    Ten Kinds of Deeds

    “असप्पुरिसञ्च वो, भिक्खवे, देसेस्सामि, असप्पुरिसेन असप्पुरिसतरञ्च; सप्पुरिसञ्च, सप्पुरिसेन सप्पुरिसतरञ्च। तं सुणाथ …पे…।

    “Asappurisañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi, asappurisena asappurisatarañca; sappurisañca, sappurisena sappurisatarañca. Taṁ suṇātha …pe….

    “Bhikkhus, I will teach you a bad person and a worse person, a good person and a better person.

    “कतमो च, भिक्खवे, असप्पुरिसो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पाणातिपाती होति, अदिन्नादायी होति, कामेसुमिच्छाचारी होति, मुसावादी होति, पिसुणवाचो होति, फरुसवाचो होति, सम्फप्पलापी होति, अभिज्झालु होति, ब्यापन्नचित्तो होति, मिच्छादिट्ठिको होति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, असप्पुरिसो।

    “Katamo ca, bhikkhave, asappuriso? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāṇātipātī hoti, adinnādāyī hoti, kāmesumicchācārī hoti, musāvādī hoti, pisuṇavāco hoti, pharusavāco hoti, samphappalāpī hoti, abhijjhālu hoti, byāpannacitto hoti, micchādiṭṭhiko hoti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, asappuriso.

    And what is a bad person? It’s someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And they’re covetous, malicious, with wrong view. This is called a bad person.

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, असप्पुरिसेन असप्पुरिसतरो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अत्तना च पाणातिपाती होति, परञ्च पाणातिपाते समादपेति …पे… अत्तना च अभिज्झालु होति, परञ्च अभिज्झाय समादपेति; अत्तना च ब्यापन्नचित्तो होति, परञ्च ब्यापादे समादपेति, अत्तना च मिच्छादिट्ठिको होति, परञ्च मिच्छादिट्ठिया समादपेति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, असप्पुरिसेन असप्पुरिसतरो।

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, asappurisena asappurisataro? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco attanā ca pāṇātipātī hoti, parañca pāṇātipāte samādapeti …pe… attanā ca abhijjhālu hoti, parañca abhijjhāya samādapeti; attanā ca byāpannacitto hoti, parañca byāpāde samādapeti, attanā ca micchādiṭṭhiko hoti, parañca micchādiṭṭhiyā samādapeti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, asappurisena asappurisataro.

    And what is a worse person? It’s someone who kills living creatures, steals, and commits sexual misconduct. They use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. They’re covetous, malicious, with wrong view. And they encourage others to do these things. This is called a worse person.

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, सप्पुरिसो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो पाणातिपाता पटिविरतो होति …पे… अनभिज्झालु होति, अब्यापन्नचित्तो होति, सम्मादिट्ठिको होति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सप्पुरिसो।

    Katamo ca, bhikkhave, sappuriso? Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco pāṇātipātā paṭivirato hoti …pe… anabhijjhālu hoti, abyāpannacitto hoti, sammādiṭṭhiko hoti. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sappuriso.

    And what is a good person? It’s someone who doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. They don’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. And they’re contented, kind-hearted, with right view. This is called a good person.

    कतमो च, भिक्खवे, सप्पुरिसेन सप्पुरिसतरो? इध, भिक्खवे, एकच्चो अत्तना च पाणातिपाता पटिविरतो होति, परञ्च पाणातिपाता वेरमणिया समादपेति …पे… अत्तना च अनभिज्झालु होति, परञ्च अनभिज्झाय समादपेति; अत्तना च अब्यापन्नचित्तो होति, परञ्च अब्यापादे समादपेति; अत्तना च सम्मादिट्ठिको होति, परञ्च सम्मादिट्ठिया समादपेति। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सप्पुरिसेन सप्पुरिसतरो”ति।

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, sappurisena sappurisataro”ti.

    And what is a better person? It’s someone who doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. They don’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. They’re contented, kind-hearted, with right view. And they encourage others to do these things. This is called a better person.”
