Diligence
“यावता, भिक्खवे, सत्ता अपदा वा द्विपदा वा चतुप्पदा वा बहुप्पदा वा रूपिनो वा अरूपिनो वा सञ्ञिनो वा असञ्ञिनो वा नेवसञ्ञिनासञ्ञिनो वा, तथागतो तेसं अग्गमक्खायति अरहं सम्मासम्बुद्धो; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, ये केचि कुसला धम्मा, सब्बे ते अप्पमादमूलका अप्पमादसमोसरणा। अप्पमादो तेसं अग्गमक्खायति।
“Yāvatā, bhikkhave, sattā apadā vā dvipadā vā catuppadā vā bahuppadā vā rūpino vā arūpino vā saññino vā asaññino vā nevasaññināsaññino vā, tathāgato tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati arahaṁ sammāsambuddho; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, ye keci kusalā dhammā, sabbe te appamādamūlakā appamādasamosaraṇā. Appamādo tesaṁ1 aggamakkhāyati.
“Bhikkhus, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha, is said to be the best of all sentient beings—be they footless, with two feet, four feet, or many feet; with form or formless; with perception or without perception or with neither perception nor non-perception. In the same way, all skillful qualities are rooted in diligence and meet at diligence, and diligence is said to be the best of them.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, यानि कानिचि जङ्गलानं पाणानं पदजातानि, सब्बानि तानि हत्थिपदे समोधानं गच्छन्ति, हत्थिपदं तेसं अग्गमक्खायति, यदिदं महन्तत्तेन; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, ये केचि कुसला धम्मा, सब्बे ते अप्पमादमूलका अप्पमादसमोसरणा। अप्पमादो तेसं अग्गमक्खायति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yāni kānici jaṅgalānaṁ2 pāṇānaṁ padajātāni, sabbāni tāni hatthipade samodhānaṁ gacchanti, hatthipadaṁ tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ mahantattena; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, ye keci kusalā dhammā, sabbe te appamādamūlakā appamādasamosaraṇā. Appamādo tesaṁ3 aggamakkhāyati.
The footprints of all creatures that walk can fit inside an elephant’s footprint, so an elephant’s footprint is said to be the biggest of them all. In the same way, all skillful qualities are rooted in diligence and meet at diligence, and diligence is said to be the best of them.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, कूटागारस्स या काचि गोपानसियो सब्बा ता कूटङ्गमा कूटनिन्ना कूटसमोसरणा, कूटो तासं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, ये केचि कुसला धम्मा, सब्बे ते अप्पमादमूलका अप्पमादसमोसरणा। अप्पमादो तेसं अग्गमक्खायति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, kūṭāgārassa yā kāci gopānasiyo sabbā tā kūṭaṅgamā kūṭaninnā kūṭasamosaraṇā, kūṭo tāsaṁ aggamakkhāyati; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, ye keci kusalā dhammā, sabbe te appamādamūlakā appamādasamosaraṇā. Appamādo tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati.
The rafters of a bungalow all lean to the peak, slope to the peak, and meet at the peak, so the peak is said to be the topmost of them all. In the same way, all skillful qualities are rooted in diligence and meet at diligence, and diligence is said to be the best of them.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, ये केचि मूलगन्धा, काळानुसारियं तेसं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे …पे…।

Of all kinds of fragrant root, spikenard is said to be the best. In the same way …

Of all kinds of fragrant flower, jasmine is said to be the best. In the same way …
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, ये केचि खुद्दराजानो, सब्बे ते रञ्ञो चक्कवत्तिस्स अनुयन्ता भवन्ति, राजा तेसं चक्कवत्ती अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे …पे…।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ye keci khuddarājāno, sabbe te rañño cakkavattissa anuyantā bhavanti, rājā tesaṁ cakkavattī aggamakkhāyati; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave …pe….
All lesser kings are vassals of a wheel-turning monarch, so the wheel-turning monarch is said to be the foremost of them all. In the same way …
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, या काचि तारकरूपानं पभा, सब्बा ता चन्दप्पभाय कलं नाग्घन्ति सोळसिं, चन्दप्पभा तासं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे …पे…।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yā kāci tārakarūpānaṁ pabhā, sabbā tā candappabhāya kalaṁ nāgghanti soḷasiṁ, candappabhā tāsaṁ aggamakkhāyati; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave …pe….
The radiance of all the stars is not worth a sixteenth part of the moon’s radiance, so the moon’s radiance is said to be the best of them all. In the same way …

After the rainy season the sky is clear and cloudless. And when the sun rises, it dispels all the darkness from the sky as it shines and glows and radiates. In the same way …
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, या काचि महानदियो, सेय्यथिदं—गङ्गा, यमुना, अचिरवती, सरभू, मही, सब्बा ता समुद्दङ्गमा समुद्दनिन्ना समुद्दपोणा समुद्दपब्भारा, महासमुद्दो तासं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, ये केचि कुसला धम्मा, सब्बे ते अप्पमादमूलका अप्पमादसमोसरणा। अप्पमादो तेसं अग्गमक्खायती”ति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, yā kāci mahānadiyo, seyyathidaṁ—gaṅgā, yamunā, aciravatī, sarabhū, mahī, sabbā tā samuddaṅgamā samuddaninnā samuddapoṇā samuddapabbhārā, mahāsamuddo tāsaṁ aggamakkhāyati; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, ye keci kusalā dhammā, sabbe te appamādamūlakā appamādasamosaraṇā. Appamādo tesaṁ aggamakkhāyatī”ti.
All the great rivers—that is, the Ganges, Yamunā, Aciravatī, Sarabhū, and Mahī—flow, slant, slope, and incline towards the ocean, and the ocean is said to be the greatest of them. In the same way, all skillful qualities are rooted in diligence and meet at diligence, and diligence is said to be the best of them.”
