna, you’ll attain abundant happiness.

    स्वागतं नापगतं, नयिदं दुम्मन्तितं मम; संविभत्तेसु धम्मेसु, यं सेट्ठं तदुपागमं।

    Svāgataṁ10 nāpagataṁ, nayidaṁ dummantitaṁ mama; Saṁvibhattesu11 dhammesu, yaṁ seṭṭhaṁ tadupāgamaṁ.

    It was welcome, not unwelcome, the advice I got was good. Of the well-explained teachings, I arrived at the best.

    स्वागतं नापगतं, नयिदं दुम्मन्तितं मम; तिस्सो विज्जा अनुप्पत्ता, कतं बुद्धस्स सासनन्”ति।

    Svāgataṁ nāpagataṁ, nayidaṁ dummantitaṁ mama; Tisso vijjā anuppattā, kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.

    It was welcome, not unwelcome, the advice I got was good. I’ve attained the three knowledges and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions.”

    अङ्गुलिमालसुत्तं निट्ठितं छट्ठं।

    Aṅgulimālasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ chaṭṭhaṁ.
