    Food

    “भोजनं, भिक्खवे, ददमानो दायको पटिग्गाहकानं पञ्च ठानानि देति। कतमानि पञ्च? आयुं देति, वण्णं देति, सुखं देति, बलं देति, पटिभानं देति।

    “Bhojanaṁ, bhikkhave, dadamāno dāyako paṭiggāhakānaṁ pañca ṭhānāni deti. Katamāni pañca? Āyuṁ deti, vaṇṇaṁ deti, sukhaṁ deti, balaṁ deti, paṭibhānaṁ1 deti.

    “Bhikkhus, when a giver gives food, they give the recipients five things. What five? Long life, beauty, happiness, strength, and eloquence.

    आयुं खो पन दत्वा आयुस्स भागी होति दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा;

    Āyuṁ kho pana datvā āyussa bhāgī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā;

    Giving long life, they have long life as a god or human.

    वण्णं दत्वा वण्णस्स भागी होति दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा;

    vaṇṇaṁ datvā vaṇṇassa bhāgī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā;

    Giving beauty, they have beauty as a god or human.

    सुखं दत्वा सुखस्स भागी होति दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा;

    sukhaṁ datvā sukhassa bhāgī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā;

    Giving happiness, they have happiness as a god or human.

    बलं दत्वा बलस्स भागी होति दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा;

    balaṁ datvā balassa bhāgī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā;

    Giving strength, they have strength as a god or human.

    पटिभानं दत्वा पटिभानस्स भागी होति दिब्बस्स वा मानुसस्स वा।

    paṭibhānaṁ datvā paṭibhānassa bhāgī hoti dibbassa vā mānusassa vā.

    Giving eloquence, they are eloquent as a god or human.

    भोजनं, भिक्खवे, ददमानो दायको पटिग्गाहकानं इमानि पञ्च ठानानि देतीति।

    Bhojanaṁ, bhikkhave, dadamāno dāyako paṭiggāhakānaṁ imāni pañca ṭhānāni detīti.

    When a giver gives food, they give the recipients five things.

    आयुदो बलदो धीरो, वण्णदो पटिभानदो; सुखस्स दाता मेधावी, सुखं सो अधिगच्छति।

    Āyudo balado dhīro, vaṇṇado paṭibhānado; Sukhassa dātā medhāvī, sukhaṁ so adhigacchati.

    A wise one is a giver of life, strength, beauty, and eloquence. An intelligent giver of happiness gains happiness in return.

    आयुं दत्वा बलं वण्णं, सुखञ्च पटिभानकं; दीघायु यसवा होति, यत्थ यत्थूपपज्जती”ति।

    Āyuṁ datvā balaṁ vaṇṇaṁ, sukhañca paṭibhānakaṁ; Dīghāyu yasavā hoti, yattha yatthūpapajjatī”ti.

    Giving life, strength, beauty, happiness, and eloquence, they’re long-lived and famous wherever they’re reborn.”
