    “सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, अप्पमत्तकं इमस्मिं जम्बुदीपे आरामरामणेय्यकं वनरामणेय्यकं भूमिरामणेय्यकं पोक्खरणिरामणेय्यकं; अथ खो एतदेव बहुतरं यदिदं उक्कूलविकूलं नदीविदुग्गं खाणुकण्टकट्ठानं पब्बतविसमं; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, अप्पका ते सत्ता ये थलजा, अथ खो एतेव सत्ता बहुतरा ये ओदका।

    “Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, appamattakaṁ imasmiṁ jambudīpe ārāmarāmaṇeyyakaṁ vanarāmaṇeyyakaṁ bhūmirāmaṇeyyakaṁ pokkharaṇirāmaṇeyyakaṁ; atha kho etadeva bahutaraṁ yadidaṁ ukkūlavikūlaṁ nadīviduggaṁ khāṇukaṇṭakaṭṭhānaṁ1 pabbatavisamaṁ; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye thalajā, atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye odakā.

    “Just as, bhikkhus, in India the delightful parks, woods, meadows, and lotus ponds are few, while the hilly terrain, inaccessible riverlands, stumps and thorns, and rugged mountains are many; so too the sentient beings born on land are few, while those born in water are many.

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye manussesu paccājāyanti; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye aññatra manussehi paccājāyanti.

    … so too the sentient beings reborn as humans are few, while those not reborn as humans are many.

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye majjhimesu janapadesu paccājāyanti; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye paccantimesu janapadesu paccājāyanti aviññātāresu milakkhesu.

    … so too the sentient beings reborn in civilized countries are few, while those reborn in the borderlands, among strange barbarian tribes, are many.

    … एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, अप्पका ते सत्ता ये पञ्ञवन्तो अजळा अनेळमूगा पटिबला सुभासितदुब्भासितस्स अत्थमञ्ञातुं; अथ खो एतेव सत्ता बहुतरा ये दुप्पञ्ञा जळा एळमूगा न पटिबला सुभासितदुब्भासितस्स अत्थमञ्ञातुं।

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye paññavanto ajaḷā aneḷamūgā paṭibalā subhāsitadubbhāsitassa atthamaññātuṁ; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye duppaññā jaḷā eḷamūgā na paṭibalā subhāsitadubbhāsitassa atthamaññātuṁ.

    … so too the sentient beings who are wise, bright, clever, and able to distinguish what is well said from what is poorly said are few, while the sentient beings who are witless, dull, stupid, and unable to distinguish what is well said from what is poorly said are many.

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye ariyena paññācakkhunā samannāgatā; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye avijjāgatā sammūḷhā.

    … so too the sentient beings who have the noble eye of wisdom are few, while those who are ignorant and confused are many.

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye labhanti tathāgataṁ dassanāya; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye na labhanti tathāgataṁ dassanāya.

    … so too the sentient beings who get to see a Realized One are few, while those who don’t get to see a Realized One are many.

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye labhanti tathāgatappaveditaṁ dhammavinayaṁ savanāya; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye na labhanti tathāgatappaveditaṁ dhammavinayaṁ savanāya.

    … so too the sentient beings who get to hear the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One are few, while those sentient beings who don’t get to hear the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One are many.

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye sutvā dhammaṁ dhārenti; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye sutvā dhammaṁ na dhārenti.

    … so too the sentient beings who remember the teachings they hear are few, while those who don’t remember the teachings are many.

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye dhātānaṁ2 dhammānaṁ atthaṁ upaparikkhanti; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye dhātānaṁ dhammānaṁ atthaṁ na upaparikkhanti.

    … so too the sentient beings who examine the meaning of the teachings they have memorized are few, while those who don’t examine the meaning of the teachings are many.

    … एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, अप्पका ते सत्ता ये अत्थमञ्ञाय धम्ममञ्ञाय धम्मानुधम्मं पटिपज्जन्ति; अथ खो एतेव सत्ता बहुतरा ये अत्थमञ्ञाय धम्ममञ्ञाय धम्मानुधम्मं न पटिपज्जन्ति।

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammaṁ paṭipajjanti; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammaṁ na paṭipajjanti.

    … so too the sentient beings who understand the meaning and the teaching and practice accordingly are few, while those who understand the meaning and the teaching but don’t practice accordingly are many.

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye saṁvejaniyesu ṭhānesu saṁvijjanti; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye saṁvejaniyesu ṭhānesu na saṁvijjanti.

    … so too the sentient beings inspired by inspiring places are few, while those who are uninspired are many.

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye saṁviggā yoniso padahanti; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye saṁviggā yoniso na padahanti.

    … so too the sentient beings who, being inspired, strive effectively are few, while those who, even though inspired, don’t strive effectively are many.

    … एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, अप्पका ते सत्ता ये ववस्सग्गारम्मणं करित्वा लभन्ति समाधिं लभन्ति चित्तस्सेकग्गतं; अथ खो एतेव सत्ता बहुतरा ये ववस्सग्गारम्मणं करित्वा न लभन्ति समाधिं न लभन्ति चित्तस्सेकग्गतं।

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye vavassaggārammaṇaṁ karitvā labhanti samādhiṁ3 labhanti cittassekaggataṁ; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye vavassaggārammaṇaṁ karitvā na labhanti samādhiṁ na labhanti cittassekaggataṁ.

    … so too the sentient beings who, relying on letting go, gain immersion, gain unification of mind are few, while those who don’t gain immersion, don’t gain unification of mind relying on letting go are many.

    … एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, अप्पका ते सत्ता ये अन्नग्गरसग्गानं लाभिनो; अथ खो एतेव सत्ता बहुतरा ये अन्नग्गरसग्गानं न लाभिनो, उञ्छेन कपालाभतेन यापेन्ति।

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye annaggarasaggānaṁ lābhino; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye annaggarasaggānaṁ na lābhino, uñchena kapālābhatena yāpenti.

    … so too the sentient beings who get the best food and flavors are few, while those who don’t get the best food and flavors, but get by with scraps in an alms bowl are many.

    … एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, अप्पका ते सत्ता ये अत्थरसस्स धम्मरसस्स विमुत्तिरसस्स लाभिनो; अथ खो एतेव सत्ता बहुतरा ये अत्थरसस्स धम्मरसस्स विमुत्तिरसस्स न लाभिनो।

    … Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye attharasassa dhammarasassa vimuttirasassa lābhino; atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye attharasassa dhammarasassa vimuttirasassa na lābhino.

    … so too the sentient beings who get the essence of the meaning, the essence of the teaching, and the essence of freedom are few, while the sentient beings who don’t get the essence of the meaning, the essence of the teaching, and the essence of freedom are many.

    तस्मातिह, भिक्खवे, एवं सिक्खितब्बं: ‘अत्थरसस्स धम्मरसस्स विमुत्तिरसस्स लाभिनो भविस्सामाऽति। एवञ्हि वो, भिक्खवे, सिक्खितब्बन्”ति।

    Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ‘attharasassa dhammarasassa vimuttirasassa lābhino bhavissāmā’ti. Evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.

    So you should train like this: ‘We will get the essence of the meaning, the essence of the teaching, the essence of freedom.’ That’s how you should train.”

    वग्गो चतुत्थो।
