    Bad Character (4th)

    “पापधम्मञ्च वो, भिक्खवे, देसेस्सामि, पापधम्मेन पापधम्मतरञ्च; कल्याणधम्मञ्च, कल्याणधम्मेन कल्याणधम्मतरञ्च। तं सुणाथ …पे…।

    “Pāpadhammañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, pāpadhammena pāpadhammatarañca; kalyāṇadhammañca, kalyāṇadhammena kalyāṇadhammatarañca. Taṁ suṇātha …pe….

    “Bhikkhus, I will teach you bad character and worse character, good character and better character.

    “कतमो च, भिक्खवे, पापधम्मो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो मिच्छादिट्ठिको होति …पे… मिच्छाञाणी होति, मिच्छाविमुत्ति होति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, पापधम्मो।

    “Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pāpadhammo? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco micchādiṭṭhiko hoti …pe… micchāñāṇī hoti, micchāvimutti hoti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāpadhammo.

    And who has bad character? It’s someone who has wrong view, wrong thought, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, wrong immersion, wrong knowledge, and wrong freedom. This is called bad character.

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, पापधम्मेन पापधम्मतरो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अत्तना च मिच्छादिट्ठिको होति, परञ्च मिच्छादिट्ठिया समादपेति …पे… अत्तना च मिच्छाञाणी होति, परञ्च मिच्छाञाणे समादपेति; अत्तना च मिच्छाविमुत्ति होति, परञ्च मिच्छाविमुत्तिया समादपेति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, पापधम्मेन पापधम्मतरो।

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, pāpadhammena pāpadhammataro? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca micchādiṭṭhiko hoti, parañca micchādiṭṭhiyā samādapeti …pe… attanā ca micchāñāṇī hoti, parañca micchāñāṇe samādapeti; attanā ca micchāvimutti hoti, parañca micchāvimuttiyā samādapeti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, pāpadhammena pāpadhammataro.

    And who has worse character? It’s someone who has wrong view, wrong thought, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, wrong immersion, wrong knowledge, and wrong freedom. And they encourage others in these same qualities. This is called worse character.

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, कल्याणधम्मो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो सम्मादिट्ठिको होति …पे… सम्माञाणी होति, सम्माविमुत्ति होति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, कल्याणधम्मो।

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, kalyāṇadhammo? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco sammādiṭṭhiko hoti …pe… sammāñāṇī hoti, sammāvimutti hoti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kalyāṇadhammo.

    And who has good character? It’s someone who has right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right immersion, right knowledge, and right freedom. This is called good character.

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, कल्याणधम्मेन कल्याणधम्मतरो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अत्तना च सम्मादिट्ठिको होति, परञ्च सम्मादिट्ठिया समादपेति …पे… अत्तना च सम्माञाणी होति, परञ्च सम्माञाणे समादपेति; अत्तना च सम्माविमुत्ति होति, परञ्च सम्माविमुत्तिया समादपेति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, कल्याणधम्मेन कल्याणधम्मतरो”ति।

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, kalyāṇadhammena kalyāṇadhammataro? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca sammādiṭṭhiko hoti, parañca sammādiṭṭhiyā samādapeti …pe… attanā ca sammāñāṇī hoti, parañca sammāñāṇe samādapeti; attanā ca sammāvimutti hoti, parañca sammāvimuttiyā samādapeti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kalyāṇadhammena kalyāṇadhammataro”ti.

    And who has better character? It’s someone who has right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right immersion, right knowledge, and right freedom. And they encourage others in these same qualities. This is called better character.”

    Dasamaṁ.

    सप्पुरिसवग्गो पठमो।

    Sappurisavaggo paṭhamo.

    तस्सुद्दानं

    Tassuddānaṁ

    सिक्खापदञ्च अस्सद्धं, सत्तकम्मं अथो च दसकम्मं; अट्ठङ्गिकञ्च दसमग्गं, द्वे पापधम्मा अपरे द्वेति।

    Sikkhāpadañca assaddhaṁ, Sattakammaṁ atho ca dasakammaṁ; Aṭṭhaṅgikañca dasamaggaṁ, Dve pāpadhammā apare dveti.
