Bicalutamide
Pronunciation
Definition 1
A drug used with another drug to treat prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. Bicalutamide binds to proteins called androgen receptors, which are found in some prostate cancer cells. These proteins bind to androgens (male hormones) and may cause cancer cells to grow. Bicalutamide blocks these proteins and may keep cancer cells from growing. It is a type of antiandrogen. Also called Casodex. (NCI Dictionary)
Definition 2
A synthetic, nonsteroidal antiandrogen. Bicalutamide competitively binds to cytosolic androgen receptors in target tissues, thereby inhibiting the receptor binding of androgens. This agent does not bind to most mutated forms of androgen receptors. (NCI Thesaurus)
Definition 3
An anticancer drug that belongs to the family of drugs called antiandrogens. (NCI Dictionary)
