Avajānātisutta
Scorn
“पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे पञ्च? दत्वा अवजानाति, संवासेन अवजानाति, आधेय्यमुखो होति, लोलो होति, मन्दो मोमूहो होति।
“Pañcime, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame pañca? Datvā avajānāti, saṁvāsena avajānāti, ādheyyamukho hoti, lolo hoti, mando momūho hoti.
“Bhikkhus, these five people are found in the world. What five? One gives then scorns, one lives together then scorns, one is gullible for gossip, one is impulsive, and one is dull and stupid.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो दत्वा अवजानाति? इध, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो पुग्गलस्स देति चीवरपिण्डपातसेनासनगिलानप्पच्चयभेसज्जपरिक्खारं। तस्स एवं होति: ‘अहं देमि; अयं पटिग्गण्हातीऽति। तमेनं दत्वा अवजानाति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो दत्वा अवजानाति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo datvā avajānāti? Idha, bhikkhave, puggalo puggalassa deti cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhāraṁ. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘ahaṁ demi; ayaṁ paṭiggaṇhātī’ti. Tamenaṁ datvā avajānāti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo datvā avajānāti.
And how does a person give then scorn? It’s when a person gives someone robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. They think: ‘I give; this one receives.’ They give to that person, then they scorn them. That’s how a person gives then scorns.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो संवासेन अवजानाति? इध, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो पुग्गलेन सद्धिं संवसति द्वे वा तीणि वा वस्सानि। तमेनं संवासेन अवजानाति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो संवासेन अवजानाति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo saṁvāsena avajānāti? Idha, bhikkhave, puggalo puggalena saddhiṁ saṁvasati dve vā tīṇi vā vassāni. Tamenaṁ saṁvāsena avajānāti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo saṁvāsena avajānāti.
And how does a person live together then scorn? It’s when a person lives with someone else for two or three years. They live together with that person, then they scorn them. That’s how a person live together then scorns.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो आधेय्यमुखो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो परस्स वण्णे वा अवण्णे वा भासियमाने तं खिप्पञ्ञेव अधिमुच्चिता होति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो आधेय्यमुखो होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo ādheyyamukho hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo parassa vaṇṇe vā avaṇṇe vā bhāsiyamāne taṁ khippaññeva adhimuccitā1 hoti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo ādheyyamukho hoti.
And how is a person gullible for gossip? It’s when they’re very quick to believe what a certain person says in praise or criticism of another. That’s how a person is gullible for gossip.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो लोलो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो इत्तरसद्धो होति इत्तरभत्ती इत्तरपेमो इत्तरप्पसादो। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो लोलो होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo lolo hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ittarasaddho hoti ittarabhattī ittarapemo ittarappasādo. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo lolo hoti.
And how is a person impulsive? It’s when a certain person is fickle in faith, devotion, fondness, and confidence. That’s how a person is impulsive.
कथञ्च, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो मन्दो मोमूहो होति? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पुग्गलो कुसलाकुसले धम्मे न जानाति, सावज्जानवज्जे धम्मे न जानाति, हीनप्पणीते धम्मे न जानाति, कण्हसुक्कसप्पटिभागे धम्मे न जानाति। एवं खो, भिक्खवे, पुग्गलो मन्दो मोमूहो होति।
Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo mando momūho hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo kusalākusale dhamme na jānāti, sāvajjānavajje dhamme na jānāti, hīnappaṇīte dhamme na jānāti, kaṇhasukkasappaṭibhāge dhamme na jānāti. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo mando momūho hoti.
And how is a person dull and stupid? It’s when they don’t know the difference between qualities that are skillful and unskillful, blameworthy and blameless, inferior and superior, and those on the side of dark and bright. That’s how a person is dull and stupid.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिन्”ति।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.
These are the five people found in the world.”
