एकं समयं भगवा सावत्थियं विहरति जेतवने अनाथपिण्डिकस्स आरामे। अथ खो छन्नो परिब्बाजको येनायस्मा आनन्दो तेनुपसङ्कमि; उपसङ्कमित्वा आयस्मता आनन्देन सद्धिं सम्मोदि। सम्मोदनीयं कथं सारणीयं वीतिसारेत्वा एकमन्तं निसीदि। एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो छन्नो परिब्बाजको आयस्मन्तं आनन्दं एतदवोच:
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. Atha kho channo paribbājako yenāyasmā ānando tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā ānandena saddhiṁ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho channo paribbājako āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ etadavoca:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then the wanderer Channa went up to Venerable Ānanda and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Ānanda:
“तुम्हेपि, आवुसो आनन्द, रागस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेथ, दोसस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेथ, मोहस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेथा”ति।
“tumhepi, āvuso ānanda, rāgassa pahānaṁ paññāpetha, dosassa pahānaṁ paññāpetha, mohassa pahānaṁ paññāpethā”ti.
“Friend Ānanda, do you advocate giving up greed, hate, and delusion?”
“मयं खो, आवुसो, रागस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेम, दोसस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेम, मोहस्स पहानं पञ्ञपेमा”ति।
“Mayaṁ kho, āvuso, rāgassa pahānaṁ paññāpema, dosassa pahānaṁ paññāpema, mohassa pahānaṁ paññapemā”ti.
“We do, friend.”
“किं पन तुम्हे, आवुसो, रागे आदीनवं दिस्वा रागस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेथ, किं दोसे आदीनवं दिस्वा दोसस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेथ, किं मोहे आदीनवं दिस्वा मोहस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेथा”ति?
“Kiṁ pana tumhe, āvuso, rāge ādīnavaṁ disvā rāgassa pahānaṁ paññāpetha, kiṁ dose ādīnavaṁ disvā dosassa pahānaṁ paññāpetha, kiṁ mohe ādīnavaṁ disvā mohassa pahānaṁ paññāpethā”ti?
“But what drawbacks have you seen, Friend Ānanda, that you advocate giving up greed, hate, and delusion?”
“रत्तो खो, आवुसो, रागेन अभिभूतो परियादिन्नचित्तो अत्तब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, परब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, उभयब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, चेतसिकम्पि दुक्खं दोमनस्सं पटिसंवेदेति; रागे पहीने नेवत्तब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, न परब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, न उभयब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, न चेतसिकं दुक्खं दोमनस्सं पटिसंवेदेति। रत्तो खो, आवुसो, रागेन अभिभूतो परियादिन्नचित्तो कायेन दुच्चरितं चरति, वाचाय दुच्चरितं चरति, मनसा दुच्चरितं चरति; रागे पहीने नेव कायेन दुच्चरितं चरति, न वाचाय दुच्चरितं चरति, न मनसा दुच्चरितं चरति। रत्तो खो, आवुसो, रागेन अभिभूतो परियादिन्नचित्तो अत्तत्थम्पि यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति, परत्थम्पि यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति, उभयत्थम्पि यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति; रागे पहीने अत्तत्थम्पि यथाभूतं पजानाति, परत्थम्पि यथाभूतं पजानाति, उभयत्थम्पि यथाभूतं पजानाति। रागो खो, आवुसो, अन्धकरणो अचक्खुकरणो अञ्ञाणकरणो पञ्ञानिरोधिको विघातपक्खिको अनिब्बानसंवत्तनिको।
“Ratto kho, āvuso, rāgena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti; rāge pahīne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti. Ratto kho, āvuso, rāgena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati; rāge pahīne neva kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, na vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, na manasā duccaritaṁ carati. Ratto kho, āvuso, rāgena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attatthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti, paratthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti, ubhayatthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti; rāge pahīne attatthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, paratthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ubhayatthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti. Rāgo kho, āvuso, andhakaraṇo acakkhukaraṇo aññāṇakaraṇo paññānirodhiko vighātapakkhiko anibbānasaṁvattaniko.
“A greedy person, overcome by greed, intends to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They experience mental pain and sadness. When greed has been given up, they don’t intend to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They don’t experience mental pain and sadness. A greedy person does bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. When greed has been given up, they don’t do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. A greedy person doesn’t truly understand what’s for their own good, the good of another, or the good of both. When greed has been given up, they truly understand what’s for their own good, the good of another, or the good of both. Greed is a destroyer of sight, vision, and knowledge. It blocks wisdom, it’s on the side of anguish, and it doesn’t lead to Nibbana.

मूळ्हो खो, आवुसो, मोहेन अभिभूतो परियादिन्नचित्तो अत्तब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, परब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, उभयब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, चेतसिकम्पि दुक्खं दोमनस्सं पटिसंवेदेति; मोहे पहीने नेवत्तब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, न परब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, न उभयब्याबाधायपि चेतेति, न चेतसिकं दुक्खं दोमनस्सं पटिसंवेदेति। मूळ्हो खो, आवुसो, मोहेन अभिभूतो परियादिन्नचित्तो कायेन दुच्चरितं चरति, वाचाय दुच्चरितं चरति, मनसा दुच्चरितं चरति; मोहे पहीने नेव कायेन दुच्चरितं चरति, न वाचाय दुच्चरितं चरति, न मनसा दुच्चरितं चरति। मूळ्हो खो, आवुसो, मोहेन अभिभूतो परियादिन्नचित्तो अत्तत्थम्पि यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति, परत्थम्पि यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति, उभयत्थम्पि यथाभूतं नप्पजानाति; मोहे पहीने अत्तत्थम्पि यथाभूतं पजानाति, परत्थम्पि यथाभूतं पजानाति, उभयत्थम्पि यथाभूतं पजानाति। मोहो खो, आवुसो, अन्धकरणो अचक्खुकरणो अञ्ञाणकरणो पञ्ञानिरोधिको विघातपक्खिको अनिब्बानसंवत्तनिको।
mūḷho kho, āvuso, mohena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti; mohe pahīne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti. Mūḷho kho, āvuso, mohena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati; mohe pahīne neva kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, na vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, na manasā duccaritaṁ carati. Mūḷho kho, āvuso, mohena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attatthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti, paratthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti, ubhayatthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti; mohe pahīne attatthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, paratthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ubhayatthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti. Moho kho, āvuso, andhakaraṇo acakkhukaraṇo aññāṇakaraṇo paññānirodhiko vighātapakkhiko anibbānasaṁvattaniko.
A deluded person, overcome by delusion, intends to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They experience mental pain and sadness. When delusion has been given up, they don’t intend to hurt themselves, hurt others, and hurt both. They don’t experience mental pain and sadness. A deluded person does bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. When delusion has been given up, they don’t do bad things by way of body, speech, and mind. A deluded person doesn’t truly understand what’s for their own good, the good of another, or the good of both. When delusion has been given up, they truly understand what’s for their own good, the good of another, or the good of both. Delusion is a destroyer of sight, vision, and knowledge; it blocks wisdom, it’s on the side of anguish, and it doesn’t lead to Nibbana.
इदं खो मयं, आवुसो, रागे आदीनवं दिस्वा रागस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेम। इदं दोसे आदीनवं दिस्वा दोसस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेम। इदं मोहे आदीनवं दिस्वा मोहस्स पहानं पञ्ञापेमा”ति।
Idaṁ kho mayaṁ, āvuso, rāge ādīnavaṁ disvā rāgassa pahānaṁ paññāpema. Idaṁ dose ādīnavaṁ disvā dosassa pahānaṁ paññāpema. Idaṁ mohe ādīnavaṁ disvā mohassa pahānaṁ paññāpemā”ti.
This is the drawback we’ve seen in greed, hate, and delusion, and this is why we advocate giving them up.”
“अत्थि पनावुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाया”ति?
“Atthi panāvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā”ti?
“But, friend, is there a path and a practice for giving up that greed, hate, and delusion?”
“अत्थावुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाया”ति।
“Atthāvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā”ti.
“There is, friend, a path and a practice for giving up that greed, hate, and delusion.”
“कतमो पनावुसो, मग्गो कतमा पटिपदा एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाया”ति?
“Katamo panāvuso, maggo katamā paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā”ti?
“Well, what is it?”
“अयमेव अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि …पे… सम्मासमाधि। अयं खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अयं पटिपदा एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाया”ति।
“Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. Ayaṁ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā”ti.
“It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. This is the path, this is the practice for giving up that greed, hate, and delusion.”
“भद्दको खो, आवुसो, मग्गो भद्दिका पटिपदा एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाय। अलञ्च पनावुसो आनन्द, अप्पमादाया”ति।
“Bhaddako kho, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāya. Alañca panāvuso ānanda, appamādāyā”ti.
“This is a fine path, a fine practice, for giving up that greed, hate, and delusion. Just this much is enough to be diligent.”
