Faithless
“पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो थेरो भिक्खु सब्रह्मचारीनं अप्पियो च होति, अमनापो च अगरु च अभावनीयो च। कतमेहि पञ्चहि? अस्सद्धो होति, अहिरिको होति, अनोत्तप्पी होति, कुसीतो होति, दुप्पञ्ञो होति—इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो थेरो भिक्खु सब्रह्मचारीनं अप्पियो च होति अमनापो च अगरु च अभावनीयो च।
“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato thero bhikkhu sabrahmacārīnaṁ appiyo ca hoti, amanāpo ca agaru ca abhāvanīyo ca. Katamehi pañcahi? Assaddho hoti, ahiriko hoti, anottappī hoti, kusīto hoti, duppañño hoti—imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato thero bhikkhu sabrahmacārīnaṁ appiyo ca hoti amanāpo ca agaru ca abhāvanīyo ca.
“Bhikkhus, a senior bhikkhu with five qualities is unlikable and unlovable to their spiritual companions, not respected or admired. What five? They’re faithless, shameless, imprudent, lazy, and witless. A senior bhikkhu with these five qualities is unlikable and unlovable to their spiritual companions, not respected or admired.
पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो थेरो भिक्खु सब्रह्मचारीनं पियो च होति मनापो च गरु च भावनीयो च। कतमेहि पञ्चहि? सद्धो होति, हिरीमा होति, ओत्तप्पी होति, आरद्धवीरियो होति, पञ्ञवा होति—इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो थेरो भिक्खु सब्रह्मचारीनं पियो च होति मनापो च गरु च भावनीयो चा”ति।
Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato thero bhikkhu sabrahmacārīnaṁ piyo ca hoti manāpo ca garu ca bhāvanīyo ca. Katamehi pañcahi? Saddho hoti, hirīmā hoti, ottappī hoti, āraddhavīriyo hoti, paññavā hoti—imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato thero bhikkhu sabrahmacārīnaṁ piyo ca hoti manāpo ca garu ca bhāvanīyo cā”ti.
A senior bhikkhu with five qualities is dear and beloved to their spiritual companions, respected and admired. What five? They’re faithful, conscientious, prudent, energetic, and wise. A senior bhikkhu with these five qualities is dear and beloved to their spiritual companions, respected and admired.”
