    The Chapter on Hopes That Are Hard to Give Up

    “द्वेमा, भिक्खवे, आसा दुप्पजहा। कतमा द्वे? लाभासा च जीवितासा च। इमा खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे आसा दुप्पजहा”ति।

    “Dvemā, bhikkhave, āsā duppajahā. Katamā dve? Lābhāsā ca jīvitāsā ca. Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve āsā duppajahā”ti.

    “These two hopes are hard to give up. What two? The hope for wealth and the hope for long life. These are two hopes that are hard to give up.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला दुल्लभा लोकस्मिं। कतमे द्वे? यो च पुब्बकारी, यो च कतञ्ञू कतवेदी। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पुग्गला दुल्लभा लोकस्मिन्”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, puggalā dullabhā lokasmiṁ. Katame dve? Yo ca pubbakārī, yo ca kataññū katavedī. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā dullabhā lokasmin”ti.

    “These two people are rare in the world. What two? One who takes the initiative, and one who is grateful and thankful. These are the two people who are rare in the world.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला दुल्लभा लोकस्मिं। कतमे द्वे? तित्तो च तप्पेता च। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पुग्गला दुल्लभा लोकस्मिन्”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, puggalā dullabhā lokasmiṁ. Katame dve? Titto ca tappetā ca. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā dullabhā lokasmin”ti.

    “These two people are rare in the world. What two? One who is satisfied, and one who satisfies others. These are the two people who are rare in the world.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला दुत्तप्पया। कतमे द्वे? यो च लद्धं लद्धं निक्खिपति, यो च लद्धं लद्धं विस्सज्जेति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पुग्गला दुत्तप्पया”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, puggalā duttappayā. Katame dve? Yo ca laddhaṁ laddhaṁ nikkhipati, yo ca laddhaṁ laddhaṁ vissajjeti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā duttappayā”ti.

    “These two people are hard to satisfy in the world. What two? One who continually hoards wealth, and one who continually wastes wealth. These are the two people who are hard to satisfy in the world.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला सुतप्पया। कतमे द्वे? यो च लद्धं लद्धं न निक्खिपति, यो च लद्धं लद्धं न विस्सज्जेति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पुग्गला सुतप्पया”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, puggalā sutappayā. Katame dve? Yo ca laddhaṁ laddhaṁ na nikkhipati, yo ca laddhaṁ laddhaṁ na vissajjeti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā sutappayā”ti.

    “These two people are easy to satisfy in the world. What two? One who does not continually hoard wealth, and one who does not continually waste wealth. These are the two people who are easy to satisfy in the world.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पच्चया रागस्स उप्पादाय। कतमे द्वे? सुभनिमित्तञ्च अयोनिसो च मनसिकारो। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पच्चया रागस्स उप्पादाया”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, paccayā rāgassa uppādāya. Katame dve? Subhanimittañca ayoniso ca manasikāro. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paccayā rāgassa uppādāyā”ti.

    “There are two conditions for the arising of greed. What two? The feature of beauty and irrational application of mind. These are the two conditions for the arising of greed.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पच्चया दोसस्स उप्पादाय। कतमे द्वे? पटिघनिमित्तञ्च अयोनिसो च मनसिकारो। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पच्चया दोसस्स उप्पादाया”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, paccayā dosassa uppādāya. Katame dve? Paṭighanimittañca ayoniso ca manasikāro. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paccayā dosassa uppādāyā”ti.

    “There are two conditions for the arising of hate. What two? The feature of harshness and irrational application of mind. These are the two conditions for the arising of hate.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पच्चया मिच्छादिट्ठिया उप्पादाय। कतमे द्वे? परतो च घोसो अयोनिसो च मनसिकारो। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पच्चया मिच्छादिट्ठिया उप्पादाया”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, paccayā micchādiṭṭhiyā uppādāya. Katame dve? Parato ca ghoso ayoniso ca manasikāro. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paccayā micchādiṭṭhiyā uppādāyā”ti.

    “There are two conditions for the arising of wrong view. What two? The words of another and irrational application of mind. These are the two conditions for the arising of wrong view.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पच्चया सम्मादिट्ठिया उप्पादाय। कतमे द्वे? परतो च घोसो, योनिसो च मनसिकारो। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पच्चया सम्मादिट्ठिया उप्पादाया”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, paccayā sammādiṭṭhiyā uppādāya. Katame dve? Parato ca ghoso, yoniso ca manasikāro. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paccayā sammādiṭṭhiyā uppādāyā”ti.

    “There are two conditions for the arising of right view. What two? The words of another and rational application of mind. These are the two conditions for the arising of right view.”

    “द्वेमा, भिक्खवे, आपत्तियो। कतमा द्वे? लहुका च आपत्ति, गरुका च आपत्ति। इमा खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे आपत्तियो”ति।

    “Dvemā, bhikkhave, āpattiyo. Katamā dve? Lahukā ca āpatti, garukā ca āpatti. Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve āpattiyo”ti.

    “There are these two offenses. What two? A light offense and a serious offense. These are the two offenses.”

    “द्वेमा, भिक्खवे, आपत्तियो। कतमा द्वे? दुट्ठुल्ला च आपत्ति, अदुट्ठुल्ला च आपत्ति। इमा खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे आपत्तियो”ति।

    “Dvemā, bhikkhave, āpattiyo. Katamā dve? Duṭṭhullā ca āpatti, aduṭṭhullā ca āpatti. Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve āpattiyo”ti.

    “There are these two offenses. What two? An offense with corrupt intention and an offense without corrupt intention. These are the two offenses.”

    “द्वेमा, भिक्खवे, आपत्तियो। कतमा द्वे? सावसेसा च आपत्ति, अनवसेसा च आपत्ति। इमा खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे आपत्तियो”ति।

    “Dvemā, bhikkhave, āpattiyo. Katamā dve? Sāvasesā ca āpatti, anavasesā ca āpatti. Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve āpattiyo”ti.

    “There are these two offenses. What two? An offense requiring rehabilitation and an offense not requiring rehabilitation. These are the two offenses.”

    आसादुप्पजहवग्गो पठमो।
