Chavālātasutta
A Firebrand
“चत्तारोमे, भिक्खवे, पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिं। कतमे चत्तारो?
“Cattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. Katame cattāro?
“Bhikkhus, these four people are found in the world. What four?
नेवत्तहिताय पटिपन्नो नो परहिताय,
Nevattahitāya paṭipanno no parahitāya,
One who practices to benefit neither themselves nor others;
परहिताय पटिपन्नो नो अत्तहिताय,
parahitāya paṭipanno no attahitāya,
one who practices to benefit others, but not themselves;
अत्तहिताय पटिपन्नो नो परहिताय,
attahitāya paṭipanno no parahitāya,
one who practices to benefit themselves, but not others; and
अत्तहिताय चेव पटिपन्नो परहिताय च।
attahitāya ceva1 paṭipanno parahitāya ca.
one who practices to benefit both themselves and others.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, छवालातं उभतो पदित्तं, मज्झे गूथगतं, नेव गामे कट्ठत्थं फरति न अरञ्ञे (…); तथूपमाहं, भिक्खवे, इमं पुग्गलं वदामि य्वायं पुग्गलो नेवत्तहिताय पटिपन्नो नो परहिताय।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, chavālātaṁ ubhato padittaṁ, majjhe gūthagataṁ, neva gāme kaṭṭhatthaṁ pharati na araññe (…); tathūpamāhaṁ, bhikkhave, imaṁ puggalaṁ vadāmi yvāyaṁ puggalo nevattahitāya paṭipanno no parahitāya.
Suppose there was a firebrand for lighting a funeral pyre, burning at both ends, and smeared with dung in the middle. It couldn’t be used as timber either in the village or the wilderness. The person who practices to benefit neither themselves nor others is like this, I say.
तत्र, भिक्खवे, य्वायं पुग्गलो परहिताय पटिपन्नो नो अत्तहिताय, अयं इमेसं द्विन्नं पुग्गलानं अभिक्कन्ततरो च पणीततरो च। तत्र, भिक्खवे, य्वायं पुग्गलो अत्तहिताय पटिपन्नो नो परहिताय, अयं इमेसं तिण्णं पुग्गलानं अभिक्कन्ततरो च पणीततरो च। तत्र, भिक्खवे, य्वायं पुग्गलो अत्तहिताय चेव पटिपन्नो परहिताय च, अयं इमेसं चतुन्नं पुग्गलानं अग्गो च सेट्ठो च पामोक्खो च उत्तमो च पवरो च।
Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaṁ puggalo parahitāya paṭipanno no attahitāya, ayaṁ imesaṁ dvinnaṁ puggalānaṁ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro ca. Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaṁ puggalo attahitāya paṭipanno no parahitāya, ayaṁ imesaṁ tiṇṇaṁ puggalānaṁ abhikkantataro ca paṇītataro ca. Tatra, bhikkhave, yvāyaṁ puggalo attahitāya ceva paṭipanno parahitāya ca, ayaṁ imesaṁ catunnaṁ puggalānaṁ aggo ca seṭṭho ca pāmokkho ca uttamo ca pavaro ca.
The person who practices to benefit others, but not themselves, is better than that. The person who practices to benefit themselves, but not others, is better than both of those. But the person who practices to benefit both themselves and others is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of the four.
सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, गवा खीरं, खीरम्हा दधि, दधिम्हा नवनीतं, नवनीतम्हा सप्पि, सप्पिम्हा सप्पिमण्डो, सप्पिमण्डो तत्थ अग्गमक्खायति; एवमेवं खो, भिक्खवे, य्वायं पुग्गलो अत्तहिताय चेव पटिपन्नो परहिताय च, अयं इमेसं चतुन्नं पुग्गलानं अग्गो च सेट्ठो च पामोक्खो च उत्तमो च पवरो च।
Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, gavā khīraṁ, khīramhā dadhi, dadhimhā navanītaṁ, navanītamhā sappi, sappimhā sappimaṇḍo, sappimaṇḍo2 tattha aggamakkhāyati; evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, yvāyaṁ puggalo attahitāya ceva paṭipanno parahitāya ca, ayaṁ imesaṁ catunnaṁ puggalānaṁ aggo ca seṭṭho ca pāmokkho ca uttamo ca pavaro ca.
From a cow comes milk, from milk comes curds, from curds come butter, from butter comes ghee, and from ghee comes cream of ghee. And the cream of ghee is said to be the best of these. In the same way, the person who practices to benefit both themselves and others is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of the four.
इमे खो, भिक्खवे, चत्तारो पुग्गला सन्तो संविज्जमाना लोकस्मिन्”ति।
Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmin”ti.
These are the four people found in the world.”
