    Rebirth by Giving

    “अट्ठिमा, भिक्खवे, दानूपपत्तियो। कतमा अट्ठ?

    “Aṭṭhimā, bhikkhave, dānūpapattiyo. Katamā aṭṭha?

    “Bhikkhus, there are these eight rebirths by giving. What eight?

    इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो दानं देति समणस्स वा ब्राह्मणस्स वा अन्नं पानं वत्थं यानं मालागन्धविलेपनं सेय्यावसथपदीपेय्यं। सो यं देति तं पच्चासीसति। सो पस्सति खत्तियमहासाले वा ब्राह्मणमहासाले वा गहपतिमहासाले वा पञ्चहि कामगुणेहि समप्पिते समङ्गीभूते परिचारयमाने। तस्स एवं होति: ‘अहो वताहं कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा खत्तियमहासालानं वा ब्राह्मणमहासालानं वा गहपतिमहासालानं वा सहब्यतं उपपज्जेय्यन्ऽति। सो तं चित्तं दहति, तं चित्तं अधिट्ठाति, तं चित्तं भावेति। तस्स तं चित्तं हीने विमुत्तं, उत्तरि अभावितं, तत्रूपपत्तिया संवत्तति। कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा खत्तियमहासालानं वा ब्राह्मणमहासालानं वा गहपतिमहासालानं वा सहब्यतं उपपज्जति। तञ्च खो सीलवतो वदामि, नो दुस्सीलस्स। इज्झति, भिक्खवे, सीलवतो चेतोपणिधि विसुद्धत्ता।

    Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco dānaṁ deti samaṇassa vā brāhmaṇassa vā annaṁ pānaṁ vatthaṁ yānaṁ mālāgandhavilepanaṁ seyyāvasathapadīpeyyaṁ. So yaṁ deti taṁ paccāsīsati. So passati khattiyamahāsāle vā brāhmaṇamahāsāle vā gahapatimahāsāle vā pañcahi kāmaguṇehi samappite samaṅgībhūte paricārayamāne. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā khattiyamahāsālānaṁ vā brāhmaṇamahāsālānaṁ vā gahapatimahāsālānaṁ vā sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti. So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti. Tassa taṁ cittaṁ hīne vimuttaṁ, uttari abhāvitaṁ, tatrūpapattiyā saṁvattati. Kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā khattiyamahāsālānaṁ vā brāhmaṇamahāsālānaṁ vā gahapatimahāsālānaṁ vā sahabyataṁ upapajjati. Tañca kho sīlavato vadāmi, no dussīlassa. Ijjhati, bhikkhave, sīlavato cetopaṇidhi visuddhattā.

    First, someone gives to ascetics or brahmins such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting. Whatever they give they expect back. They see a well-to-do aristocrat or brahmin or householder amusing themselves, supplied and provided with the five kinds of sensual stimulation. It occurs to them: ‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of well-to-do aristocrats or brahmins or householders!’ They settle on that idea, concentrate on it and develop it. As they’ve settled for less and not developed further, their idea leads to rebirth there. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in the company of well-to-do aristocrats or brahmins or householders. But I say that this is only for those of ethical conduct, not for the unethical. The heart’s wish of an ethical person succeeds because of their purity.

Kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā cātumahārājikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati. Tañca kho sīlavato vadāmi, no dussīlassa. Ijjhati, bhikkhave, sīlavato cetopaṇidhi visuddhattā.

    Next, someone gives to ascetics or brahmins … Whatever they give they expect back. And they’ve heard: ‘The Gods of the Four Great Kings are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.’ It occurs to them: ‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the Gods of the Four Great Kings!’ … When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in the company of the Gods of the Four Great Kings. But I say that this is only for those of ethical conduct, not for the unethical. The heart’s wish of an ethical person succeeds because of their purity.

    ‘The Gods Who Love to Create …’

    परनिम्मितवसवत्ती देवा दीघायुका वण्णवन्तो सुखबहुलाति। तस्स एवं होति: ‘अहो वताहं कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा परनिम्मितवसवत्तीनं देवानं सहब्यतं उपपज्जेय्यन्ऽति। सो तं चित्तं दहति, तं चित्तं अधिट्ठाति, तं चित्तं भावेति। तस्स तं चित्तं हीने विमुत्तं, उत्तरि अभावितं, तत्रूपपत्तिया संवत्तति। कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा परनिम्मितवसवत्तीनं देवानं सहब्यतं उपपज्जति। तञ्च खो सीलवतो वदामि, नो दुस्सीलस्स। इज्झति, भिक्खवे, सीलवतो चेतोपणिधि विसुद्धत्ता।

    paranimmitavasavattī devā dīghāyukā vaṇṇavanto sukhabahulāti. Tassa evaṁ hoti: ‘aho vatāhaṁ kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā paranimmitavasavattīnaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjeyyan’ti. So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti. Tassa taṁ cittaṁ hīne vimuttaṁ, uttari abhāvitaṁ, tatrūpapattiyā saṁvattati. Kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā paranimmitavasavattīnaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati. Tañca kho sīlavato vadāmi, no dussīlassa. Ijjhati, bhikkhave, sīlavato cetopaṇidhi visuddhattā.

    ‘The Gods Who Control the Creations of Others are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.’ It occurs to them: ‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the Gods Who Control the Creations of Others!’ They settle on that idea, concentrate on it and develop it. As they’ve settled for less and not developed further, their idea leads to rebirth there. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in the company of the Gods Who Control the Creations of Others. But I say that this is only for those of ethical conduct, not for the unethical. The heart’s wish of an ethical person succeeds because of their purity.

So taṁ cittaṁ dahati, taṁ cittaṁ adhiṭṭhāti, taṁ cittaṁ bhāveti. Tassa taṁ cittaṁ hīne vimuttaṁ, uttari abhāvitaṁ, tatrūpapattiyā saṁvattati. Kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā brahmakāyikānaṁ devānaṁ sahabyataṁ upapajjati. Tañca kho sīlavato vadāmi, no dussīlassa; vītarāgassa, no sarāgassa. Ijjhati, bhikkhave, sīlavato cetopaṇidhi vītarāgattā.

    Next, someone gives to ascetics or brahmins such things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting. Whatever they give they expect back. And they’ve heard: ‘The Gods of Brahmā’s Host are long-lived, beautiful, and very happy.’ It occurs to them: ‘If only, when my body breaks up, after death, I would be reborn in the company of the Gods of Brahmā’s Host!’ They settle on that idea, concentrate on it and develop it. As they’ve settled for less and not developed further, their idea leads to rebirth there. When their body breaks up, after death, they’re reborn in the company of the Gods of Brahmā’s Host. But I say that this is only for those of ethical conduct, not for the unethical. And for those free of desire, not those with desire. The heart’s wish of an ethical person succeeds because of their freedom from desire.

    इमा खो, भिक्खवे, अट्ठ दानूपपत्तियो”ति।

    Imā kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭha dānūpapattiyo”ti.

    These are the eight rebirths by giving.”

    पञ्चमं।
