The Simile of the Vipers
“सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो आसीविसा उग्गतेजा घोरविसा। अथ पुरिसो आगच्छेय्य जीवितुकामो अमरितुकामो सुखकामो दुक्खप्पटिकूलो।
“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, cattāro āsīvisā uggatejā ghoravisā. Atha puriso āgaccheyya jīvitukāmo amaritukāmo sukhakāmo dukkhappaṭikūlo.
“Bhikkhus, suppose there were four lethal poisonous vipers. Then a person would come along who wants to live and doesn’t want to die, who wants to be happy and recoils from pain.
तमेनं एवं वदेय्युं: ‘इमे ते, अम्भो पुरिस, चत्तारो आसीविसा उग्गतेजा घोरविसा कालेन कालं वुट्ठापेतब्बा, कालेन कालं न्हापेतब्बा, कालेन कालं भोजेतब्बा, कालेन कालं संवेसेतब्बा। यदा च खो ते, अम्भो पुरिस, इमेसं चतुन्नं आसीविसानं उग्गतेजानं घोरविसानं अञ्ञतरो वा अञ्ञतरो वा कुप्पिस्सति, ततो त्वं, अम्भो पुरिस, मरणं वा निगच्छसि, मरणमत्तं वा दुक्खं। यं ते, अम्भो पुरिस, करणीयं तं करोहीऽति।
Tamenaṁ evaṁ vadeyyuṁ: ‘ime te, ambho purisa, cattāro āsīvisā uggatejā ghoravisā kālena kālaṁ vuṭṭhāpetabbā, kālena kālaṁ nhāpetabbā, kālena kālaṁ bhojetabbā, kālena kālaṁ saṁvesetabbā. Yadā ca kho te, ambho purisa, imesaṁ catunnaṁ āsīvisānaṁ uggatejānaṁ ghoravisānaṁ aññataro vā aññataro vā kuppissati, tato tvaṁ, ambho purisa, maraṇaṁ vā nigacchasi, maraṇamattaṁ vā dukkhaṁ. Yaṁ te, ambho purisa, karaṇīyaṁ taṁ karohī’ti.
They’d say to him, ‘Mister, here are four lethal poisonous vipers. They must be periodically picked up, washed, fed, and put to sleep. But when one or other of these four poisonous vipers gets angry with you, you’ll meet with death or deadly pain. So then, mister, do what has to be done.’
अथ खो सो, भिक्खवे, पुरिसो भीतो चतुन्नं आसीविसानं उग्गतेजानं घोरविसानं येन वा तेन वा पलायेथ।
Atha kho so, bhikkhave, puriso bhīto catunnaṁ āsīvisānaṁ uggatejānaṁ ghoravisānaṁ yena vā tena vā palāyetha.
Then that man, terrified of those four poisonous vipers, would flee this way or that.
तमेनं एवं वदेय्युं: ‘इमे खो, अम्भो पुरिस, पञ्च वधका पच्चत्थिका पिट्ठितो पिट्ठितो अनुबन्धा, यत्थेव नं पस्सिस्साम तत्थेव जीविता वोरोपेस्सामाति। यं ते, अम्भो पुरिस, करणीयं तं करोहीऽति।
Tamenaṁ evaṁ vadeyyuṁ: ‘ime kho, ambho purisa, pañca vadhakā paccatthikā piṭṭhito piṭṭhito anubandhā, yattheva naṁ passissāma tattheva jīvitā voropessāmāti. Yaṁ te, ambho purisa, karaṇīyaṁ taṁ karohī’ti.
They’d say to him, ‘Mister, there are five deadly enemies chasing you, thinking: “When we catch sight of him, we’ll murder him right there!” So then, mister, do what has to be done.’
अथ खो सो, भिक्खवे, पुरिसो भीतो चतुन्नं आसीविसानं उग्गतेजानं घोरविसानं, भीतो पञ्चन्नं वधकानं पच्चत्थिकानं येन वा तेन वा पलायेथ।
Atha kho so, bhikkhave, puriso bhīto catunnaṁ āsīvisānaṁ uggatejānaṁ ghoravisānaṁ, bhīto pañcannaṁ vadhakānaṁ paccatthikānaṁ yena vā tena vā palāyetha.
Then that man, terrified of those four poisonous vipers and those five deadly enemies, would flee this way or that.
तमेनं एवं वदेय्युं: ‘अयं ते, अम्भो पुरिस, छट्ठो अन्तरचरो वधको उक्खित्तासिको पिट्ठितो पिट्ठितो अनुबन्धो यत्थेव नं पस्सिस्सामि तत्थेव सिरो पातेस्सामीति। यं ते, अम्भो पुरिस, करणीयं तं करोहीऽति।
Tamenaṁ evaṁ vadeyyuṁ: ‘ayaṁ te, ambho purisa, chaṭṭho antaracaro vadhako ukkhittāsiko piṭṭhito piṭṭhito anubandho yattheva naṁ passissāmi tattheva siro pātessāmīti. Yaṁ te, ambho purisa, karaṇīyaṁ taṁ karohī’ti.
They’d say to him, ‘Mister, there’s a sixth hidden killer chasing you with a drawn sword, thinking: “When I catch sight of him, I’ll chop off his head right there!” So then, mister, do what has to be done.’
अथ खो सो, भिक्खवे, पुरिसो भीतो चतुन्नं आसीविसानं उग्गतेजानं घोरविसानं, भीतो पञ्चन्नं वधकानं पच्चत्थिकानं, भीतो छट्ठस्स अन्तरचरस्स वधकस्स उक्खित्तासिकस्स येन वा तेन वा पलायेथ।
Atha kho so, bhikkhave, puriso bhīto catunnaṁ āsīvisānaṁ uggatejānaṁ ghoravisānaṁ, bhīto pañcannaṁ vadhakānaṁ paccatthikānaṁ, bhīto chaṭṭhassa antaracarassa vadhakassa ukkhittāsikassa yena vā tena vā palāyetha.
Then that man, terrified of those four poisonous vipers and those five deadly enemies and the hidden killer, would flee this way or that.
सो पस्सेय्य सुञ्ञं गामं। यञ्ञदेव घरं पविसेय्य रित्तकञ्ञेव पविसेय्य तुच्छकञ्ञेव पविसेय्य सुञ्ञकञ्ञेव पविसेय्य। यञ्ञदेव भाजनं परिमसेय्य रित्तकञ्ञेव परिमसेय्य तुच्छकञ्ञेव परिमसेय्य सुञ्ञकञ्ञेव परिमसेय्य।
So passeyya suññaṁ gāmaṁ. Yaññadeva gharaṁ paviseyya rittakaññeva paviseyya tucchakaññeva paviseyya suññakaññeva paviseyya. Yaññadeva bhājanaṁ parimaseyya rittakaññeva parimaseyya tucchakaññeva parimaseyya suññakaññeva parimaseyya.
He’d see an empty village. But whatever house he enters is vacant, deserted, and empty. And whatever vessel he touches is vacant, hollow, and empty.
तमेनं एवं वदेय्युं: ‘इदानि, अम्भो पुरिस, इमं सुञ्ञं गामं चोरा गामघातका पविसन्ति। यं ते, अम्भो पुरिस, करणीयं तं करोहीऽति।
Tamenaṁ evaṁ vadeyyuṁ: ‘idāni, ambho purisa, imaṁ suññaṁ gāmaṁ corā gāmaghātakā pavisanti. Yaṁ te, ambho purisa, karaṇīyaṁ taṁ karohī’ti.
They’d say to him, ‘Mister, there are bandits who raid villages, and they’re striking now. So then, mister, do what has to be done.’
अथ खो सो, भिक्खवे, पुरिसो भीतो चतुन्नं आसीविसानं उग्गतेजानं घोरविसानं, भीतो पञ्चन्नं वधकानं पच्चत्थिकानं, भीतो छट्ठस्स अन्तरचरस्स वधकस्स उक्खित्तासिकस्स, भीतो चोरानं गामघातकानं येन वा तेन वा पलायेथ।
Atha kho so, bhikkhave, puriso bhīto catunnaṁ āsīvisānaṁ uggatejānaṁ ghoravisānaṁ, bhīto pañcannaṁ vadhakānaṁ paccatthikānaṁ, bhīto chaṭṭhassa antaracarassa vadhakassa ukkhittāsikassa, bhīto corānaṁ gāmaghātakānaṁ yena vā tena vā palāyetha.
Then that man, terrified of those four poisonous vipers and those five deadly enemies and the hidden killer and the bandits, would flee this way or that.
सो पस्सेय्य महन्तं उदकण्णवं ओरिमं तीरं सासङ्कं सप्पटिभयं, पारिमं तीरं खेमं अप्पटिभयं। न चस्स नावा सन्तारणी उत्तरसेतु वा अपारा पारं गमनाय।
So passeyya mahantaṁ udakaṇṇavaṁ orimaṁ tīraṁ sāsaṅkaṁ sappaṭibhayaṁ, pārimaṁ tīraṁ khemaṁ appaṭibhayaṁ. Na cassa nāvā santāraṇī uttarasetu vā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya.
He’d see a large deluge, whose near shore is dubious and perilous, while the far shore is a sanctuary free of peril. But there’s no ferryboat or bridge for crossing over.
अथ खो, भिक्खवे, तस्स पुरिसस्स एवमस्स: ‘अयं खो महाउदकण्णवो ओरिमं तीरं सासङ्कं सप्पटिभयं, पारिमं तीरं खेमं अप्पटिभयं, नत्थि च नावा सन्तारणी उत्तरसेतु वा अपारा पारं गमनाय। यन्नूनाहं तिणकट्ठसाखापलासं सङ्कड्ढित्वा कुल्लं बन्धित्वा तं कुल्लं निस्साय हत्थेहि च पादेहि च वायममानो सोत्थिना पारं गच्छेय्यन्ऽति।
Atha kho, bhikkhave, tassa purisassa evamassa: ‘ayaṁ kho mahāudakaṇṇavo orimaṁ tīraṁ sāsaṅkaṁ sappaṭibhayaṁ, pārimaṁ tīraṁ khemaṁ appaṭibhayaṁ, natthi ca1 nāvā santāraṇī uttarasetu vā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya. Yannūnāhaṁ tiṇakaṭṭhasākhāpalāsaṁ saṅkaḍḍhitvā kullaṁ bandhitvā taṁ kullaṁ nissāya hatthehi ca pādehi ca vāyamamāno sotthinā pāraṁ gaccheyyan’ti.
Then that man thought, ‘Why don’t I gather grass, sticks, branches, and leaves and make a raft? Riding on the raft, and paddling with my hands and feet, I can safely reach the far shore.’
अथ खो सो, भिक्खवे, पुरिसो तिणकट्ठसाखापलासं सङ्कड्ढित्वा कुल्लं बन्धित्वा तं कुल्लं निस्साय हत्थेहि च पादेहि च वायममानो सोत्थिना पारं गच्छेय्य, तिण्णो पारङ्गतो थले तिट्ठति ब्राह्मणो।
Atha kho so, bhikkhave, puriso tiṇakaṭṭhasākhāpalāsaṁ saṅkaḍḍhitvā kullaṁ bandhitvā taṁ kullaṁ nissāya hatthehi ca pādehi ca vāyamamāno sotthinā pāraṁ gaccheyya, tiṇṇo pāraṅgato2 thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇo.
And so that man did exactly that. Having crossed over and gone beyond, the brahmin stands on the far shore.
उपमा खो म्यायं, भिक्खवे, कता अत्थस्स विञ्ञापनाय। अयञ्चेत्थ अत्थो—
Upamā kho myāyaṁ, bhikkhave, katā atthassa viññāpanāya. Ayañcettha3 attho—
I’ve made up this simile to make a point. And this is the point.
चत्तारो आसीविसा उग्गतेजा घोरविसाति खो, भिक्खवे, चतुन्नेतं महाभूतानं अधिवचनं—पथवीधातुया, आपोधातुया, तेजोधातुया, वायोधातुया।
cattāro āsīvisā uggatejā ghoravisāti kho, bhikkhave, catunnetaṁ mahābhūtānaṁ adhivacanaṁ—pathavīdhātuyā, āpodhātuyā, tejodhātuyā, vāyodhātuyā.
‘Four lethal poisonous vipers’ is a term for the four primary elements: the elements of earth, water, fire, and air.
पञ्च वधका पच्चत्थिकाति खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चन्नेतं उपादानक्खन्धानं अधिवचनं, सेय्यथिदं—रूपुपादानक्खन्धस्स, वेदनुपादानक्खन्धस्स, सञ्ञुपादानक्खन्धस्स, सङ्खारुपादानक्खन्धस्स, विञ्ञाणुपादानक्खन्धस्स।
Pañca vadhakā paccatthikāti kho, bhikkhave, pañcannetaṁ upādānakkhandhānaṁ adhivacanaṁ, seyyathidaṁ—rūpupādānakkhandhassa, vedanupādānakkhandhassa, saññupādānakkhandhassa, saṅkhārupādānakkhandhassa, viññāṇupādānakkhandhassa.
‘Five deadly enemies’ is a term for the five grasping aggregates, that is: form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness.
छट्ठो अन्तरचरो वधको उक्खित्तासिकोति खो, भिक्खवे, नन्दीरागस्सेतं अधिवचनं।
Chaṭṭho antaracaro vadhako ukkhittāsikoti kho, bhikkhave, nandīrāgassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘The sixth hidden killer with a drawn sword’ is a term for relishing and greed.
सुञ्ञो गामोति खो, भिक्खवे, छन्नेतं अज्झत्तिकानं आयतनानं अधिवचनं। चक्खुतो चेपि नं, भिक्खवे, पण्डितो ब्यत्तो मेधावी उपपरिक्खति रित्तकञ्ञेव खायति, तुच्छकञ्ञेव खायति, सुञ्ञकञ्ञेव खायति …पे… जिव्हातो चेपि नं, भिक्खवे …पे… मनतो चेपि नं, भिक्खवे, पण्डितो ब्यत्तो मेधावी उपपरिक्खति रित्तकञ्ञेव खायति, तुच्छकञ्ञेव खायति, सुञ्ञकञ्ञेव खायति।
Suñño gāmoti kho, bhikkhave, channetaṁ ajjhattikānaṁ āyatanānaṁ adhivacanaṁ. Cakkhuto cepi naṁ, bhikkhave, paṇḍito byatto medhāvī upaparikkhati rittakaññeva khāyati, tucchakaññeva khāyati, suññakaññeva khāyati …pe… jivhāto cepi naṁ, bhikkhave …pe… manato cepi naṁ, bhikkhave, paṇḍito byatto medhāvī upaparikkhati rittakaññeva khāyati, tucchakaññeva khāyati, suññakaññeva khāyati.
‘Empty village’ is a term for the six interior sense fields. If an astute, competent, clever person investigates this in relation to the eye, it appears vacant, hollow, and empty. If an astute, competent, clever person investigates this in relation to the ear … nose … tongue … body … mind, it appears vacant, hollow, and empty.
चोरा गामघातकाति खो, भिक्खवे, छन्नेतं बाहिरानं आयतनानं अधिवचनं। चक्खु, भिक्खवे, हञ्ञति मनापामनापेसु रूपेसु; सोतं, भिक्खवे …पे… घानं, भिक्खवे …पे… जिव्हा, भिक्खवे, हञ्ञति मनापामनापेसु रसेसु; कायो, भिक्खवे …पे… मनो, भिक्खवे, हञ्ञति मनापामनापेसु धम्मेसु।
Corā gāmaghātakāti kho, bhikkhave, channetaṁ bāhirānaṁ āyatanānaṁ adhivacanaṁ. Cakkhu, bhikkhave, haññati manāpāmanāpesu rūpesu; sotaṁ, bhikkhave …pe… ghānaṁ, bhikkhave …pe… jivhā, bhikkhave, haññati manāpāmanāpesu rasesu; kāyo, bhikkhave …pe… mano, bhikkhave, haññati manāpāmanāpesu dhammesu.
‘Bandits who raid villages’ is a term for the six exterior sense fields. The eye is struck by both agreeable and disagreeable sights. The ear … nose … tongue … body … mind is struck by both agreeable and disagreeable thoughts.
महा उदकण्णवोति खो, भिक्खवे, चतुन्नेतं ओघानं अधिवचनं—कामोघस्स, भवोघस्स, दिट्ठोघस्स, अविज्जोघस्स।
Mahā udakaṇṇavoti kho, bhikkhave, catunnetaṁ oghānaṁ adhivacanaṁ—kāmoghassa, bhavoghassa, diṭṭhoghassa, avijjoghassa.
‘Large deluge’ is a term for the four floods: the floods of sensual pleasures, desire to be reborn, views, and ignorance.
ओरिमं तीरं सासङ्कं सप्पटिभयन्ति खो, भिक्खवे, सक्कायस्सेतं अधिवचनं।
Orimaṁ tīraṁ sāsaṅkaṁ sappaṭibhayanti kho, bhikkhave, sakkāyassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘The near shore that’s dubious and perilous’ is a term for identity.
पारिमं तीरं खेमं अप्पटिभयन्ति खो, भिक्खवे, निब्बानस्सेतं अधिवचनं।
Pārimaṁ tīraṁ khemaṁ appaṭibhayanti kho, bhikkhave, nibbānassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘The far shore, a sanctuary free of peril’ is a term for Nibbana.
कुल्लन्ति खो, भिक्खवे, अरियस्सेतं अट्ठङ्गिकस्स मग्गस्स अधिवचनं, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि …पे… सम्मासमाधि।
Kullanti kho, bhikkhave, ariyassetaṁ aṭṭhaṅgikassa maggassa adhivacanaṁ, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi.
‘The raft’ is a term for the noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.
तस्स हत्थेहि च पादेहि च वायामोति खो, भिक्खवे, वीरियारम्भस्सेतं अधिवचनं।
Tassa hatthehi ca pādehi ca vāyāmoti kho, bhikkhave, vīriyārambhassetaṁ adhivacanaṁ.
‘Paddling with hands and feet’ is a term for being energetic.
तिण्णो पारङ्गतो थले तिट्ठति ब्राह्मणोति खो, भिक्खवे, अरहतो एतं अधिवचनन्”ति।
Tiṇṇo pāraṅgato thale tiṭṭhati brāhmaṇoti kho, bhikkhave, arahato etaṁ adhivacanan”ti.
‘Crossed over, gone beyond, the brahmin stands on the shore’ is a term for a perfected one.”
