    Antimicrobial Intermediate Susceptibility Result

    Definition 1

A microbial susceptibility test result in which the growth of microorganisms may be inhibited by the usually achievable concentrations of antimicrobial agent when the recommended dosage is used for the site of infection. The response rates may be lower than for susceptible isolates. (NCI Thesaurus)

    Definition 2

The growth of microorganisms may be inhibited by antimicrobials that approach usually attainable blood and tissue concentrations. The response rates may be lower than for susceptible isolates. This category also includes a buffer zone, which should prevent small, uncontrolled, technical factors from causing major discrepancies in interpretations, especially for drugs with narrow pharmacotoxicity margins. (NCI Thesaurus/CDISC)
