    Eating Food

    “पञ्चहि, भिक्खवे, अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो रञ्ञो नागो भत्तादको च होति ओकासफरणो च लण्डसारणो च सलाकग्गाही च रञ्ञो नागोत्वेव सङ्खं गच्छति। कतमेहि पञ्चहि? इध, भिक्खवे, रञ्ञो नागो अक्खमो होति रूपानं, अक्खमो सद्दानं, अक्खमो गन्धानं, अक्खमो रसानं, अक्खमो फोट्ठब्बानं। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि अङ्गेहि समन्नागतो रञ्ञो नागो भत्तादको च ओकासफरणो च लण्डसारणो च सलाकग्गाही च, रञ्ञो नागोत्वेव सङ्खं गच्छति।

    “Pañcahi, bhikkhave, aṅgehi samannāgato rañño nāgo bhattādako ca hoti okāsapharaṇo ca laṇḍasāraṇo ca salākaggāhī ca rañño nāgotveva saṅkhaṁ gacchati. Katamehi pañcahi? Idha, bhikkhave, rañño nāgo akkhamo hoti rūpānaṁ, akkhamo saddānaṁ, akkhamo gandhānaṁ, akkhamo rasānaṁ, akkhamo phoṭṭhabbānaṁ. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi aṅgehi samannāgato rañño nāgo bhattādako ca okāsapharaṇo ca laṇḍasāraṇo ca salākaggāhī ca, rañño nāgotveva saṅkhaṁ gacchati.

    “Bhikkhus, a royal bull elephant with five factors eats food, takes up space, drops dung, and takes a ticket, yet is still considered to be a royal bull elephant. What five? It’s when a royal bull elephant can’t endure sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches. A royal bull elephant with these five factors eats food, takes up space, drops dung, and takes a ticket, yet is still considered to be a royal bull elephant.

    एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु भत्तादको च होति, ओकासफरणो च मञ्चपीठमद्दनो च सलाकग्गाही च, भिक्खुत्वेव सङ्खं गच्छति। कतमेहि पञ्चहि? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु अक्खमो होति रूपानं, अक्खमो सद्दानं, अक्खमो गन्धानं, अक्खमो रसानं, अक्खमो फोट्ठब्बानं। इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्चहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु भत्तादको च होति ओकासफरणो च मञ्चपीठमद्दनो च सलाकग्गाही च, भिक्खुत्वेव सङ्खं गच्छती”ति।

    Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu bhattādako ca hoti, okāsapharaṇo ca mañcapīṭhamaddano1 ca salākaggāhī ca, bhikkhutveva saṅkhaṁ gacchati. Katamehi pañcahi? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akkhamo hoti rūpānaṁ, akkhamo saddānaṁ, akkhamo gandhānaṁ, akkhamo rasānaṁ, akkhamo phoṭṭhabbānaṁ. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu bhattādako ca hoti okāsapharaṇo ca mañcapīṭhamaddano ca salākaggāhī ca, bhikkhutveva saṅkhaṁ gacchatī”ti.

    In the same way, a bhikkhu with five qualities eats food, takes up space, tramples beds and chairs, and takes a ticket, yet is still considered to be a bhikkhu. What five? It’s when a bhikkhu can’t endure sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches. A bhikkhu with these five qualities eats food, takes up space, tramples beds and chairs, and takes a ticket, yet is still considered to be a bhikkhu.”
