Diligence
अथ खो अञ्ञतरो ब्राह्मणो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो सो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:
Atha kho aññataro brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
“अत्थि नु खो, भो गोतम, एको धम्मो भावितो बहुलीकतो यो उभो अत्थे समधिग्गय्ह तिट्ठति—दिट्ठधम्मिकञ्चेव अत्थं, यो च अत्थो सम्परायिको”ति?
“Atthi nu kho, bho gotama, eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko”ti?
“Master Gotama, is there one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come?”
“अत्थि खो, ब्राह्मण, एको धम्मो भावितो बहुलीकतो यो उभो अत्थे समधिग्गय्ह तिट्ठति—दिट्ठधम्मिकञ्चेव अत्थं, यो च अत्थो सम्परायिको”ति।
“Atthi kho, brāhmaṇa, eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko”ti.
“There is, brahmin.”
“कतमो पन, भो गोतम, एको धम्मो भावितो बहुलीकतो यो उभो अत्थे समधिग्गय्ह तिट्ठति—दिट्ठधम्मिकञ्चेव अत्थं, यो च अत्थो सम्परायिको”ति?
“Katamo pana, bho gotama, eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato yo ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko”ti?
“So what is it?”
“अप्पमादो खो, ब्राह्मण, एको धम्मो भावितो बहुलीकतो उभो अत्थे समधिग्गय्ह तिट्ठति—दिट्ठधम्मिकञ्चेव अत्थं, यो च अत्थो सम्परायिको।
“Appamādo kho, brāhmaṇa, eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko.
“Diligence, brahmin, is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.
सेय्यथापि, ब्राह्मण, यानि कानिचि जङ्गलानं पाणानं पदजातानि, सब्बानि तानि हत्थिपदे समोधानं गच्छन्ति; हत्थिपदं तेसं अग्गमक्खायति, यदिदं महन्तत्तेन। एवमेवं खो, ब्राह्मण, अप्पमादो एको धम्मो भावितो बहुलीकतो उभो अत्थे समधिग्गय्ह तिट्ठति—दिट्ठधम्मिकञ्चेव अत्थं, यो च अत्थो सम्परायिको।
Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, yāni kānici jaṅgalānaṁ1 pāṇānaṁ padajātāni, sabbāni tāni hatthipade samodhānaṁ gacchanti; hatthipadaṁ tesaṁ aggamakkhāyati, yadidaṁ mahantattena. Evamevaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, appamādo eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko.
The footprints of all creatures that walk can fit inside an elephant’s footprint. So an elephant’s footprint is said to be the biggest of them all. In the same way, diligence is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.
सेय्यथापि, ब्राह्मण, कूटागारस्स या काचि गोपानसियो सब्बा ता कूटङ्गमा कूटनिन्ना कूटसमोसरणा, कूटं तासं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेवं खो, ब्राह्मण …पे…।
Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, kūṭāgārassa yā kāci gopānasiyo sabbā tā kūṭaṅgamā kūṭaninnā kūṭasamosaraṇā, kūṭaṁ tāsaṁ aggamakkhāyati; evamevaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa …pe….
The rafters of a bungalow all lean to the peak, slope to the peak, and meet at the peak, so the peak is said to be the topmost of them all. In the same way, diligence is one thing …

सेय्यथापि, ब्राह्मण, या काचि तारकरूपानं पभा सब्बा ता चन्दस्स पभाय कलं नाग्घन्ति सोळसिं, चन्दप्पभा तासं अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेवं खो, ब्राह्मण, अप्पमादो एको धम्मो भावितो बहुलीकतो उभो अत्थे समधिग्गय्ह तिट्ठति—दिट्ठधम्मिकञ्चेव अत्थं यो च अत्थो सम्परायिको।
Seyyathāpi, brāhmaṇa, yā kāci tārakarūpānaṁ pabhā sabbā tā candassa pabhāya kalaṁ nāgghanti soḷasiṁ, candappabhā tāsaṁ aggamakkhāyati; evamevaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, appamādo eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ yo ca attho samparāyiko.
The radiance of all the stars is not worth a sixteenth part of the moon’s radiance, so the moon’s radiance is said to be the best of them all. In the same way, diligence is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.
अयं खो, ब्राह्मण, एको धम्मो भावितो बहुलीकतो उभो अत्थे समधिग्गय्ह तिट्ठति—दिट्ठधम्मिकञ्चेव अत्थं, यो च अत्थो सम्परायिको”ति।
Ayaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, eko dhammo bhāvito bahulīkato ubho atthe samadhiggayha tiṭṭhati—diṭṭhadhammikañceva atthaṁ, yo ca attho samparāyiko”ti.
This is the one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.”
“अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम, अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… उपासकं मं भवं गोतमो धारेतु अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।
“Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
“Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
