    Assakhaḷuṅkasutta

    A Wild Colt

    “अट्ठ च, भिक्खवे, अस्सखळुङ्के देसेस्सामि अट्ठ च अस्सदोसे, अट्ठ च पुरिसखळुङ्के अट्ठ च पुरिसदोसे। तं सुणाथ, साधुकं मनसि करोथ, भासिस्सामी”ति।

    “Aṭṭha ca, bhikkhave, assakhaḷuṅke desessāmi aṭṭha ca assadose, aṭṭha ca purisakhaḷuṅke aṭṭha ca purisadose. Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, I will teach you about eight wild colts and eight defects in horses, and about eight wild people and eight defects in people. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

    “एवं, भन्ते”ति खो ते भिक्खू भगवतो पच्चस्सोसुं। भगवा एतदवोच:

    “Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ. Bhagavā etadavoca:

    “Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

    “कतमे च, भिक्खवे, अट्ठ अस्सखळुङ्का अट्ठ च अस्सदोसा?

    “Katame ca, bhikkhave, aṭṭha assakhaḷuṅkā aṭṭha ca assadosā?

    “And what, bhikkhus, are the eight wild colts and eight defects in horses?

    इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना पच्छतो पटिक्कमति, पिट्ठितो रथं पवत्तेति। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पठमो अस्सदोसो।

    Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā pacchato paṭikkamati, piṭṭhito rathaṁ pavatteti. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo assadoso.

    Firstly, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, some wild colts back right up and spin the chariot behind them. Some wild colts are like that. This is the first defect of a horse.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना पच्छा लङ्घति, कुब्बरं हनति, तिदण्डं भञ्जति। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, दुतियो अस्सदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā pacchā laṅghati, kubbaraṁ hanati, tidaṇḍaṁ bhañjati. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo assadoso.

    Furthermore, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, some wild colts jump back, wreck the hub, and break the triple rod. Some wild colts are like that. This is the second defect of a horse.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना रथीसाय सत्थिं उस्सज्जित्वा रथीसंयेव अज्झोमद्दति। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, ततियो अस्सदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā rathīsāya satthiṁ ussajjitvā rathīsaṁyeva ajjhomaddati. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyo assadoso.

    Furthermore, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, some wild colts shake the cart-pole off their thigh and trample it. Some wild colts are like that. This is the third defect of a horse.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना उम्मग्गं गण्हति, उब्बटुमं रथं करोति। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, चतुत्थो अस्सदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā ummaggaṁ gaṇhati, ubbaṭumaṁ rathaṁ karoti. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, catuttho assadoso.

    Furthermore, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, some wild colts take a wrong turn, sending the chariot off track. Some wild colts are like that. This is the fourth defect of a horse.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना लङ्घति पुरिमकायं पग्गण्हति पुरिमे पादे। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पञ्चमो अस्सदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā laṅghati purimakāyaṁ paggaṇhati purime pāde. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamo assadoso.

    Furthermore, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, some wild colts rear up and strike out with their fore-legs. Some wild colts are like that. This is the fifth defect of a horse.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना अनादियित्वा सारथिं अनादियित्वा पतोदलट्ठिं दन्तेहि मुखाधानं विधंसित्वा येन कामं पक्कमति। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, छट्ठो अस्सदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā anādiyitvā sārathiṁ anādiyitvā patodalaṭṭhiṁ1 dantehi mukhādhānaṁ2 vidhaṁsitvā yena kāmaṁ pakkamati. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, chaṭṭho assadoso.

    Furthermore, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, some wild colts ignore the trainer and the goad, spit out the bit, and go wherever they want. Some wild colts are like that. This is the sixth defect of a horse.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना नेव अभिक्कमति नो पटिक्कमति तत्थेव खीलट्ठायी ठितो होति। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, सत्तमो अस्सदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā neva abhikkamati no paṭikkamati tattheva khīlaṭṭhāyī ṭhito hoti. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, sattamo assadoso.

    Furthermore, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, some wild colts don’t step forward or turn back but stand right there still as a post. Some wild colts are like that. This is the seventh defect of a horse.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना पुरिमे च पादे संहरित्वा पच्छिमे च पादे संहरित्वा तत्थेव चत्तारो पादे अभिनिसीदति। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो अस्सखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, अट्ठमो अस्सदोसो। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, अट्ठ अस्सखळुङ्का अट्ठ च अस्सदोसा।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā purime ca pāde saṁharitvā3 pacchime ca pāde saṁharitvā tattheva cattāro pāde abhinisīdati. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco assakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, aṭṭhamo assadoso. Ime kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭha assakhaḷuṅkā aṭṭha ca assadosā.

    Furthermore, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, some wild colts tuck in their fore-legs and hind-legs, and sit right down on their four legs. Some wild colts are like that. This is the eighth defect of a horse. These are the eight wild colts and the eight defects in horses.

    कतमे च, भिक्खवे, अट्ठ पुरिसखळुङ्का अट्ठ च पुरिसदोसा?

    Katame ca, bhikkhave, aṭṭha purisakhaḷuṅkā aṭṭha ca purisadosā?

    And what are the eight wild people and eight defects in people?

    इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू भिक्खुं आपत्तिया चोदेन्ति। सो भिक्खु भिक्खूहि आपत्तिया चोदियमानो ‘न सरामीऽति असतिया निब्बेठेति। सेय्यथापि सो, भिक्खवे, अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना पच्छतो पटिक्कमति, पिट्ठितो रथं वत्तेति; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुरिसखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पठमो पुरिसदोसो।

    Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhū bhikkhuṁ āpattiyā codenti. So bhikkhu bhikkhūhi āpattiyā codiyamāno ‘na sarāmī’ti asatiyā nibbeṭheti. Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā pacchato paṭikkamati, piṭṭhito rathaṁ vatteti; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco purisakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paṭhamo purisadoso.

    Firstly, the bhikkhus accuse a bhikkhu of an offense. But the accused bhikkhu evades it by saying they don’t remember. I say that this person is comparable to the wild colts who, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, back right up and spin the chariot behind them. Some wild people are like that. This is the first defect of a person.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू भिक्खुं आपत्तिया चोदेन्ति। सो भिक्खु भिक्खूहि आपत्तिया चोदियमानो चोदकंयेव पटिप्फरति: ‘किं नु खो तुय्हं बालस्स अब्यत्तस्स भणितेन। त्वम्पि नाम भणितब्बं मञ्ञसीऽति। सेय्यथापि सो, भिक्खवे, अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना पच्छा लङ्घति, कुब्बरं हनति, तिदण्डं भञ्जति; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुरिसखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, दुतियो पुरिसदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhū bhikkhuṁ āpattiyā codenti. So bhikkhu bhikkhūhi āpattiyā codiyamāno codakaṁyeva paṭippharati: ‘kiṁ nu kho tuyhaṁ bālassa abyattassa bhaṇitena. Tvampi nāma bhaṇitabbaṁ maññasī’ti. Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā pacchā laṅghati, kubbaraṁ hanati, tidaṇḍaṁ bhañjati; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco purisakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo purisadoso.

    Furthermore, the bhikkhus accuse a bhikkhu of an offense. But the accused bhikkhu objects to the accuser: ‘What has an incompetent fool like you got to say? How on earth could you imagine you’ve got something worth saying!’ I say that this person is comparable to the wild colts who, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, jump back, wreck the hub, and break the triple rod. Some wild people are like that. This is the second defect of a person.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू भिक्खुं आपत्तिया चोदेन्ति। सो भिक्खु भिक्खूहि आपत्तिया चोदियमानो चोदकस्सेव पच्चारोपेति: ‘त्वं खोसि इत्थन्नामं आपत्तिं आपन्नो, त्वं ताव पठमं पटिकरोहीऽति। सेय्यथापि सो, भिक्खवे, अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना रथीसाय सत्थिं उस्सज्जित्वा रथीसंयेव अज्झोमद्दति; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुरिसखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, ततियो पुरिसदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhū bhikkhuṁ āpattiyā codenti. So bhikkhu bhikkhūhi āpattiyā codiyamāno codakasseva paccāropeti: ‘tvaṁ khosi itthannāmaṁ āpattiṁ āpanno, tvaṁ tāva paṭhamaṁ paṭikarohī’ti. Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā rathīsāya satthiṁ ussajjitvā rathīsaṁyeva ajjhomaddati; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco purisakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyo purisadoso.

    Furthermore, the bhikkhus accuse a bhikkhu of an offense. But the accused bhikkhu retorts to the accuser: ‘Well, you’ve fallen into such-and-such an offense. You should deal with that first.’ I say that this person is comparable to the wild colts who, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, shake the cart-pole off their thigh and trample it. Some wild people are like that. This is the third defect of a person.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू भिक्खुं आपत्तिया चोदेन्ति। सो भिक्खु भिक्खूहि आपत्तिया चोदियमानो अञ्ञेनाञ्ञं पटिचरति, बहिद्धा कथं अपनामेति, कोपञ्च दोसञ्च अप्पच्चयञ्च पातुकरोति। सेय्यथापि सो, भिक्खवे, अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना उम्मग्गं गण्हति, उब्बटुमं रथं करोति; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुरिसखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, चतुत्थो पुरिसदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhū bhikkhuṁ āpattiyā codenti. So bhikkhu bhikkhūhi āpattiyā codiyamāno aññenāññaṁ paṭicarati, bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmeti, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukaroti. Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā ummaggaṁ gaṇhati, ubbaṭumaṁ rathaṁ karoti; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco purisakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, catuttho purisadoso.

    Furthermore, the bhikkhus accuse a bhikkhu of an offense. But the accused bhikkhu dodges the issue, distracts the discussion with irrelevant points, and displays annoyance, hate, and bitterness. I say that this person is comparable to the wild colts who, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, take a wrong turn, sending the chariot off track. Some wild people are like that. This is the fourth defect of a person.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू भिक्खुं आपत्तिया चोदेन्ति। सो भिक्खु भिक्खूहि आपत्तिया चोदियमानो सङ्घमज्झे बाहुविक्खेपं करोति। सेय्यथापि सो, भिक्खवे, अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना लङ्घति, पुरिमकायं पग्गण्हति पुरिमे पादे; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुरिसखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, पञ्चमो पुरिसदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhū bhikkhuṁ āpattiyā codenti. So bhikkhu bhikkhūhi āpattiyā codiyamāno saṅghamajjhe bāhuvikkhepaṁ karoti. Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā laṅghati, purimakāyaṁ paggaṇhati purime pāde; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco purisakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, pañcamo purisadoso.

    Furthermore, the bhikkhus accuse a bhikkhu of an offense. But the accused bhikkhu gesticulates while speaking in the middle of the Saṅgha. I say that this person is comparable to the wild colts who, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, rear up and strike out with their fore-legs. Some wild people are like that. This is the fifth defect of a person.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू भिक्खुं आपत्तिया चोदेन्ति। सो भिक्खु भिक्खूहि आपत्तिया चोदियमानो अनादियित्वा सङ्घं अनादियित्वा चोदकं सापत्तिकोव येन कामं पक्कमति। सेय्यथापि सो, भिक्खवे, अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना अनादियित्वा सारथिं अनादियित्वा पतोदलट्ठिं दन्तेहि मुखाधानं विधंसित्वा येन कामं पक्कमति; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुरिसखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, छट्ठो पुरिसदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhū bhikkhuṁ āpattiyā codenti. So bhikkhu bhikkhūhi āpattiyā codiyamāno anādiyitvā saṅghaṁ anādiyitvā codakaṁ sāpattikova yena kāmaṁ pakkamati. Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā anādiyitvā sārathiṁ anādiyitvā patodalaṭṭhiṁ dantehi mukhādhānaṁ vidhaṁsitvā yena kāmaṁ pakkamati; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco purisakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, chaṭṭho purisadoso.

    Furthermore, the bhikkhus accuse a bhikkhu of an offense. But the accused bhikkhu ignores the Saṅgha and the accusation and, though still guilty of the offense, they go wherever they want. I say that this person is comparable to the wild colts who, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, ignore the trainer and the goad, spit out the bit, and go wherever they want. Some wild people are like that. This is the sixth defect of a person.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू भिक्खुं आपत्तिया चोदेन्ति। सो भिक्खु भिक्खूहि आपत्तिया चोदियमानो ‘नेवाहं आपन्नोम्हि, न पनाहं आपन्नोम्हीऽति सो तुण्हीभावेन सङ्घं विहेठेति। सेय्यथापि सो, भिक्खवे, अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना नेव अभिक्कमति नो पटिक्कमति तत्थेव खीलट्ठायी ठितो होति; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुरिसखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, सत्तमो पुरिसदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhū bhikkhuṁ āpattiyā codenti. So bhikkhu bhikkhūhi āpattiyā codiyamāno ‘nevāhaṁ āpannomhi, na panāhaṁ āpannomhī’ti so tuṇhībhāvena saṅghaṁ viheṭheti. Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā neva abhikkamati no paṭikkamati tattheva khīlaṭṭhāyī ṭhito hoti; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco purisakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, sattamo purisadoso.

    Furthermore, the bhikkhus accuse a bhikkhu of an offense. But the accused bhikkhu neither confesses to the offense nor denies it, but frustrates the Saṅgha by staying silent. I say that this person is comparable to the wild colts who, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, don’t step forward or turn back but stand right there still as a post. Some wild people are like that. This is the seventh defect of a person.

    पुन चपरं, भिक्खवे, भिक्खू भिक्खुं आपत्तिया चोदेन्ति। सो भिक्खु भिक्खूहि आपत्तिया चोदियमानो एवमाह: ‘किं नु खो तुम्हे आयस्मन्तो अतिबाळ्हं मयि ब्यावटा याव इदानाहं सिक्खं पच्चक्खाय हीनायावत्तिस्सामीऽति। सो सिक्खं पच्चक्खाय हीनायावत्तित्वा एवमाह: ‘इदानि खो तुम्हे आयस्मन्तो अत्तमना होथाऽति? सेय्यथापि सो, भिक्खवे, अस्सखळुङ्को ‘पेहीऽति वुत्तो, विद्धो समानो चोदितो सारथिना पुरिमे च पादे संहरित्वा पच्छिमे च पादे संहरित्वा तत्थेव चत्तारो पादे अभिनिसीदति; तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि। एवरूपोपि, भिक्खवे, इधेकच्चो पुरिसखळुङ्को होति। अयं, भिक्खवे, अट्ठमो पुरिसदोसो।

    Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, bhikkhū bhikkhuṁ āpattiyā codenti. So bhikkhu bhikkhūhi āpattiyā codiyamāno evamāha: ‘kiṁ nu kho tumhe āyasmanto atibāḷhaṁ mayi byāvaṭā yāva4 idānāhaṁ sikkhaṁ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvattissāmī’ti. So sikkhaṁ paccakkhāya hīnāyāvattitvā evamāha: ‘idāni kho tumhe āyasmanto attamanā hothā’ti? Seyyathāpi so, bhikkhave, assakhaḷuṅko ‘pehī’ti vutto, viddho samāno codito sārathinā purime ca pāde saṁharitvā pacchime ca pāde saṁharitvā tattheva cattāro pāde abhinisīdati; tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi. Evarūpopi, bhikkhave, idhekacco purisakhaḷuṅko hoti. Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, aṭṭhamo purisadoso.

    Furthermore, the bhikkhus accuse a bhikkhu of an offense. But the accused bhikkhu says this: ‘Why are you venerables making so much of an issue over me? Now I’ll resign the training and return to a lesser life.’ When they have resigned the training, they say: ‘Well, venerables, are you happy now?’ I say that this person is comparable to the wild colts who, when the trainer says ‘giddyup!’ and spurs and goads them on, tuck in their fore-legs and hind-legs, and sit right down on their four legs. Some wild people are like that. This is the eighth defect of a person.

    इमे खो, भिक्खवे, अट्ठ पुरिसखळुङ्का अट्ठ च पुरिसदोसा”ति।

    Ime kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭha purisakhaḷuṅkā aṭṭha ca purisadosā”ti.

    These are the eight wild people and eight defects in people.”
