“पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो आवासिको भिक्खु आवासस्स बहूपकारो होति। कतमेहि पञ्चहि?
“Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu āvāsassa bahūpakāro hoti. Katamehi pañcahi?
“Bhikkhus, a resident bhikkhu with five qualities is very helpful to the monastery. What five?
सीलवा होति …पे… समादाय सिक्खति सिक्खापदेसु;
Sīlavā hoti …pe… samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu;
They’re ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.
बहुस्सुतो होति …पे… दिट्ठिया सुप्पटिविद्धा;
bahussuto hoti …pe… diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā;
They’re very learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
खण्डफुल्लं पटिसङ्खरोति;
khaṇḍaphullaṁ paṭisaṅkharoti;
They repair what is decayed and damaged.
महा खो पन भिक्खुसङ्घो अभिक्कन्तो नानावेरज्जका भिक्खू गिहीनं उपसङ्कमित्वा आरोचेति:
mahā kho pana bhikkhusaṅgho abhikkanto nānāverajjakā bhikkhū gihīnaṁ upasaṅkamitvā āroceti:
When a large bhikkhu Saṅgha is arriving with bhikkhus from abroad, they go to the lay people and announce:
‘महा खो, आवुसो, भिक्खुसङ्घो अभिक्कन्तो नानावेरज्जका भिक्खू, करोथ पुञ्ञानि, समयो पुञ्ञानि कातुन्ऽति;
‘mahā kho, āvuso, bhikkhusaṅgho abhikkanto nānāverajjakā bhikkhū, karotha puññāni, samayo puññāni kātun’ti;
‘A large bhikkhu Saṅgha is arriving with bhikkhus from abroad. Make merit! Now is the time to make merit!’
चतुन्नं झानानं आभिचेतसिकानं दिट्ठधम्मसुखविहारानं निकामलाभी होति अकिच्छलाभी अकसिरलाभी।
catunnaṁ jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diṭṭhadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhī hoti akicchalābhī akasiralābhī.
They get the four jhānas—blissful meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.
इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो आवासिको भिक्खु आवासस्स बहूपकारो होती”ति।
Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato āvāsiko bhikkhu āvāsassa bahūpakāro hotī”ti.
A resident bhikkhu with these five qualities is very helpful to the monastery.”
