anti-VEGFR monoclonal antibody
Pronunciation
Definition 1
A monoclonal antibody being studied in the treatment of some types of cancer. Monoclonal antibodies are made in the laboratory and can locate and bind to substances in the body, including cancer cells. Anti-VEGFR monoclonal antibodies bind to receptors for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and keeps VEGF from binding to them. This may stop the growth of new blood vessels that tumors need to grow. It is a type of antiangiogenesis agent. (NCI Dictionary)
Definition 2
Any monoclonal antibody directed against the human tyrosine kinase vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR), with potential anti-angiogenic and antineoplastic activities. An anti-VEGFR monoclonal antibody binds to and inhibits the activity of VEGFR, which may prevent the activation of downstream signaling pathways and tumor angiogenesis; the subsequent reduction in tumor nutrient supply may inhibit tumor cell proliferation. The expression of the pro-angiogenic growth factor VEGF is associated with tumor angiogenesis and tumor cell proliferation and invasion. (NCI Thesaurus)
