    Attakārīsutta

    One’s Own Volition

    अथ खो अञ्ञतरो ब्राह्मणो येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा भगवता सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो सो ब्राह्मणो भगवन्तं एतदवोच:

    Atha kho aññataro brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

    Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:

    “अहञ्हि, भो गोतम, एवंवादी एवंदिट्ठि: ‘नत्थि अत्तकारो, नत्थि परकारोऽ”ति।

    “ahañhi, bho gotama, evaṁvādī evaṁdiṭṭhi: ‘natthi attakāro, natthi parakāro’”ti.

    “Master Gotama, this is my doctrine and view: One does not act of one’s own volition, nor does one act of another’s volition.”

    “माहं, ब्राह्मण, एवंवादिं एवंदिट्ठिं अद्दसं वा अस्सोसिं वा। कथञ्हि नाम सयं अभिक्कमन्तो, सयं पटिक्कमन्तो एवं वक्खति: ‘नत्थि अत्तकारो, नत्थि परकारोऽति।

    “Māhaṁ, brāhmaṇa, evaṁvādiṁ evaṁdiṭṭhiṁ addasaṁ vā assosiṁ vā. Kathañhi nāma sayaṁ abhikkamanto, sayaṁ paṭikkamanto evaṁ vakkhati: ‘natthi attakāro, natthi parakāro’ti.

    “Brahmin, may I never see or hear of anyone holding such a doctrine or view! How on earth can someone who comes and goes on his own say that one does not act of one’s own volition, nor does one act of another’s volition?

    तं किं मञ्ञसि, ब्राह्मण, अत्थि आरब्भधातू”ति?

    Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, brāhmaṇa, atthi ārabbhadhātū”ti?

    What do you think, brahmin, is there an element of initiative?”

    “एवं, भो”।

    “Evaṁ, bho”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “आरब्भधातुया सति आरब्भवन्तो सत्ता पञ्ञायन्ती”ति?

    “Ārabbhadhātuyā sati ārabbhavanto sattā paññāyantī”ti?

    “Since this is so, do we find sentient beings who initiate activity?”

    “एवं, भो”।

    “Evaṁ, bho”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “यं खो, ब्राह्मण, आरब्भधातुया सति आरब्भवन्तो सत्ता पञ्ञायन्ति, अयं सत्तानं अत्तकारो अयं परकारो।

    “Yaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, ārabbhadhātuyā sati ārabbhavanto sattā paññāyanti, ayaṁ sattānaṁ attakāro ayaṁ parakāro.

    “Since there is an element of initiative, and sentient beings who initiate activity are found, sentient beings act of their own volition or that of another.

    तं किं मञ्ञसि, ब्राह्मण, अत्थि निक्कमधातु …पे… अत्थि परक्कमधातु … अत्थि थामधातु … अत्थि ठितिधातु … अत्थि उपक्कमधातू”ति?

    Taṁ kiṁ maññasi, brāhmaṇa, atthi nikkamadhātu …pe… atthi parakkamadhātu … atthi thāmadhātu … atthi ṭhitidhātu … atthi upakkamadhātū”ti?

    What do you think, brahmin, is there an element of persistence … exertion … strength … endurance … energy?”

    “एवं, भो”।

    “Evaṁ, bho”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “उपक्कमधातुया सति उपक्कमवन्तो सत्ता पञ्ञायन्ती”ति?

    “Upakkamadhātuyā sati upakkamavanto sattā paññāyantī”ti?

    “Since this is so, do we find sentient beings who have energy?”

    “एवं, भो”।

    “Evaṁ, bho”.

    “Yes, sir.”

    “यं खो, ब्राह्मण, उपक्कमधातुया सति उपक्कमवन्तो सत्ता पञ्ञायन्ति, अयं सत्तानं अत्तकारो अयं परकारो।

    “Yaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, upakkamadhātuyā sati upakkamavanto sattā paññāyanti, ayaṁ sattānaṁ attakāro ayaṁ parakāro.

    “Since there is an element of energy, and sentient beings who have energy are found, sentient beings act of their own volition or that of another.

    माहं, ब्राह्मण, एवंवादिं एवंदिट्ठिं अद्दसं वा अस्सोसिं वा। कथञ्हि नाम सयं अभिक्कमन्तो सयं पटिक्कमन्तो एवं वक्खति: ‘नत्थि अत्तकारो नत्थि परकारोऽ”ति।

    “अभिक्कन्तं, भो गोतम …पे… अज्जतग्गे पाणुपेतं सरणं गतन्”ति।

    “Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe… ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

    “Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”

    अट्ठमं।
