    The Benefits of Giving

“Pañcime, bhikkhave, dāne ānisaṁsā. Katame pañca? Bahuno janassa piyo hoti manāpo; santo sappurisā bhajanti; kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhuggacchati; gihidhammā anapagato1 hoti; kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugatiṁ saggaṁ lokaṁ upapajjati. Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca dāne ānisaṁsāti.

“Bhikkhus, there are five benefits of giving. What five? A giver, a donor is dear and beloved by many people. Good people associate with them. They get a good reputation. They don’t neglect a layperson’s duties. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm. These are the five benefits of giving.

Dadamāno piyo hoti, sataṁ dhammaṁ anukkamaṁ; Santo naṁ sadā bhajanti, saññatā brahmacārayo.

Giving, one is loved, and follows the way of the good. The good, disciplined spiritual practitioners associate with you.

Te tassa dhammaṁ desenti, Sabbadukkhāpanūdanaṁ; Yaṁ so dhammaṁ idhaññāya, Parinibbāti anāsavo”ti.

They teach you the Dhamma that dispels all suffering. Having understood this teaching, the undefiled become fully extinguished.”

    Pañcamaṁ.
