    19. Chaṭṭhavagga

    Chapter Six

    “एतदग्गं, भिक्खवे, मम सावकानं उपासकानं पठमं सरणं गच्छन्तानं यदिदं तपुस्सभल्लिका वाणिजा।

    “Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, mama sāvakānaṁ upāsakānaṁ paṭhamaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchantānaṁ yadidaṁ tapussabhallikā1 vāṇijā.

    “The foremost of my laymen in first going for refuge are the merchants Tapussa and Bhallika.

    … दायकानं यदिदं सुदत्तो गहपति अनाथपिण्डिको।

    … Dāyakānaṁ yadidaṁ sudatto gahapati anāthapiṇḍiko.

    … as a donor is the householder Sudatta Anāthapiṇḍika.

    … धम्मकथिकानं यदिदं चित्तो गहपति मच्छिकासण्डिको।

    … Dhammakathikānaṁ yadidaṁ citto gahapati macchikāsaṇḍiko.

    … who speak on the teaching is the householder Citta Macchikāsaṇḍika.

    … चतूहि सङ्गहवत्थूहि परिसं सङ्गण्हन्तानं यदिदं हत्थको आळवको।

    … Catūhi saṅgahavatthūhi parisaṁ saṅgaṇhantānaṁ yadidaṁ hatthako āḷavako.

    … who attract a congregation by the four ways of being inclusive is Hatthaka of Āḷavī.

    … पणीतदायकानं यदिदं महानामो सक्को।

    … Paṇītadāyakānaṁ yadidaṁ mahānāmo sakko.

    … who donate fine things is Mahānāma Sakka.

    … मनापदायकानं यदिदं उग्गो गहपति वेसालिको।

    … Manāpadāyakānaṁ yadidaṁ uggo gahapati vesāliko.

    … who donate nice things is the householder Ugga of Vesālī.

    … सङ्घुपट्ठाकानं यदिदं हत्थिगामको उग्गतो गहपति।

    … Saṅghupaṭṭhākānaṁ yadidaṁ hatthigāmako uggato gahapati.

    … who attend on the Saṅgha is the householder Uggata of Elephant Village.

    … अवेच्चप्पसन्नानं यदिदं सूरम्बट्ठो।

    … Aveccappasannānaṁ yadidaṁ sūrambaṭṭho.

    … who have experiential confidence is Sūrambaṭṭha.

    … पुग्गलप्पसन्नानं यदिदं जीवको कोमारभच्चो।

    … Puggalappasannānaṁ yadidaṁ jīvako komārabhacco.

    … who have confidence in a person is Jīvaka Komārabhacca.

    … विस्सासकानं यदिदं नकुलपिता गहपती”ति।

    … Vissāsakānaṁ yadidaṁ nakulapitā gahapatī”ti.

    … who are intimate is the householder Nakula’s father.”

    वग्गो छट्ठो।
