Cisplatin

Definition 1
A drug used to treat malignant mesothelioma, non-small cell lung cancer, squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, and cancers of the bladder, cervix, ovaries, and testes. It is used in patients whose cancer cannot be treated with or has not gotten better with other anticancer treatment. It is also being studied in the treatment of other types of cancer. Cisplatin contains the metal platinum. It kills cancer cells by damaging their DNA and stopping them from dividing. It is a type of DNA crosslinking agent. Also called Platinol and Platinol-AQ. An alkylating-like inorganic platinum agent (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum) with antineoplastic activity. Cisplatin forms highly reactive, charged, platinum complexes which bind to nucleophilic groups such as GC-rich sites in DNA inducing intrastrand and interstrand DNA cross-links, as well as DNA-protein cross-links.
