With Bhaddaji
एकं समयं आयस्मा आनन्दो कोसम्बियं विहरति घोसितारामे। अथ खो आयस्मा भद्दजि येनायस्मा आनन्दो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मता आनन्देन सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नं खो आयस्मन्तं भद्दजिं आयस्मा आनन्दो एतदवोच:
Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā ānando kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme. Atha kho āyasmā bhaddaji yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā ānandena saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ bhaddajiṁ āyasmā ānando etadavoca:
At one time Venerable Ānanda was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery. Then Venerable Bhaddaji went up to Venerable Ānanda, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and Venerable Ānanda said to him:
“किं नु खो, आवुसो भद्दजि, दस्सनानं अग्गं, किं सवनानं अग्गं, किं सुखानं अग्गं, किं सञ्ञानं अग्गं, किं भवानं अग्गन्”ति?
“kiṁ nu kho, āvuso bhaddaji, dassanānaṁ aggaṁ, kiṁ savanānaṁ aggaṁ, kiṁ sukhānaṁ aggaṁ, kiṁ saññānaṁ aggaṁ, kiṁ bhavānaṁ aggan”ti?
“Friend Bhaddaji, what is the best sight, the best sound, the best happiness, the best perception, and the best state of existence?”
“अत्थावुसो, ब्रह्मा अभिभू अनभिभूतो अञ्ञदत्थुदसो वसवत्ती, यो तं ब्रह्मानं पस्सति, इदं दस्सनानं अग्गं। अत्थावुसो, आभस्सरा नाम देवा सुखेन अभिसन्ना परिसन्ना। ते कदाचि करहचि उदानं उदानेन्ति: ‘अहो सुखं, अहो सुखन्ऽति। यो तं सद्दं सुणाति, इदं सवनानं अग्गं। अत्थावुसो, सुभकिण्हा नाम देवा। ते सन्तंयेव तुसिता सुखं पटिवेदेन्ति, इदं सुखानं अग्गं। अत्थावुसो, आकिञ्चञ्ञायतनूपगा देवा, इदं सञ्ञानं अग्गं। अत्थावुसो, नेवसञ्ञानासञ्ञायतनूपगा देवा, इदं भवानं अग्गन्”ति।
“Atthāvuso, brahmā abhibhū anabhibhūto aññadatthudaso vasavattī, yo taṁ brahmānaṁ passati, idaṁ dassanānaṁ aggaṁ. Atthāvuso, ābhassarā nāma devā sukhena abhisannā parisannā. Te kadāci karahaci udānaṁ udānenti: ‘aho sukhaṁ, aho sukhan’ti. Yo taṁ saddaṁ suṇāti, idaṁ savanānaṁ aggaṁ. Atthāvuso, subhakiṇhā nāma devā. Te santaṁyeva tusitā sukhaṁ paṭivedenti, idaṁ sukhānaṁ aggaṁ. Atthāvuso, ākiñcaññāyatanūpagā devā, idaṁ saññānaṁ aggaṁ. Atthāvuso, nevasaññānāsaññāyatanūpagā devā, idaṁ bhavānaṁ aggan”ti.
“Friend, there is this Brahmā, the vanquisher, the unvanquished, the universal seer, the wielder of power. When you see Brahmā, that’s the best sight. There are the gods called ‘of streaming radiance’, who are drenched and steeped in pleasure. Every so often they feel inspired to exclaim: ‘Oh, what bliss! Oh, what bliss!’ When you hear that, it’s the best sound. There are the gods called ‘replete with glory’. Since they’re truly content, they experience pleasure. This is the best happiness. There are the gods reborn in the dimension of nothingness. This is the best perception. There are the gods reborn in the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception. This is the best state of existence.”
“समेति खो इदं आयस्मतो भद्दजिस्स, यदिदं बहुना जनेना”ति?
“Sameti kho idaṁ āyasmato bhaddajissa, yadidaṁ bahunā janenā”ti?
“So, Venerable Bhaddaji, do you agree with what most people say about this?”
“आयस्मा खो आनन्दो बहुस्सुतो। पटिभातु आयस्मन्तंयेव आनन्दन्”ति।
“Āyasmā kho ānando bahussuto. Paṭibhātu āyasmantaṁyeva ānandan”ti.
“Well, Venerable Ānanda, you’re very learned. Why don’t you clarify this yourself?”
“तेनहावुसो भद्दजि, सुणाहि, साधुकं मनसि करोहि; भासिस्सामी”ति।
“Tenahāvuso bhaddaji, suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.
“Well then, Friend Bhaddaji, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
“एवमावुसो”ति खो आयस्मा भद्दजि आयस्मतो आनन्दस्स पच्चस्सोसि। आयस्मा आनन्दो एतदवोच:
“Evamāvuso”ti kho āyasmā bhaddaji āyasmato ānandassa paccassosi. Āyasmā ānando etadavoca:
“Yes, friend,” Bhaddaji replied. Ānanda said this:
“यथा पस्सतो खो, आवुसो, अनन्तरा आसवानं खयो होति, इदं दस्सनानं अग्गं। यथा सुणतो अनन्तरा आसवानं खयो होति, इदं सवनानं अग्गं। यथा सुखितस्स अनन्तरा आसवानं खयो होति, इदं सुखानं अग्गं। यथा सञ्ञिस्स अनन्तरा आसवानं खयो होति, इदं सञ्ञानं अग्गं। यथा भूतस्स अनन्तरा आसवानं खयो होति, इदं भवानं अग्गन्”ति।
“Yathā passato kho, āvuso, anantarā āsavānaṁ khayo hoti, idaṁ dassanānaṁ aggaṁ. Yathā suṇato anantarā āsavānaṁ khayo hoti, idaṁ savanānaṁ aggaṁ. Yathā sukhitassa anantarā āsavānaṁ khayo hoti, idaṁ sukhānaṁ aggaṁ. Yathā saññissa anantarā āsavānaṁ khayo hoti, idaṁ saññānaṁ aggaṁ. Yathā bhūtassa anantarā āsavānaṁ khayo hoti, idaṁ bhavānaṁ aggan”ti.
“What you see when the defilements end in the present life is the best sight. What you hear when the defilements end in the present life is the best sound. The happiness you feel when the defilements end in the present life is the best happiness. What you perceive when the defilements end in the present life is the best perception. The state of existence in which the defilements end in the present life is the best state of existence.”

तस्सुद्दानं
Tassuddānaṁ
द्वे आघातविनया, साकच्छा साजीवतो पञ्हं; पुच्छा निरोधो चोदना, सीलं निसन्ति भद्दजीति।
Dve āghātavinayā, sākacchā sājīvato pañhaṁ; Pucchā nirodho codanā, sīlaṁ nisanti bhaddajīti.
