Devadatta
ඒකං සමයං භගවා රාජගහේ විහරති ගිජ්ඣකූටේ පබ්බතේ අචිරපක්කන්තේ දේවදත්තේ. තත්‍ර ඛෝ භගවා දේවදත්තං ආරබ්භ භික්ඛූ ආමන්තේසි:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain, not long after Devadatta had left. There the Buddha spoke to the bhikkhus about Devadatta:
“අත්තවධාය, භික්ඛවේ, දේවදත්තස්ස ලාභසක්කාරසිලෝකෝ උදපාදි. පරාභවාය, භික්ඛවේ, දේවදත්තස්ස ලාභසක්කාරසිලෝකෝ උදපාදි.
“Possessions, honor, and popularity came to Devadatta for his own ruin and downfall.
සේය්‍යථාපි, භික්ඛවේ, කදලී අත්තවධාය ඵලං දේති, පරාභවාය ඵලං දේති; ඒවමේවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, අත්තවධාය දේවදත්තස්ස ලාභසක්කාරසිලෝකෝ උදපාදි, පරාභවාය දේවදත්තස්ස ලාභසක්කාරසිලෝකෝ උදපාදි. සේය්‍යථාපි, භික්ඛවේ, වේළු අත්තවධාය ඵලං දේති, පරාභවාය ඵලං දේති; ඒවමේවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, අත්තවධාය දේවදත්තස්ස ලාභසක්කාරසිලෝකෝ උදපාදි, පරාභවාය දේවදත්තස්ස ලාභසක්කාරසිලෝකෝ උදපාදි. සේය්‍යථාපි, භික්ඛවේ, නළෝ අත්තවධාය ඵලං දේති, පරාභවාය ඵලං දේති; ඒවමේවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, අත්තවධාය දේවදත්තස්ස ලාභසක්කාරසිලෝකෝ උදපාදි, පරාභවාය දේවදත්තස්ස ලාභසක්කාරසිලෝකෝ උදපාදි.
It’s like a banana tree, or a bamboo, or a reed, all of which bear fruit to their own ruin and downfall …
සේය්‍යථාපි, භික්ඛවේ, අස්සතරී අත්තවධාය ගබ්භං ගණ්හාති, පරාභවාය ගබ්භං ගණ්හාති; ඒවමේවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, අත්තවධාය දේවදත්තස්ස ලාභසක්කාරසිලෝකෝ උදපාදි, පරාභවාය දේවදත්තස්ස ලාභසක්කාරසිලෝකෝ උදපාදීති.
It’s like a mule, which becomes pregnant to its own ruin and downfall. In the same way, possessions, honor, and popularity came to Devadatta for his own ruin and downfall.
ඵලං වේ කදලිං හන්ති, ඵලං වේළුං ඵලං නළං; සක්කාරෝ කාපුරිසං හන්ති, ගබ්භෝ අස්සතරිං යථා”ති.
The banana tree is destroyed by its own fruit, as are the bamboo and the reed. Honor destroys a sinner, as pregnancy destroys a mule.”
