“चरतो चेपि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो उप्पज्जति कामवितक्को वा ब्यापादवितक्को वा विहिंसावितक्को वा। तञ्चे भिक्खु अधिवासेति, नप्पजहति न विनोदेति न ब्यन्तीकरोति न अनभावं गमेति, चरम्पि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु एवंभूतो ‘अनातापी अनोत्तापी सततं समितं कुसीतो हीनवीरियोऽति वुच्चति।
“Carato cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno uppajjati kāmavitakko vā byāpādavitakko vā vihiṁsāvitakko vā. Tañce bhikkhu adhivāseti, nappajahati na vinodeti na byantīkaroti1 na anabhāvaṁ gameti, carampi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu evaṁbhūto ‘anātāpī anottāpī satataṁ samitaṁ kusīto hīnavīriyo’ti vuccati.
“Bhikkhus, suppose a bhikkhu has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while walking. They tolerate it and don’t give it up, get rid of it, eliminate it, and obliterate it. Such a bhikkhu is said to be ‘not keen or prudent, always lazy, and lacking energy’ when walking.
ठितस्स चेपि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो उप्पज्जति कामवितक्को वा ब्यापादवितक्को वा विहिंसावितक्को वा। तञ्चे भिक्खु अधिवासेति, नप्पजहति न विनोदेति न ब्यन्तीकरोति न अनभावं गमेति, ठितोपि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु एवंभूतो ‘अनातापी अनोत्तापी सततं समितं कुसीतो हीनवीरियोऽति वुच्चति। निसिन्नस्स चेपि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो उप्पज्जति कामवितक्को वा ब्यापादवितक्को वा विहिंसावितक्को वा। तञ्चे भिक्खु अधिवासेति, नप्पजहति न विनोदेति न ब्यन्तीकरोति न अनभावं गमेति, निसिन्नोपि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु एवंभूतो ‘अनातापी अनोत्तापी सततं समितं कुसीतो हीनवीरियोऽति वुच्चति। सयानस्स चेपि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खुनो जागरस्स उप्पज्जति कामवितक्को वा ब्यापादवितक्को वा विहिंसावितक्को वा। तञ्चे भिक्खु अधिवासेति, नप्पजहति न विनोदेति न ब्यन्तीकरोति न अनभावं गमेति, सयानोपि, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु जागरो एवंभूतो ‘अनातापी अनोत्तापी सततं समितं कुसीतो हीनवीरियोऽति वुच्चति।

Sayānassa cepi, bhikkhave, bhikkhuno jāgarassa uppajjati kāmavitakko vā byāpādavitakko vā vihiṁsāvitakko vā. Tañce bhikkhu adhivāseti, nappajahati na vinodeti na byantīkaroti na anabhāvaṁ gameti, sayānopi, bhikkhave, bhikkhu jāgaro evaṁbhūto ‘anātāpī anottāpī satataṁ samitaṁ kusīto hīnavīriyo’ti vuccati.
Suppose a bhikkhu has a sensual, malicious, or cruel thought while standing … sitting … or when lying down while awake. They tolerate it and don’t give it up, get rid of it, eliminate it, and obliterate it. Such a bhikkhu is said to be ‘not keen or prudent, always lazy, and lacking energy’ when lying down while awake.

चरं वा यदि वा तिट्ठं, निसिन्नो उद वा सयं; यो वितक्कं वितक्केति, पापकं गेहनिस्सितं।
Caraṁ vā yadi vā tiṭṭhaṁ, nisinno uda vā sayaṁ; Yo vitakkaṁ vitakketi, pāpakaṁ gehanissitaṁ.
Whether walking or standing, sitting or lying down, if you think a bad thought to do with the lay life,
कुम्मग्गप्पटिपन्नो सो, मोहनेय्येसु मुच्छितो; अभब्बो तादिसो भिक्खु, फुट्ठुं सम्बोधिमुत्तमं।
Kummaggappaṭipanno so, Mohaneyyesu mucchito; Abhabbo tādiso bhikkhu, Phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttamaṁ.
you’re on the wrong path, lost among things that delude. Such a bhikkhu is incapable of experiencing the highest awakening.
यो च चरं वा तिट्ठं वा, निसिन्नो उद वा सयं; वितक्कं समयित्वान, वितक्कूपसमे रतो; भब्बो सो तादिसो भिक्खु, फुट्ठुं सम्बोधिमुत्तमन्”ति।
Yo ca caraṁ vā tiṭṭhaṁ vā, Nisinno uda vā sayaṁ; Vitakkaṁ samayitvāna, Vitakkūpasame rato; Bhabbo so tādiso bhikkhu, Phuṭṭhuṁ sambodhimuttaman”ti.
But one who, whether standing or walking, sitting or lying down, has calmed their thoughts, loving peace of mind; such a bhikkhu is capable of experiencing the highest awakening.”
