“पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, आरञ्ञिका। कतमे पञ्च? मन्दत्ता मोमूहत्ता आरञ्ञिको होति, पापिच्छो इच्छापकतो आरञ्ञिको होति, उम्मादा चित्तक्खेपा आरञ्ञिको होति, वण्णितं बुद्धेहि बुद्धसावकेहीति आरञ्ञिको होति, अप्पिच्छतंयेव निस्साय सन्तुट्ठिंयेव निस्साय सल्लेखंयेव निस्साय पविवेकंयेव निस्साय इदमत्थितंयेव निस्साय आरञ्ञिको होति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च आरञ्ञिका। इमेसं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नं आरञ्ञिकानं य्वायं आरञ्ञिको अप्पिच्छतंयेव निस्साय सन्तुट्ठिंयेव निस्साय सल्लेखंयेव निस्साय पविवेकंयेव निस्साय इदमत्थितंयेव निस्साय आरञ्ञिको होति, अयं इमेसं पञ्चन्नं आरञ्ञिकानं अग्गो च सेट्ठो च मोक्खो च उत्तमो च पवरो च।
“Pañcime, bhikkhave, āraññikā. Katame pañca? Mandattā momūhattā āraññiko hoti, pāpiccho icchāpakato āraññiko hoti, ummādā cittakkhepā āraññiko hoti, vaṇṇitaṁ buddhehi buddhasāvakehīti āraññiko hoti, appicchataṁyeva nissāya santuṭṭhiṁyeva nissāya sallekhaṁyeva nissāya pavivekaṁyeva nissāya idamatthitaṁyeva1 nissāya āraññiko hoti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca āraññikā. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcannaṁ āraññikānaṁ yvāyaṁ āraññiko appicchataṁyeva nissāya santuṭṭhiṁyeva nissāya sallekhaṁyeva nissāya pavivekaṁyeva nissāya idamatthitaṁyeva nissāya āraññiko hoti, ayaṁ imesaṁ pañcannaṁ āraññikānaṁ aggo ca seṭṭho ca mokkho ca uttamo ca pavaro ca.
“Bhikkhus, there are these five kinds of wilderness dwellers. What five? A person may be wilderness dweller because of stupidity and folly. Or because of corrupt wishes, being of wishful temperament. Or because of madness and mental disorder. Or because it is praised by the Buddhas and their disciples. Or for the sake of having few wishes, for the sake of contentment, self-effacement, seclusion, and simplicity. These are the five kinds of wilderness dwellers. But the person who dwells in the wilderness for the sake of having few wishes is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of the five.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, गवा खीरं, खीरम्हा दधि, दधिम्हा नवनीतं, नवनीतम्हा सप्पि, सप्पिम्हा सप्पिमण्डो, सप्पिमण्डो तत्थ अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, इमेसं पञ्चन्नं आरञ्ञिकानं य्वायं आरञ्ञिको अप्पिच्छतंयेव निस्साय सन्तुट्ठिंयेव निस्साय सल्लेखंयेव निस्साय पविवेकंयेव निस्साय इदमत्थितंयेव निस्साय आरञ्ञिको होति, अयं इमेसं पञ्चन्नं आरञ्ञिकानं अग्गो च सेट्ठो च मोक्खो च उत्तमो च पवरो चा”ति।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, gavā khīraṁ, khīramhā dadhi, dadhimhā navanītaṁ, navanītamhā sappi, sappimhā sappimaṇḍo, sappimaṇḍo2 tattha aggamakkhāyati; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, imesaṁ pañcannaṁ āraññikānaṁ yvāyaṁ āraññiko appicchataṁyeva nissāya santuṭṭhiṁyeva nissāya sallekhaṁyeva nissāya pavivekaṁyeva nissāya idamatthitaṁyeva nissāya āraññiko hoti, ayaṁ imesaṁ pañcannaṁ āraññikānaṁ aggo ca seṭṭho ca mokkho ca uttamo ca pavaro cā”ti.
From a cow comes milk, from milk comes curds, from curds come butter, from butter comes ghee, and from ghee comes cream of ghee. And the cream of ghee is said to be the best of these. In the same way, the person who dwells in the wilderness for the sake of having few wishes is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of the five.”
