Incredible Things About the Wheel-Turning Monarch
“चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, अच्छरिया अब्भुता धम्मा रञ्ञे चक्कवत्तिम्हि। कतमे चत्तारो?
“Cattārome, bhikkhave, acchariyā abbhutā dhammā raññe cakkavattimhi. Katame cattāro?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four incredible and amazing things about a wheel-turning monarch. What four?
सचे, भिक्खवे, खत्तियपरिसा राजानं चक्कवत्तिं दस्सनाय उपसङ्कमति, दस्सनेनपि सा अत्तमना होति। तत्र चे राजा चक्कवत्ती भासति, भासितेनपि सा अत्तमना होति। अतित्ताव, भिक्खवे, खत्तियपरिसा होति, अथ राजा चक्कवत्ती तुण्ही भवति।
Sace, bhikkhave, khattiyaparisā rājānaṁ cakkavattiṁ dassanāya upasaṅkamati, dassanenapi sā attamanā hoti. Tatra ce rājā cakkavattī bhāsati, bhāsitenapi sā attamanā hoti. Atittāva, bhikkhave, khattiyaparisā hoti, atha rājā cakkavattī tuṇhī bhavati.
If an assembly of aristocrats goes to see a wheel-turning monarch, they’re uplifted by seeing him and uplifted by hearing him speak. And when he falls silent, they’ve never had enough.
सचे, भिक्खवे, ब्राह्मणपरिसा राजानं चक्कवत्तिं दस्सनाय उपसङ्कमति, दस्सनेनपि सा अत्तमना होति। तत्र चे राजा चक्कवत्ती भासति, भासितेनपि सा अत्तमना होति। अतित्ताव, भिक्खवे, ब्राह्मणपरिसा होति, अथ राजा चक्कवत्ती तुण्ही भवति। सचे, भिक्खवे, गहपतिपरिसा राजानं चक्कवत्तिं दस्सनाय उपसङ्कमति, दस्सनेनपि सा अत्तमना होति। तत्र चे राजा चक्कवत्ती भासति, भासितेनपि सा अत्तमना होति। अतित्ताव, भिक्खवे, गहपतिपरिसा होति, अथ राजा चक्कवत्ती तुण्ही भवति। सचे, भिक्खवे, समणपरिसा राजानं चक्कवत्तिं दस्सनाय उपसङ्कमति, दस्सनेनपि सा अत्तमना होति। तत्र चे राजा चक्कवत्ती भासति, भासितेनपि सा अत्तमना होति। अतित्ताव, भिक्खवे, समणपरिसा होति, अथ राजा चक्कवत्ती तुण्ही भवति।

Tatra ce rājā cakkavattī bhāsati, bhāsitenapi sā attamanā hoti. Atittāva, bhikkhave, gahapatiparisā hoti, atha rājā cakkavattī tuṇhī bhavati. Sace, bhikkhave, samaṇaparisā rājānaṁ cakkavattiṁ dassanāya upasaṅkamati, dassanenapi sā attamanā hoti. Tatra ce rājā cakkavattī bhāsati, bhāsitenapi sā attamanā hoti. Atittāva, bhikkhave, samaṇaparisā hoti, atha rājā cakkavattī tuṇhī bhavati.
If an assembly of brahmins … householders … or ascetics goes to see a wheel-turning monarch, they’re uplifted by seeing him and uplifted by hearing him speak. And when he falls silent, they’ve never had enough.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो अच्छरिया अब्भुता धम्मा रञ्ञे चक्कवत्तिम्हि।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro acchariyā abbhutā dhammā raññe cakkavattimhi.
These are the four incredible and amazing things about a wheel-turning monarch.
एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो अच्छरिया अब्भुता धम्मा आनन्दे। कतमे चत्तारो?
Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, cattāro1 acchariyā abbhutā dhammā ānande. Katame cattāro?
In the same way, there are these four incredible and amazing things about Ānanda. What four?
सचे, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुपरिसा आनन्दं दस्सनाय उपसङ्कमति, दस्सनेनपि सा अत्तमना होति। तत्र चे आनन्दो धम्मं भासति, भासितेनपि सा अत्तमना होति। अतित्ताव, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुपरिसा होति, अथ आनन्दो तुण्ही भवति।

Sace, bhikkhave, bhikkhuniparisā …pe… sace, bhikkhave, upāsakaparisā …pe… sace, bhikkhave, upāsikāparisā ānandaṁ dassanāya upasaṅkamati, dassanenapi sā attamanā hoti. Tatra ce ānando dhammaṁ bhāsati, bhāsitenapi sā attamanā hoti. Atittāva, bhikkhave, upāsikāparisā hoti, atha ānando tuṇhī bhavati.
If an assembly of nuns … laymen … or laywomen goes to see Ānanda, they’re uplifted by seeing him and uplifted by hearing him speak. And when he falls silent, they’ve never had enough.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो अच्छरिया अब्भुता धम्मा आनन्दे”ति।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro acchariyā abbhutā dhammā ānande”ti.
These are the four incredible and amazing things about Ānanda.”

Attānuvādaūmi ca, dve ca nānā dve ca honti; Mettā dve ca acchariyā, aparā ca tathā duveti.
