    Riches

    “पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, आदीनवा भोगेसु। कतमे पञ्च? अग्गिसाधारणा भोगा, उदकसाधारणा भोगा, राजसाधारणा भोगा, चोरसाधारणा भोगा, अप्पियेहि दायादेहि साधारणा भोगा। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च आदीनवा भोगेसु।

    “Pañcime, bhikkhave, ādīnavā bhogesu. Katame pañca? Aggisādhāraṇā bhogā, udakasādhāraṇā bhogā, rājasādhāraṇā bhogā, corasādhāraṇā bhogā, appiyehi dāyādehi sādhāraṇā bhogā. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ādīnavā bhogesu.

    “Bhikkhus, there are these five drawbacks of riches. What five? Fire, water, kings, thieves, and unloved heirs all take a share. These are the five drawbacks of riches.

    पञ्चिमे, भिक्खवे, आनिसंसा भोगेसु। कतमे पञ्च? भोगे निस्साय अत्तानं सुखेति पीणेति सम्मा सुखं परिहरति, मातापितरो सुखेति पीणेति सम्मा सुखं परिहरति, पुत्तदारदासकम्मकरपोरिसे सुखेति पीणेति सम्मा सुखं परिहरति, मित्तामच्चे सुखेति पीणेति सम्मा सुखं परिहरति, समणब्राह्मणेसु उद्धग्गिकं दक्खिणं पतिट्ठापेति सोवग्गिकं सुखविपाकं सग्गसंवत्तनिकं। इमे खो, भिक्खवे, पञ्च आनिसंसा भोगेसू”ति।

    Pañcime, bhikkhave, ānisaṁsā bhogesu. Katame pañca? Bhoge nissāya attānaṁ sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati, mātāpitaro sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati, puttadāradāsakammakaraporise sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati, mittāmacce sukheti pīṇeti sammā sukhaṁ pariharati, samaṇabrāhmaṇesu uddhaggikaṁ dakkhiṇaṁ patiṭṭhāpeti sovaggikaṁ sukhavipākaṁ saggasaṁvattanikaṁ. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca ānisaṁsā bhogesū”ti.

    There are these five benefits of riches. What five? Riches enable you to make yourself happy and pleased, to make your mother and father; your children, partners, bondservants, workers, and staff, and your friends and colleagues happy and pleased, and to keep them all happy. And they enable you to establish an uplifting religious donation for ascetics and brahmins that’s conducive to heaven, ripens in happiness, and leads to heaven. These are the five benefits of riches.”
