    Benthic Foraminifera

Single-celled animals that live near the sediment water interface and have calcium carbonate skeletons. The skeletons of benthic foraminifers are often preserved in ocean sediments, providing a rich fossil record of the environmental conditions of the lake. (NOAA Paleoclimate Glossary)
