Anuruddha and the Agreeable Deities
एकं समयं भगवा कोसम्बियं विहरति घोसितारामे।
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery.
तेन खो पन समयेन आयस्मा अनुरुद्धो दिवाविहारं गतो होति पटिसल्लीनो। अथ खो सम्बहुला मनापकायिका देवता येनायस्मा अनुरुद्धो तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मन्तं अनुरुद्धं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु। एकमन्तं ठिता खो ता देवता आयस्मन्तं अनुरुद्धं एतदवोचुं:
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā anuruddho divāvihāraṁ gato hoti paṭisallīno. Atha kho sambahulā manāpakāyikā devatā yenāyasmā anuruddho tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ anuruddhaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho tā devatā āyasmantaṁ anuruddhaṁ etadavocuṁ:
Now at that time Venerable Anuruddha had gone into retreat for the day’s meditation. Then several deities of the Lovable Host went up to Venerable Anuruddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him:
“मयं, भन्ते अनुरुद्ध, मनापकायिका नाम देवता तीसु ठानेसु इस्सरियं कारेम वसं वत्तेम। मयं, भन्ते अनुरुद्ध, यादिसकं वण्णं आकङ्खाम तादिसकं वण्णं ठानसो पटिलभाम; यादिसकं सरं आकङ्खाम तादिसकं सरं ठानसो पटिलभाम; यादिसकं सुखं आकङ्खाम तादिसकं सुखं ठानसो पटिलभाम। मयं, भन्ते अनुरुद्ध, मनापकायिका नाम देवता इमेसु तीसु ठानेसु इस्सरियं कारेम वसं वत्तेमा”ति।
“mayaṁ, bhante anuruddha, manāpakāyikā nāma devatā tīsu ṭhānesu issariyaṁ kārema vasaṁ vattema. Mayaṁ, bhante anuruddha, yādisakaṁ vaṇṇaṁ ākaṅkhāma tādisakaṁ vaṇṇaṁ ṭhānaso paṭilabhāma; yādisakaṁ saraṁ ākaṅkhāma tādisakaṁ saraṁ ṭhānaso paṭilabhāma; yādisakaṁ sukhaṁ ākaṅkhāma tādisakaṁ sukhaṁ ṭhānaso paṭilabhāma. Mayaṁ, bhante anuruddha, manāpakāyikā nāma devatā imesu tīsu ṭhānesu issariyaṁ kārema vasaṁ vattemā”ti.
“Honorable Anuruddha, we are the deities called ‘Lovable’. We wield authority and control over three things. We can turn any color we want on the spot. We can get any voice that we want on the spot. We can get any pleasure that we want on the spot. We are the deities called ‘Lovable’. We wield authority and control over these three things.”
अथ खो आयस्मतो अनुरुद्धस्स एतदहोसि: “अहो वतिमा देवता सब्बाव नीला अस्सु नीलवण्णा नीलवत्था नीलालङ्कारा”ति। अथ खो ता देवता आयस्मतो अनुरुद्धस्स चित्तमञ्ञाय सब्बाव नीला अहेसुं नीलवण्णा नीलवत्था नीलालङ्कारा।
Atha kho āyasmato anuruddhassa etadahosi: “aho vatimā devatā sabbāva nīlā assu nīlavaṇṇā nīlavatthā nīlālaṅkārā”ti. Atha kho tā devatā āyasmato anuruddhassa cittamaññāya sabbāva nīlā ahesuṁ nīlavaṇṇā nīlavatthā nīlālaṅkārā.
Then Venerable Anuruddha thought, “If only these deities would all turn blue, of blue color, clad in blue, adorned with blue!” Then those deities, knowing Anuruddha’s thought, all turned blue.
अथ खो आयस्मतो अनुरुद्धस्स एतदहोसि: “अहो वतिमा देवता सब्बाव पीता अस्सु …पे…
Atha kho āyasmato anuruddhassa etadahosi: “aho vatimā devatā sabbāva pītā assu …pe…
Then Venerable Anuruddha thought, “If only these deities would all turn yellow …”
सब्बाव लोहितका अस्सु …

“If only these gods would all turn red …”
सब्बाव ओदाता अस्सु ओदातवण्णा ओदातवत्था ओदातालङ्कारा”ति। अथ खो ता देवता आयस्मतो अनुरुद्धस्स चित्तमञ्ञाय सब्बाव ओदाता अहेसुं ओदातवण्णा ओदातवत्था ओदातालङ्कारा।
sabbāva odātā assu odātavaṇṇā odātavatthā odātālaṅkārā”ti. Atha kho tā devatā āyasmato anuruddhassa cittamaññāya sabbāva odātā ahesuṁ odātavaṇṇā odātavatthā odātālaṅkārā.
“If only these gods would all turn white …” Then those deities, knowing Anuruddha’s thought, all turned white.
अथ खो ता देवता एका च गायि एका च नच्चि एका च अच्छरं वादेसि। सेय्यथापि नाम पञ्चङ्गिकस्स तूरियस्स सुविनीतस्स सुप्पटिपताळितस्स कुसलेहि सुसमन्नाहतस्स सद्दो होति वग्गु च रजनीयो च कमनीयो च पेमनीयो च मदनीयो च; एवमेवं तासं देवतानं अलङ्कारानं सद्दो होति वग्गु च रजनीयो च कमनीयो च पेमनीयो च मदनीयो च। अथ खो आयस्मा अनुरुद्धो इन्द्रियानि ओक्खिपि।
Atha kho tā devatā ekā ca1 gāyi ekā ca nacci ekā ca2 accharaṁ vādesi. Seyyathāpi nāma pañcaṅgikassa tūriyassa3 suvinītassa suppaṭipatāḷitassa kusalehi susamannāhatassa saddo hoti vaggu ca rajanīyo ca kamanīyo ca pemanīyo ca madanīyo ca; evamevaṁ tāsaṁ devatānaṁ alaṅkārānaṁ saddo hoti vaggu ca rajanīyo ca kamanīyo ca pemanīyo ca madanīyo ca. Atha kho āyasmā anuruddho indriyāni okkhipi.
Then one of those deities sang, one danced, and one snapped her fingers. Suppose there was a quintet made up of skilled musicians who had practiced well and kept excellent rhythm. They’d sound graceful, tantalizing, sensuous, lovely, and intoxicating. In the same way the performance by those deities sounded graceful, tantalizing, sensuous, lovely, and intoxicating. But Venerable Anuruddha averted his senses.
अथ खो ता देवता “न ख्वय्यो अनुरुद्धो सादियती”ति तत्थेवन्तरधायिंसु। अथ खो आयस्मा अनुरुद्धो सायन्हसमयं पटिसल्लाना वुट्ठितो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवन्तं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो आयस्मा अनुरुद्धो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
Atha kho tā devatā “na khvayyo4 anuruddho sādiyatī”ti5 tatthevantaradhāyiṁsu. Atha kho āyasmā anuruddho sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā anuruddho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then those deities, thinking “Master Anuruddha isn’t enjoying this,” vanished right there. Then in the late afternoon, Anuruddha came out of retreat and went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened, adding:
“इधाहं, भन्ते, दिवाविहारं गतो होमि पटिसल्लीनो। अथ खो, भन्ते, सम्बहुला मनापकायिका देवता येनाहं तेनुपसङ्कमिंसु; उपसङ्कमित्वा मं अभिवादेत्वा एकमन्तं अट्ठंसु। एकमन्तं ठिता खो, भन्ते, ता देवता मं एतदवोचुं: ‘मयं, भन्ते अनुरुद्ध, मनापकायिका नाम देवता तीसु ठानेसु इस्सरियं कारेम वसं वत्तेम। मयं, भन्ते अनुरुद्ध, यादिसकं वण्णं आकङ्खाम तादिसकं वण्णं ठानसो पटिलभाम; यादिसकं सरं आकङ्खाम तादिसकं सरं ठानसो पटिलभाम; यादिसकं सुखं आकङ्खाम तादिसकं सुखं ठानसो पटिलभाम। मयं, भन्ते अनुरुद्ध, मनापकायिका नाम देवता इमेसु तीसु ठानेसु इस्सरियं कारेम वसं वत्तेमाऽति। तस्स मय्हं, भन्ते, एतदहोसि: ‘अहो वतिमा देवता सब्बाव नीला अस्सु नीलवण्णा नीलवत्था नीलालङ्काराऽति। अथ खो, भन्ते, ता देवता मम चित्तमञ्ञाय सब्बाव नीला अहेसुं नीलवण्णा नीलवत्था नीलालङ्कारा।
“Idhāhaṁ, bhante, divāvihāraṁ gato homi paṭisallīno. Atha kho, bhante, sambahulā manāpakāyikā devatā yenāhaṁ tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā maṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhaṁsu. Atha kho, bhante, tā devatā mama cittamaññāya sabbāva nīlā ahesuṁ nīlavaṇṇā nīlavatthā nīlālaṅkārā.
तस्स मय्हं, भन्ते, एतदहोसि: ‘अहो वतिमा देवता सब्बाव पीता अस्सु …पे… सब्बाव लोहितका अस्सु …पे… सब्बाव ओदाता अस्सु ओदातवण्णा ओदातवत्था ओदातालङ्काराऽति। अथ खो, भन्ते, ता देवता मम चित्तमञ्ञाय सब्बाव ओदाता अहेसुं ओदातवण्णा ओदातवत्था ओदातालङ्कारा।
Tassa mayhaṁ, bhante, etadahosi: ‘aho vatimā devatā sabbāva pītā assu …pe… sabbāva lohitakā assu …pe… sabbāva odātā assu odātavaṇṇā odātavatthā odātālaṅkārā’ti. Atha kho, bhante, tā devatā mama cittamaññāya sabbāva odātā ahesuṁ odātavaṇṇā odātavatthā odātālaṅkārā.
अथ खो, भन्ते, ता देवता एका च गायि एका च नच्चि एका च अच्छरं वादेसि। सेय्यथापि नाम पञ्चङ्गिकस्स तूरियस्स सुविनीतस्स सुप्पटिपताळितस्स कुसलेहि सुसमन्नाहतस्स सद्दो होति वग्गु च रजनीयो च कमनीयो च पेमनीयो च मदनीयो च; एवमेवं तासं देवतानं अलङ्कारानं सद्दो होति वग्गु च रजनीयो च कमनीयो च पेमनीयो च मदनीयो च। अथ ख्वाहं, भन्ते, इन्द्रियानि ओक्खिपि।
Atha kho, bhante, tā devatā ekā ca gāyi ekā ca nacci ekā ca accharaṁ vādesi. Seyyathāpi nāma pañcaṅgikassa tūriyassa suvinītassa suppaṭipatāḷitassa kusalehi susamannāhatassa saddo hoti vaggu ca rajanīyo ca kamanīyo ca pemanīyo ca madanīyo ca; evamevaṁ tāsaṁ devatānaṁ alaṅkārānaṁ saddo hoti vaggu ca rajanīyo ca kamanīyo ca pemanīyo ca madanīyo ca. Atha khvāhaṁ, bhante, indriyāni okkhipi.
अथ खो, भन्ते, ता देवता ‘न ख्वय्यो अनुरुद्धो सादियतीऽति तत्थेवन्तरधायिंसु। कतिहि नु खो, भन्ते, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो मातुगामो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा मनापकायिकानं देवानं सहब्यतं उपपज्जती”ति?
Atha kho, bhante, tā devatā ‘na khvayyo anuruddho sādiyatī’ti tatthevantaradhāyiṁsu. Katihi nu kho, bhante, dhammehi samannāgato mātugāmo kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā manāpakāyikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatī”ti?
“How many qualities do females have so that—when their body breaks up, after death—they are reborn in company with the Gods of the Lovable Host?”
“अट्ठहि खो, अनुरुद्ध, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो मातुगामो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा मनापकायिकानं देवानं सहब्यतं उपपज्जति। कतमेहि अट्ठहि?
“Aṭṭhahi kho, anuruddha, dhammehi samannāgato mātugāmo kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā manāpakāyikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati. Katamehi aṭṭhahi?
“Anuruddha, when they have eight qualities females—when their body breaks up, after death—are reborn in company with the Gods of the Lovable Host. What eight?
इध, अनुरुद्ध, मातुगामो यस्स मातापितरो भत्तुनो देन्ति अत्थकामा हितेसिनो अनुकम्पका अनुकम्पं उपादाय तस्स होति पुब्बुट्ठायिनी पच्छानिपातिनी किङ्कारपटिस्साविनी मनापचारिनी पियवादिनी।
Idha, anuruddha, mātugāmo yassa mātāpitaro bhattuno denti atthakāmā hitesino anukampakā anukampaṁ upādāya tassa hoti pubbuṭṭhāyinī pacchānipātinī kiṅkārapaṭissāvinī manāpacārinī piyavādinī.
Take the case of a female whose mother and father give her to a husband wanting what’s best for her, out of kindness and compassion. She would get up before him and go to bed after him, and be obliging, behaving nicely and speaking politely.
ये ते भत्तु गरुनो होन्ति—माताति वा पिताति वा समणब्राह्मणाति वा—ते सक्करोति, गरुं करोति, मानेति, पूजेति, अब्भागते च आसनोदकेन पटिपूजेति।
Ye te bhattu garuno6 honti—mātāti vā pitāti vā samaṇabrāhmaṇāti vā—te sakkaroti, garuṁ karoti, māneti, pūjeti, abbhāgate ca āsanodakena paṭipūjeti.
She honors, respects, esteems, and venerates those her husband respects, such as mother and father, and ascetics and brahmins. And when they arrive she serves them with a seat and water.
ये ते भत्तु अब्भन्तरा कम्मन्ता—उण्णाति वा कप्पासाति वा—तत्थ दक्खा होति अनलसा तत्रुपायाय वीमंसाय समन्नागता अलं कातुं अलं संविधातुं।
Ye te bhattu abbhantarā kammantā—uṇṇāti vā kappāsāti vā—tattha dakkhā hoti analasā tatrupāyāya7 vīmaṁsāya samannāgatā alaṁ kātuṁ alaṁ saṁvidhātuṁ.
She’s deft and tireless in her husband’s household duties, such as knitting and sewing. She understands how to go about things in order to complete and organize the work.
यो सो भत्तु अब्भन्तरो अन्तोजनो—दासाति वा पेस्साति वा कम्मकराति वा—तेसं कतञ्च कततो जानाति अकतञ्च अकततो जानाति, गिलानकानञ्च बलाबलं जानाति खादनीयं भोजनीयञ्चस्स पच्चंसेन संविभजति।
Yo so bhattu abbhantaro antojano—dāsāti vā pessāti vā kammakarāti vā—tesaṁ katañca katato jānāti akatañca akatato jānāti, gilānakānañca balābalaṁ jānāti khādanīyaṁ bhojanīyañcassa paccaṁsena8 saṁvibhajati.
She knows what work her husband’s domestic bondservants, employees, and workers have completed, and what they’ve left incomplete. She knows who is sick, and who is fit or unwell. She distributes to each a fair portion of fresh and cooked foods.
यं भत्तु आहरति धनं वा धञ्ञं वा जातरूपं वा तं आरक्खेन गुत्तिया सम्पादेति, तत्थ च होति अधुत्ती अथेनी असोण्डी अविनासिका।
Yaṁ bhattu āharati dhanaṁ vā dhaññaṁ vā jātarūpaṁ vā taṁ ārakkhena guttiyā sampādeti, tattha ca hoti adhuttī athenī asoṇḍī avināsikā.
She ensures that any income her husband earns is guarded and protected, whether money, grain, silver, or gold. She doesn’t overspend, steal, waste, or lose it.
उपासिका खो पन होति बुद्धं सरणं गता धम्मं सरणं गता सङ्घं सरणं गता।
Upāsikā kho pana hoti buddhaṁ saraṇaṁ gatā dhammaṁ saraṇaṁ gatā saṅghaṁ saraṇaṁ gatā.
She’s a lay follower who has gone for refuge to the Buddha, his teaching, and the Saṅgha.
सीलवती खो पन होति—पाणातिपाता पटिविरता, अदिन्नादाना पटिविरता, कामेसुमिच्छाचारा पटिविरता, मुसावादा पटिविरता, सुरामेरयमज्जपमादट्ठाना पटिविरता।
Sīlavatī kho pana hoti—pāṇātipātā paṭiviratā, adinnādānā paṭiviratā, kāmesumicchācārā paṭiviratā, musāvādā paṭiviratā, surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhānā paṭiviratā.
She’s ethical. She doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or use alcoholic drinks that cause negligence.
चागवती खो पन होति। विगतमलमच्छेरेन चेतसा अगारं अज्झावसति मुत्तचागा पयतपाणिनी वोस्सग्गरता याचयोगा दानसंविभागरता।
Cāgavatī kho pana hoti. Vigatamalamaccherena cetasā agāraṁ ajjhāvasati muttacāgā9 payatapāṇinī vossaggaratā yācayogā dānasaṁvibhāgaratā.
She’s generous. She lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.
इमेहि खो, अनुरुद्ध, अट्ठहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो मातुगामो कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा मनापकायिकानं देवानं सहब्यतं उपपज्जतीति।
Imehi kho, anuruddha, aṭṭhahi dhammehi samannāgato mātugāmo kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā manāpakāyikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjatīti.
When they have these eight qualities females—when their body breaks up, after death—are reborn in company with the Gods of the Lovable Host.
यो नं भरति सब्बदा, निच्चं आतापि उस्सुको; तं सब्बकामदं पोसं, भत्तारं नातिमञ्ञति।
Yo naṁ bharati sabbadā, niccaṁ ātāpi ussuko; Taṁ sabbakāmadaṁ posaṁ, bhattāraṁ nātimaññati.
She’d never look down on her husband, who’s always eager to work hard, always looking after her, and bringing whatever she wants.
न चापि सोत्थि भत्तारं, इस्सावादेन रोसये; भत्तु च गरुनो सब्बे, पटिपूजेति पण्डिता।
Na cāpi sotthi bhattāraṁ, issāvādena rosaye; Bhattu ca garuno sabbe, paṭipūjeti paṇḍitā.
And a good woman never scolds her husband with jealous words. Being astute, she reveres those respected by her husband.
उट्ठाहिका अनलसा, सङ्गहितपरिज्जना; भत्तु मनापं चरति, सम्भतं अनुरक्खति।
Uṭṭhāhikā10 analasā, saṅgahitaparijjanā; Bhattu manāpaṁ carati, sambhataṁ anurakkhati.
She gets up early, works tirelessly, and manages the domestic help. She’s lovable to her husband, and preserves his wealth.
या एवं वत्तति नारी, भत्तु छन्दवसानुगा; मनापा नाम ते देवा, यत्थ सा उपपज्जती”ति।
Yā evaṁ vattati nārī, bhattu chandavasānugā; Manāpā nāma te11 devā, yattha sā upapajjatī”ti.
A lady who fulfills these duties according to her husband’s desire, is reborn among the gods called ‘Lovable’.”
