    Anupubbanirodhasutta

    Progressive Cessations

    “नवयिमे, भिक्खवे, अनुपुब्बनिरोधा। कतमे नव?

    “Navayime, bhikkhave, anupubbanirodhā. Katame nava?

    “Bhikkhus, there are these nine progressive cessations. What nine?

    पठमं झानं समापन्नस्स कामसञ्ञा निरुद्धा होति;

    Paṭhamaṁ jhānaṁ samāpannassa kāmasaññā1 niruddhā hoti;

    For someone who has attained the first jhāna, sensual perceptions have ceased.

    दुतियं झानं समापन्नस्स वितक्कविचारा निरुद्धा होन्ति;

    dutiyaṁ jhānaṁ samāpannassa vitakkavicārā niruddhā honti;

    For someone who has attained the second jhāna, the placing of the mind and keeping it connected have ceased.

    ततियं झानं समापन्नस्स पीति निरुद्धा होति;

    tatiyaṁ jhānaṁ samāpannassa pīti niruddhā hoti;

    For someone who has attained the third jhāna, rapture has ceased.

    चतुत्थं झानं समापन्नस्स अस्सासपस्सासा निरुद्धा होन्ति;

    catutthaṁ jhānaṁ samāpannassa assāsapassāsā niruddhā honti;

    For someone who has attained the fourth jhāna, breathing has ceased.

    आकासानञ्चायतनं समापन्नस्स रूपसञ्ञा निरुद्धा होति;

    ākāsānañcāyatanaṁ samāpannassa rūpasaññā niruddhā hoti;

    For someone who has attained the dimension of infinite space, the perception of form has ceased.

    विञ्ञाणञ्चायतनं समापन्नस्स आकासानञ्चायतनसञ्ञा निरुद्धा होति;

    viññāṇañcāyatanaṁ samāpannassa ākāsānañcāyatanasaññā niruddhā hoti;

    For someone who has attained the dimension of infinite consciousness, the perception of the dimension of infinite space has ceased.

    आकिञ्चञ्ञायतनं समापन्नस्स विञ्ञाणञ्चायतनसञ्ञा निरुद्धा होति;

    ākiñcaññāyatanaṁ samāpannassa viññāṇañcāyatanasaññā niruddhā hoti;

    For someone who has attained the dimension of nothingness, the perception of the dimension of infinite consciousness has ceased.

    नेवसञ्ञानासञ्ञायतनं समापन्नस्स आकिञ्चञ्ञायतनसञ्ञा निरुद्धा होति;

    nevasaññānāsaññāyatanaṁ samāpannassa ākiñcaññāyatanasaññā niruddhā hoti;

    For someone who has attained the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, the perception of the dimension of nothingness has ceased.

    सञ्ञावेदयितनिरोधं समापन्नस्स सञ्ञा च वेदना च निरुद्धा होन्ति।

    saññāvedayitanirodhaṁ samāpannassa saññā ca vedanā ca niruddhā honti.

    For someone who has attained the cessation of perception and feeling, perception and feeling have ceased.

    इमे खो, भिक्खवे, नव अनुपुब्बनिरोधा”ति।

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, nava anupubbanirodhā”ti.

    These are the nine progressive cessations.”

    एकादसमं।

    Ekādasamaṁ.

    सत्तावासवग्गो ततियो।

    Sattāvāsavaggo tatiyo.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    तिठानं खळुङ्को तण्हा, सत्तपञ्ञा सिलायुपो; द्वे वेरा द्वे आघातानि, अनुपुब्बनिरोधेन चाति।

    Tiṭhānaṁ khaḷuṅko taṇhā, Sattapaññā silāyupo; Dve verā dve āghātāni, Anupubbanirodhena cāti.
