    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, बाला। कतमे द्वे? यो च अच्चयं अच्चयतो न पस्सति, यो च अच्चयं देसेन्तस्स यथाधम्मं नप्पटिग्गण्हाति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे बालाति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, bālā. Katame dve? Yo ca accayaṁ accayato na passati, yo ca accayaṁ desentassa yathādhammaṁ nappaṭiggaṇhāti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve bālāti.

    “Bhikkhus, there are two fools. What two? One who doesn’t recognize when they’ve made a mistake. And one who doesn’t properly accept the confession of someone who’s made a mistake. These are the two fools.

    द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, पण्डिता। कतमे द्वे? यो च अच्चयं अच्चयतो पस्सति, यो च अच्चयं देसेन्तस्स यथाधम्मं पटिग्गण्हाति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पण्डिता”ति।

    Dveme, bhikkhave, paṇḍitā. Katame dve? Yo ca accayaṁ accayato passati, yo ca accayaṁ desentassa yathādhammaṁ paṭiggaṇhāti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paṇḍitā”ti.

    There are two who are astute. What two? One who recognizes when they’ve made a mistake. And one who properly accepts the confession of someone who’s made a mistake. These are the two who are astute.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, तथागतं अब्भाचिक्खन्ति। कतमे द्वे? दुट्ठो वा दोसन्तरो, सद्धो वा दुग्गहितेन। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे तथागतं अब्भाचिक्खन्ती”ति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, tathāgataṁ abbhācikkhanti. Katame dve? Duṭṭho vā dosantaro, saddho vā duggahitena. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve tathāgataṁ abbhācikkhantī”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, these two misrepresent the Realized One. What two? One who is hateful and hides it, and one whose faith is mistaken. These two misrepresent the Realized One.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, तथागतं अब्भाचिक्खन्ति। कतमे द्वे? यो च अभासितं अलपितं तथागतेन भासितं लपितं तथागतेनाति दीपेति, यो च भासितं लपितं तथागतेन अभासितं अलपितं तथागतेनाति दीपेति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे तथागतं अब्भाचिक्खन्तीति।

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, tathāgataṁ abbhācikkhanti. Katame dve? Yo ca abhāsitaṁ alapitaṁ tathāgatena bhāsitaṁ lapitaṁ tathāgatenāti dīpeti, yo ca bhāsitaṁ lapitaṁ tathāgatena abhāsitaṁ alapitaṁ tathāgatenāti dīpeti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve tathāgataṁ abbhācikkhantīti.

    “Bhikkhus, these two misrepresent the Realized One. What two? One who explains what was not spoken by the Realized One as spoken by him. And one who explains what was spoken by the Realized One as not spoken by him. These two misrepresent the Realized One.

    द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, तथागतं नाब्भाचिक्खन्ति। कतमे द्वे? यो च अभासितं अलपितं तथागतेन अभासितं अलपितं तथागतेनाति दीपेति, यो च भासितं लपितं तथागतेन भासितं लपितं तथागतेनाति दीपेति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे तथागतं नाब्भाचिक्खन्ती”ति।

    Dveme, bhikkhave, tathāgataṁ nābbhācikkhanti. Katame dve? Yo ca abhāsitaṁ alapitaṁ tathāgatena abhāsitaṁ alapitaṁ tathāgatenāti dīpeti, yo ca bhāsitaṁ lapitaṁ tathāgatena bhāsitaṁ lapitaṁ tathāgatenāti dīpeti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve tathāgataṁ nābbhācikkhantī”ti.

    These two don’t misrepresent the Realized One. What two? One who explains what was not spoken by the Realized One as not spoken by him. And one who explains what was spoken by the Realized One as spoken by him. These two don’t misrepresent the Realized One.”

    “Dveme, bhikkhave, tathāgataṁ abbhācikkhanti. Katame dve? Yo ca neyyatthaṁ suttantaṁ nītattho suttantoti dīpeti, yo ca nītatthaṁ suttantaṁ neyyattho suttantoti dīpeti. Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve tathāgataṁ abbhācikkhantī”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, these two misrepresent the Realized One. What two? One who explains a discourse in need of interpretation as a discourse whose meaning is explicit. And one who explains a discourse whose meaning is explicit as a discourse in need of interpretation. These two misrepresent the Realized One.”

    “द्वेमे, भिक्खवे, तथागतं नाब्भाचिक्खन्ति। कतमे द्वे? यो च नेय्यत्थं सुत्तन्तं नेय्यत्थो सुत्तन्तोति दीपेति, यो च नीतत्थं सुत्तन्तं नीतत्थो सुत्तन्तोति दीपेति। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, द्वे तथागतं नाब्भाचिक्खन्ती”ति।

    “पटिच्छन्नकम्मन्तस्स, भिक्खवे, द्विन्नं गतीनं अञ्ञतरा गति पाटिकङ्खा—निरयो वा तिरच्छानयोनि वाति।

    “Paṭicchannakammantassa, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ gatīnaṁ aññatarā gati pāṭikaṅkhā—nirayo vā tiracchānayoni vāti.

    “Bhikkhus, when you hide your misdeeds, you can expect one of two destinies: hell or the animal realm.

    अप्पटिच्छन्नकम्मन्तस्स, भिक्खवे, द्विन्नं गतीनं अञ्ञतरा गति पाटिकङ्खा—देवा वा मनुस्सा वा”ति।

    Appaṭicchannakammantassa, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ gatīnaṁ aññatarā gati pāṭikaṅkhā—devā vā manussā vā”ti.

    When you don’t hide your misdeeds, you can expect one of two destinies: as a god or a human.”

    “मिच्छादिट्ठिकस्स, भिक्खवे, द्विन्नं गतीनं अञ्ञतरा गति पाटिकङ्खा—निरयो वा तिरच्छानयोनि वा”ति।

    “Micchādiṭṭhikassa, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ gatīnaṁ aññatarā gati pāṭikaṅkhā—nirayo vā tiracchānayoni vā”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, when you have wrong view, you can expect one of two destinies: hell or the animal realm.”

    “सम्मादिट्ठिकस्स, भिक्खवे, द्विन्नं गतीनं अञ्ञतरा गति पाटिकङ्खा—देवा वा मनुस्सा वा”ति।

    “Sammādiṭṭhikassa, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ gatīnaṁ aññatarā gati pāṭikaṅkhā—devā vā manussā vā”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, when you have right view, you can expect one of two destinies: as a god or a human.”

    “दुस्सीलस्स, भिक्खवे, द्वे पटिग्गाहा—निरयो वा तिरच्छानयोनि वा।

    “Dussīlassa, bhikkhave, dve paṭiggāhā—nirayo vā tiracchānayoni vā.

    “There are two places waiting to receive an unethical person: hell and the animal realm.

    सीलवतो, भिक्खवे, द्वे पटिग्गाहा—देवा वा मनुस्सा वा”ति।

    Sīlavato, bhikkhave, dve paṭiggāhā—devā vā manussā vā”ti.

    There are two places waiting to receive an ethical person: the realms of gods and humans.”

    “द्वाहं, भिक्खवे, अत्थवसे सम्पस्समानो अरञ्ञवनपत्थानि पन्तानि सेनासनानि पटिसेवामि। कतमे द्वे? अत्तनो च दिट्ठधम्मसुखविहारं सम्पस्समानो, पच्छिमञ्च जनतं अनुकम्पमानो। इमे खो अहं, भिक्खवे, द्वे अत्थवसे सम्पस्समानो अरञ्ञवनपत्थानि पन्तानि सेनासनानि पटिसेवामी”ति।

    “Dvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, atthavase sampassamāno araññavanapatthāni1 pantāni senāsanāni paṭisevāmi. Katame dve? Attano ca diṭṭhadhammasukhavihāraṁ sampassamāno, pacchimañca janataṁ anukampamāno. Ime kho ahaṁ, bhikkhave, dve atthavase sampassamāno araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni paṭisevāmī”ti.

    “Bhikkhus, I see two reasons to frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest. What two? Seeing a happy life for oneself in the present, and having compassion for future generations. I see two reasons to frequent remote lodgings in the wilderness and the forest.”

    “द्वे मे, भिक्खवे, धम्मा विज्जाभागिया। कतमे द्वे? समथो च विपस्सना च।

    “Dve me, bhikkhave, dhammā vijjābhāgiyā. Katame dve? Samatho ca vipassanā ca.

    “These two things play a part in realization. What two? Serenity and discernment.

    समथो, भिक्खवे, भावितो कमत्थमनुभोति? चित्तं भावीयति। चित्तं भावितं कमत्थमनुभोति? यो रागो सो पहीयति।

    Samatho, bhikkhave, bhāvito kamatthamanubhoti? Cittaṁ bhāvīyati. Cittaṁ bhāvitaṁ kamatthamanubhoti? Yo rāgo so pahīyati.

    What is the benefit of developing serenity? The mind is developed. What is the benefit of developing the mind? Greed is given up.

    विपस्सना, भिक्खवे, भाविता कमत्थमनुभोति? पञ्ञा भावीयति। पञ्ञा भाविता कमत्थमनुभोति? या अविज्जा सा पहीयति।

    Vipassanā, bhikkhave, bhāvitā kamatthamanubhoti? Paññā bhāvīyati. Paññā bhāvitā kamatthamanubhoti? Yā avijjā sā pahīyati.

    What is the benefit of developing discernment? Wisdom is developed. What is the benefit of developing wisdom? Ignorance is given up.

    रागुपक्किलिट्ठं वा, भिक्खवे, चित्तं न विमुच्चति, अविज्जुपक्किलिट्ठा वा पञ्ञा न भावीयति। इति खो, भिक्खवे, रागविरागा चेतोविमुत्ति, अविज्जाविरागा पञ्ञाविमुत्ती”ति।

    Rāgupakkiliṭṭhaṁ vā, bhikkhave, cittaṁ na vimuccati, avijjupakkiliṭṭhā vā paññā na bhāvīyati. Iti kho, bhikkhave, rāgavirāgā cetovimutti, avijjāvirāgā paññāvimuttī”ti.

    The mind contaminated by greed is not free; and wisdom contaminated by ignorance does not grow. In this way, freedom of heart comes from the fading away of greed, while freedom by wisdom comes from the fading away of ignorance.”

    बालवग्गो ततियो।
