    Diligence

    “चतूहि, भिक्खवे, ठानेहि अप्पमादो करणीयो। कतमेहि चतूहि? कायदुच्चरितं, भिक्खवे, पजहथ, कायसुचरितं भावेथ; तत्थ च मा पमादत्थ। वचीदुच्चरितं, भिक्खवे, पजहथ, वचीसुचरितं भावेथ; तत्थ च मा पमादत्थ। मनोदुच्चरितं, भिक्खवे, पजहथ, मनोसुचरितं भावेथ; तत्थ च मा पमादत्थ। मिच्छादिट्ठिं, भिक्खवे, पजहथ, सम्मादिट्ठिं भावेथ; तत्थ च मा पमादत्थ।

    “Catūhi, bhikkhave, ṭhānehi appamādo karaṇīyo. Katamehi catūhi? Kāyaduccaritaṁ, bhikkhave, pajahatha, kāyasucaritaṁ bhāvetha; tattha ca mā pamādattha. Vacīduccaritaṁ, bhikkhave, pajahatha, vacīsucaritaṁ bhāvetha; tattha ca mā pamādattha. Manoduccaritaṁ, bhikkhave, pajahatha, manosucaritaṁ bhāvetha; tattha ca mā pamādattha. Micchādiṭṭhiṁ, bhikkhave, pajahatha, sammādiṭṭhiṁ bhāvetha; tattha ca mā pamādattha.

    “Bhikkhus, you should be diligent in four situations. What four? Give up bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind; and develop good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. Don’t neglect these things. Give up wrong view; and develop right view. Don’t neglect this.

    यतो खो, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो कायदुच्चरितं पहीनं होति कायसुचरितं भावितं, वचीदुच्चरितं पहीनं होति वचीसुचरितं भावितं, मनोदुच्चरितं पहीनं होति मनोसुचरितं भावितं, मिच्छादिट्ठि पहीना होति सम्मादिट्ठि भाविता, सो न भायति सम्परायिकस्स मरणस्सा”ति।

    Yato kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno kāyaduccaritaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti kāyasucaritaṁ bhāvitaṁ, vacīduccaritaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti vacīsucaritaṁ bhāvitaṁ, manoduccaritaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti manosucaritaṁ bhāvitaṁ, micchādiṭṭhi pahīnā hoti sammādiṭṭhi bhāvitā, so na bhāyati samparāyikassa maraṇassā”ti.

    A bhikkhu who has done these things does not fear death in lives to come.”
