    Ariyavaṁsasutta

    The Noble Traditions

    “चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, अरियवंसा अग्गञ्ञा रत्तञ्ञा वंसञ्ञा पोराणा असङ्किण्णा असङ्किण्णपुब्बा, न सङ्कीयन्ति न सङ्कीयिस्सन्ति, अप्पटिकुट्ठा समणेहि ब्राह्मणेहि विञ्ञूहि। कतमे चत्तारो?

    “Cattārome, bhikkhave, ariyavaṁsā aggaññā rattaññā vaṁsaññā porāṇā asaṅkiṇṇā asaṅkiṇṇapubbā, na saṅkīyanti na saṅkīyissanti, appaṭikuṭṭhā samaṇehi brāhmaṇehi viññūhi. Katame cattāro?

    “Bhikkhus, these four noble traditions are primordial, long-standing, traditional, and ancient. They are uncorrupted, as they have been since the beginning. They’re not being corrupted now, nor will they be. Sensible ascetics and brahmins don’t look down on them. What four?

    इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सन्तुट्ठो होति इतरीतरेन चीवरेन, इतरीतरचीवरसन्तुट्ठिया च वण्णवादी, न च चीवरहेतु अनेसनं अप्पतिरूपं आपज्जति, अलद्धा च चीवरं न परितस्सति, लद्धा च चीवरं अगधितो अमुच्छितो अनज्झोसन्नो आदीनवदस्सावी निस्सरणपञ्ञो परिभुञ्जति; ताय च पन इतरीतरचीवरसन्तुट्ठिया नेवत्तानुक्कंसेति, नो परं वम्भेति। यो हि तत्थ दक्खो अनलसो सम्पजानो पतिस्सतो, अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु पोराणे अग्गञ्ञे अरियवंसे ठितो।

    Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti itarītarena cīvarena, itarītaracīvarasantuṭṭhiyā ca vaṇṇavādī, na ca cīvarahetu anesanaṁ appatirūpaṁ āpajjati, aladdhā ca cīvaraṁ na paritassati, laddhā ca cīvaraṁ agadhito1 amucchito anajjhosanno ādīnavadassāvī nissaraṇapañño paribhuñjati; tāya ca pana itarītaracīvarasantuṭṭhiyā nevattānukkaṁseti, no paraṁ vambheti. Yo hi tattha dakkho analaso sampajāno patissato, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhikkhu porāṇe aggaññe ariyavaṁse ṭhito.

    Firstly, a bhikkhu is content with any kind of robe, and praises such contentment. They don’t try to get hold of a robe in an improper way. They don’t get upset if they don’t get a robe. And if they do get a robe, they use it untied, uninfatuated, unattached, seeing the drawback, and understanding the escape. But they don’t glorify themselves or put others down on account of their contentment. A bhikkhu who is deft, tireless, aware, and mindful in this is said to stand in the ancient, primordial noble tradition.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सन्तुट्ठो होति इतरीतरेन पिण्डपातेन, इतरीतरपिण्डपातसन्तुट्ठिया च वण्णवादी, न च पिण्डपातहेतु अनेसनं अप्पतिरूपं आपज्जति, अलद्धा च पिण्डपातं न परितस्सति, लद्धा च पिण्डपातं अगधितो अमुच्छितो अनज्झोसन्नो आदीनवदस्सावी निस्सरणपञ्ञो परिभुञ्जति; ताय च पन इतरीतरपिण्डपातसन्तुट्ठिया नेवत्तानुक्कंसेति, नो परं वम्भेति। यो हि तत्थ दक्खो अनलसो सम्पजानो पतिस्सतो, अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु पोराणे अग्गञ्ञे अरियवंसे ठितो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti itarītarena piṇḍapātena, itarītarapiṇḍapātasantuṭṭhiyā ca vaṇṇavādī, na ca piṇḍapātahetu anesanaṁ appatirūpaṁ āpajjati, aladdhā ca piṇḍapātaṁ na paritassati, laddhā ca piṇḍapātaṁ agadhito amucchito anajjhosanno ādīnavadassāvī nissaraṇapañño paribhuñjati; tāya ca pana itarītarapiṇḍapātasantuṭṭhiyā nevattānukkaṁseti, no paraṁ vambheti. Yo hi tattha dakkho analaso sampajāno patissato, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhikkhu porāṇe aggaññe ariyavaṁse ṭhito.

    Furthermore, a bhikkhu is content with any kind of almsfood …

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सन्तुट्ठो होति इतरीतरेन सेनासनेन, इतरीतरसेनासनसन्तुट्ठिया च वण्णवादी, न च सेनासनहेतु अनेसनं अप्पतिरूपं आपज्जति, अलद्धा च सेनासनं न परितस्सति, लद्धा च सेनासनं अगधितो अमुच्छितो अनज्झोसन्नो आदीनवदस्सावी निस्सरणपञ्ञो परिभुञ्जति; ताय च पन इतरीतरसेनासनसन्तुट्ठिया नेवत्तानुक्कंसेति, नो परं वम्भेति। यो हि तत्थ दक्खो अनलसो सम्पजानो पतिस्सतो, अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु पोराणे अग्गञ्ञे अरियवंसे ठितो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu santuṭṭho hoti itarītarena senāsanena, itarītarasenāsanasantuṭṭhiyā ca vaṇṇavādī, na ca senāsanahetu anesanaṁ appatirūpaṁ āpajjati, aladdhā ca senāsanaṁ na paritassati, laddhā ca senāsanaṁ agadhito amucchito anajjhosanno ādīnavadassāvī nissaraṇapañño paribhuñjati; tāya ca pana itarītarasenāsanasantuṭṭhiyā nevattānukkaṁseti, no paraṁ vambheti. Yo hi tattha dakkho analaso sampajāno patissato, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhikkhu porāṇe aggaññe ariyavaṁse ṭhito.

    Furthermore, a bhikkhu is content with any kind of lodgings …

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु भावनारामो होति भावनारतो, पहानारामो होति पहानरतो; ताय च पन भावनारामताय भावनारतिया पहानारामताय पहानरतिया नेवत्तानुक्कंसेति, नो परं वम्भेति। यो हि तत्थ दक्खो अनलसो सम्पजानो पतिस्सतो, अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु पोराणे अग्गञ्ञे अरियवंसे ठितो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhu bhāvanārāmo hoti bhāvanārato, pahānārāmo hoti pahānarato; tāya ca pana bhāvanārāmatāya bhāvanāratiyā pahānārāmatāya pahānaratiyā nevattānukkaṁseti, no paraṁ vambheti. Yo hi tattha dakkho analaso sampajāno patissato, ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, bhikkhu porāṇe aggaññe ariyavaṁse ṭhito.

    Furthermore, a bhikkhu enjoys meditation and loves to meditate. They enjoy giving up and love to give up. But they don’t glorify themselves or put down others on account of their love for meditation and giving up. A bhikkhu who is deft, tireless, aware, and mindful in this is said to stand in the ancient, primordial noble tradition.

    इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो अरियवंसा अग्गञ्ञा रत्तञ्ञा वंसञ्ञा पोराणा असङ्किण्णा असङ्किण्णपुब्बा, न सङ्कीयन्ति न सङ्कीयिस्सन्ति, अप्पटिकुट्ठा समणेहि ब्राह्मणेहि विञ्ञूहि।

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro ariyavaṁsā aggaññā rattaññā vaṁsaññā porāṇā asaṅkiṇṇā asaṅkiṇṇapubbā, na saṅkīyanti na saṅkīyissanti, appaṭikuṭṭhā samaṇehi brāhmaṇehi viññūhi.

    These four noble traditions are primordial, long-standing, traditional, and ancient. They are uncorrupted, as they have been since the beginning. They’re not being corrupted now nor will they be. Sensible ascetics and brahmins don’t look down on them.

    इमेहि च पन, भिक्खवे, चतूहि अरियवंसेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु पुरत्थिमाय चेपि दिसाय विहरति स्वेव अरतिं सहति, न तं अरति सहति; पच्छिमाय चेपि दिसाय विहरति स्वेव अरतिं सहति, न तं अरति सहति; उत्तराय चेपि दिसाय विहरति स्वेव अरतिं सहति, न तं अरति सहति; दक्खिणाय चेपि दिसाय विहरति स्वेव अरतिं सहति, न तं अरति सहति। तं किस्स हेतु? अरतिरतिसहो हि, भिक्खवे, धीरोति।

    Imehi ca pana, bhikkhave, catūhi ariyavaṁsehi samannāgato bhikkhu puratthimāya cepi disāya viharati sveva aratiṁ sahati, na taṁ arati sahati; pacchimāya cepi disāya viharati sveva aratiṁ sahati, na taṁ arati sahati; uttarāya cepi disāya viharati sveva aratiṁ sahati, na taṁ arati sahati; dakkhiṇāya cepi disāya viharati sveva aratiṁ sahati, na taṁ arati sahati. Taṁ kissa hetu? Aratiratisaho hi, bhikkhave, dhīroti.

    When a bhikkhu has these four noble traditions, if they live in the east they prevail over discontent, and discontent doesn’t prevail over them. If they live in the west … the north … the south, they prevail over discontent, and discontent doesn’t prevail over them. Why is that? Because a wise one prevails over desire and discontent.

    नारति सहति धीरं, नारति धीरं सहति; धीरोव अरतिं सहति, धीरो हि अरतिस्सहो।

    Nārati sahati dhīraṁ, nārati dhīraṁ sahati; Dhīrova aratiṁ sahati, dhīro hi aratissaho.

    Discontent doesn’t prevail over a wise one; for the wise one is not beaten by discontent. A wise one prevails over discontent, for the wise one is a beater of discontent.

    सब्बकम्मविहायीनं, पनुण्णं को निवारये; नेक्खं जम्बोनदस्सेव, को तं निन्दितुमरहति; देवापि नं पसंसन्ति, ब्रह्मुनापि पसंसितो”ति।

    Sabbakammavihāyīnaṁ, panuṇṇaṁ2 ko nivāraye; Nekkhaṁ jambonadasseva, ko taṁ ninditumarahati; Devāpi naṁ pasaṁsanti, brahmunāpi pasaṁsito”ti.

    Who can hold back the dispeller, who’s thrown away all karma? Like a pendant of river gold, who is worthy to criticize them? Even the gods praise them, and by Brahmā, too, they’re praised.”
