Focus, the Exterior, and the End of Relishing
“रूपे, भिक्खवे, योनिसो मनसि करोथ, रूपानिच्चतञ्च यथाभूतं समनुपस्सथ। रूपे, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु योनिसो मनसिकरोन्तो, रूपानिच्चतञ्च यथाभूतं समनुपस्सन्तो रूपेसुपि निब्बिन्दति। नन्दिक्खया रागक्खयो; रागक्खया नन्दिक्खयो। नन्दिरागक्खया चित्तं सुविमुत्तन्ति वुच्चति।
“Rūpe, bhikkhave, yoniso manasi karotha, rūpāniccatañca yathābhūtaṁ samanupassatha. Rūpe, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yoniso manasikaronto, rūpāniccatañca yathābhūtaṁ samanupassanto rūpesupi nibbindati. Nandikkhayā rāgakkhayo; rāgakkhayā nandikkhayo. Nandirāgakkhayā cittaṁ suvimuttanti vuccati.
“Bhikkhus, rationally apply the mind to sights. Truly see the impermanence of sights. When a bhikkhu does this, they grow disillusioned with sights. When relishing ends, greed ends. When greed ends, relishing ends. When relishing and greed end, the mind is said to be well freed.
सद्दे … गन्धे … रसे … फोट्ठब्बे … धम्मे, भिक्खवे, योनिसो मनसि करोथ, धम्मानिच्चतञ्च यथाभूतं समनुपस्सथ। धम्मे, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु योनिसो मनसिकरोन्तो, धम्मानिच्चतञ्च यथाभूतं समनुपस्सन्तो धम्मेसुपि निब्बिन्दति। नन्दिक्खया रागक्खयो; रागक्खया नन्दिक्खयो। नन्दिरागक्खया चित्तं सुविमुत्तन्ति वुच्चती”ति।
Sadde … gandhe … rase … phoṭṭhabbe … dhamme, bhikkhave, yoniso manasi karotha, dhammāniccatañca yathābhūtaṁ samanupassatha. Dhamme, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yoniso manasikaronto, dhammāniccatañca yathābhūtaṁ samanupassanto dhammesupi nibbindati. Nandikkhayā rāgakkhayo; rāgakkhayā nandikkhayo. Nandirāgakkhayā cittaṁ suvimuttanti vuccatī”ti.
Rationally apply the mind to sounds … smells … tastes … touches … thoughts. Truly see the impermanence of thoughts. When a bhikkhu does this, they grow disillusioned with thoughts. When relishing ends, greed ends. When greed ends, relishing ends. When relishing and greed end, the mind is said to be well freed.”
