21. A Good Person

Faithless
“असप्पुरिसञ्च वो, भिक्खवे, देसेस्सामि, असप्पुरिसेन असप्पुरिसतरञ्च; सप्पुरिसञ्च, सप्पुरिसेन सप्पुरिसतरञ्च। तं सुणाथ …पे…।
“Asappurisañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, asappurisena asappurisatarañca; sappurisañca, sappurisena sappurisatarañca. Taṁ suṇātha …pe….
“Bhikkhus, I will teach you a bad person and a worse person, a good person and a better person.
“कतमो च, भिक्खवे, असप्पुरिसो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अस्सद्धो होति, अहिरिको होति, अनोत्तप्पी होति, अप्पस्सुतो होति, कुसीतो होति, मुट्ठस्सति होति, दुप्पञ्ञो होति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, असप्पुरिसो।
“Katamo ca, bhikkhave, asappuriso? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco assaddho hoti, ahiriko hoti, anottappī hoti, appassuto hoti, kusīto hoti, muṭṭhassati hoti, duppañño hoti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, asappuriso.
And what is a bad person? It’s someone who is faithless, shameless, imprudent, with little learning, lazy, unmindful, and witless. This is called a bad person.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, असप्पुरिसेन असप्पुरिसतरो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अत्तना च अस्सद्धो होति, परञ्च अस्सद्धिये समादपेति; अत्तना च अहिरिको होति, परञ्च अहिरिकताय समादपेति; अत्तना च अनोत्तप्पी होति, परञ्च अनोत्तप्पे समादपेति; अत्तना च अप्पस्सुतो होति, परञ्च अप्पस्सुते समादपेति; अत्तना च कुसीतो होति, परञ्च कोसज्जे समादपेति; अत्तना च मुट्ठस्सति होति, परञ्च मुट्ठस्सच्चे समादपेति; अत्तना च दुप्पञ्ञो होति, परञ्च दुप्पञ्ञताय समादपेति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, असप्पुरिसेन असप्पुरिसतरो।

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca assaddho hoti, parañca assaddhiye1 samādapeti; attanā ca ahiriko hoti, parañca ahirikatāya samādapeti; attanā ca anottappī hoti, parañca anottappe samādapeti; attanā ca appassuto hoti, parañca appassute samādapeti; attanā ca kusīto hoti, parañca kosajje samādapeti; attanā ca muṭṭhassati hoti, parañca muṭṭhassacce2 samādapeti; attanā ca duppañño hoti, parañca duppaññatāya samādapeti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, asappurisena asappurisataro.
And what is a worse person? It’s someone who is faithless, shameless, imprudent, with little learning, lazy, confused, and witless. And they encourage others in these same qualities. This is called a worse person.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, सप्पुरिसो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो सद्धो होति, हिरिमा होति, ओत्तप्पी होति, बहुस्सुतो होति, आरद्धवीरियो होति, सतिमा होति, पञ्ञवा होति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सप्पुरिसो।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sappuriso? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco saddho hoti, hirimā hoti, ottappī hoti, bahussuto hoti, āraddhavīriyo hoti, satimā hoti, paññavā hoti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sappuriso.
And what is a good person? It’s someone who is faithful, conscientious, prudent, learned, energetic, mindful, and wise. This is called a good person.
कतमो च, भिक्खवे, सप्पुरिसेन सप्पुरिसतरो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अत्तना च सद्धासम्पन्नो होति, परञ्च सद्धासम्पदाय समादपेति; अत्तना च हिरिमा होति, परञ्च हिरिमताय समादपेति; अत्तना च ओत्तप्पी होति, परञ्च ओत्तप्पे समादपेति; अत्तना च बहुस्सुतो होति, परञ्च बाहुसच्चे समादपेति; अत्तना च आरद्धवीरियो होति, परञ्च वीरियारम्भे समादपेति; अत्तना च उपट्ठितस्सति होति, परञ्च सतिउपट्ठाने समादपेति; अत्तना च पञ्ञासम्पन्नो होति, परञ्च पञ्ञासम्पदाय समादपेति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सप्पुरिसेन सप्पुरिसतरो”ति।
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sappurisena sappurisataro? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca saddhāsampanno hoti, parañca saddhāsampadāya samādapeti; attanā ca hirimā hoti, parañca hirimatāya3 samādapeti; attanā ca ottappī hoti, parañca ottappe samādapeti; attanā ca bahussuto hoti, parañca bāhusacce samādapeti; attanā ca āraddhavīriyo hoti, parañca vīriyārambhe samādapeti; attanā ca upaṭṭhitassati hoti, parañca satiupaṭṭhāne4 samādapeti; attanā ca paññāsampanno hoti, parañca paññāsampadāya samādapeti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sappurisena sappurisataro”ti.
And what is a better person? It’s someone who is personally accomplished in faith, conscience, prudence, learning, energy, mindfulness, and wisdom. And they encourage others in these same qualities. This is called a better person.”
