Getting Rid of Resentment (2nd)
तत्र खो आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो भिक्खू आमन्तेसि: “आवुसो भिक्खवे”ति।
Tatra kho āyasmā sāriputto bhikkhū āmantesi: “āvuso bhikkhave”ti.
There Venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus: “Friends, bhikkhus!”
“आवुसो”ति खो ते भिक्खू आयस्मतो सारिपुत्तस्स पच्चस्सोसुं। आयस्मा सारिपुत्तो एतदवोच:
“Āvuso”ti kho te bhikkhū āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṁ. Āyasmā sāriputto etadavoca:
“Friend,” they replied. Sāriputta said this:
“पञ्चिमे, आवुसो, आघातपटिविनया यत्थ भिक्खुनो उप्पन्नो आघातो सब्बसो पटिविनेतब्बो। कतमे पञ्च?
“Pañcime, āvuso, āghātapaṭivinayā yattha bhikkhuno uppanno āghāto sabbaso paṭivinetabbo. Katame pañca?
“Friends, a bhikkhu should use these five methods to completely get rid of resentment when it has arisen toward anyone. What five?
इधावुसो, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अपरिसुद्धकायसमाचारो होति परिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो; एवरूपेपि, आवुसो, पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो।
Idhāvuso, ekacco puggalo aparisuddhakāyasamācāro hoti parisuddhavacīsamācāro; evarūpepi, āvuso, puggale āghāto paṭivinetabbo.
In the case of a person whose behavior by way of body is impure, but whose behavior by way of speech is pure, you should get rid of resentment for that kind of person.
इध पनावुसो, एकच्चो पुग्गलो अपरिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो होति परिसुद्धकायसमाचारो; एवरूपेपि, आवुसो, पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो।

In the case of a person whose behavior by way of body and speech is pure, and who gets an openness and clarity of heart from time to time, you should get rid of resentment for that kind of person.
तत्रावुसो, य्वायं पुग्गलो अपरिसुद्धकायसमाचारो परिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो, कथं तस्मिं पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो? सेय्यथापि, आवुसो, भिक्खु पंसुकूलिको रथियाय नन्तकं दिस्वा वामेन पादेन निग्गण्हित्वा दक्खिणेन पादेन पत्थरित्वा, यो तत्थ सारो तं परिपातेत्वा आदाय पक्कमेय्य; एवमेवं ख्वावुसो, य्वायं पुग्गलो अपरिसुद्धकायसमाचारो परिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो, यास्स अपरिसुद्धकायसमाचारता न सास्स तस्मिं समये मनसि कातब्बा, या च ख्वस्स परिसुद्धवचीसमाचारता सास्स तस्मिं समये मनसि कातब्बा। एवं तस्मिं पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो।

Seyyathāpi, āvuso, bhikkhu paṁsukūliko rathiyāya nantakaṁ disvā vāmena pādena niggaṇhitvā1 dakkhiṇena pādena pattharitvā, yo tattha sāro taṁ paripātetvā ādāya pakkameyya; evamevaṁ khvāvuso, yvāyaṁ puggalo aparisuddhakāyasamācāro parisuddhavacīsamācāro, yāssa aparisuddhakāyasamācāratā na sāssa tasmiṁ samaye manasi kātabbā, yā ca khvassa parisuddhavacīsamācāratā sāssa tasmiṁ samaye manasi kātabbā. Evaṁ tasmiṁ puggale āghāto paṭivinetabbo.
How should you get rid of resentment for a person whose behavior by way of body is impure, but whose behavior by way of speech is pure? Suppose a bhikkhu wearing rag robes sees a rag by the side of the road. They’d hold it down with the left foot, spread it out with the right foot, tear out what was intact, and take it away with them. In the same way, at that time you should ignore that person’s impure behavior by way of body and focus on their pure behavior by way of speech. That’s how to get rid of resentment for that person.
तत्रावुसो, य्वायं पुग्गलो अपरिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो परिसुद्धकायसमाचारो, कथं तस्मिं पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो? सेय्यथापि, आवुसो, पोक्खरणी सेवालपणकपरियोनद्धा। अथ पुरिसो आगच्छेय्य घम्माभितत्तो घम्मपरेतो किलन्तो तसितो पिपासितो। सो तं पोक्खरणिं ओगाहेत्वा उभोहि हत्थेहि इतिचिति च सेवालपणकं अपवियूहित्वा अञ्जलिना पिवित्वा पक्कमेय्य। एवमेवं खो, आवुसो, य्वायं पुग्गलो अपरिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो परिसुद्धकायसमाचारो, यास्स अपरिसुद्धवचीसमाचारता न सास्स तस्मिं समये मनसि कातब्बा, या च ख्वस्स परिसुद्धकायसमाचारता सास्स तस्मिं समये मनसि कातब्बा। एवं तस्मिं पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो।
Tatrāvuso, yvāyaṁ puggalo aparisuddhavacīsamācāro parisuddhakāyasamācāro, kathaṁ tasmiṁ puggale āghāto paṭivinetabbo? Seyyathāpi, āvuso, pokkharaṇī sevālapaṇakapariyonaddhā. Atha puriso āgaccheyya ghammābhitatto ghammapareto kilanto tasito pipāsito. So taṁ pokkharaṇiṁ ogāhetvā ubhohi hatthehi iticiti ca sevālapaṇakaṁ apaviyūhitvā añjalinā pivitvā pakkameyya. Evamevaṁ kho, āvuso, yvāyaṁ puggalo aparisuddhavacīsamācāro parisuddhakāyasamācāro, yāssa aparisuddhavacīsamācāratā na sāssa tasmiṁ samaye manasi kātabbā, yā ca khvassa parisuddhakāyasamācāratā sāssa tasmiṁ samaye manasi kātabbā. Evaṁ tasmiṁ puggale āghāto paṭivinetabbo.
How should you get rid of resentment for a person whose behavior by way of speech is impure, but whose behavior by way of body is pure? Suppose there was a lotus pond covered with moss and aquatic plants. Then along comes a person struggling in the oppressive heat, weary, thirsty, and parched. They’d plunge into the lotus pond, sweep apart the moss and aquatic plants, drink from their cupped hands, and be on their way. In the same way, at that time you should ignore that person’s impure behavior by way of speech and focus on their pure behavior by way of body. That’s how to get rid of resentment for that person.
तत्रावुसो, य्वायं पुग्गलो अपरिसुद्धकायसमाचारो अपरिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो लभति च कालेन कालं चेतसो विवरं चेतसो पसादं, कथं तस्मिं पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो? सेय्यथापि, आवुसो, परित्तं गोपदे उदकं। अथ पुरिसो आगच्छेय्य घम्माभितत्तो घम्मपरेतो किलन्तो तसितो पिपासितो। तस्स एवमस्स: ‘इदं खो परित्तं गोपदे उदकं। सचाहं अञ्जलिना वा पिविस्सामि भाजनेन वा खोभेस्सामिपि तं लोळेस्सामिपि तं अपेय्यम्पि तं करिस्सामि। यन्नूनाहं चतुक्कुण्डिको निपतित्वा गोपीतकं पिवित्वा पक्कमेय्यन्ऽति। सो चतुक्कुण्डिको निपतित्वा गोपीतकं पिवित्वा पक्कमेय्य। एवमेवं खो, आवुसो, य्वायं पुग्गलो अपरिसुद्धकायसमाचारो अपरिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो लभति च कालेन कालं चेतसो विवरं चेतसो पसादं, यास्स अपरिसुद्धकायसमाचारता न सास्स तस्मिं समये मनसि कातब्बा; यापिस्स अपरिसुद्धवचीसमाचारता न सापिस्स तस्मिं समये मनसि कातब्बा। यञ्च खो सो लभति कालेन कालं चेतसो विवरं चेतसो पसादं, तमेवस्स तस्मिं समये मनसि कातब्बं। एवं तस्मिं पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो।
Tatrāvuso, yvāyaṁ puggalo aparisuddhakāyasamācāro aparisuddhavacīsamācāro labhati ca kālena kālaṁ cetaso vivaraṁ cetaso pasādaṁ, kathaṁ tasmiṁ puggale āghāto paṭivinetabbo? Seyyathāpi, āvuso, parittaṁ gopade2 udakaṁ. Atha puriso āgaccheyya ghammābhitatto ghammapareto kilanto tasito pipāsito. Tassa evamassa: ‘idaṁ kho parittaṁ gopade udakaṁ. Sacāhaṁ añjalinā vā pivissāmi bhājanena vā khobhessāmipi taṁ loḷessāmipi taṁ apeyyampi taṁ karissāmi. Yannūnāhaṁ catukkuṇḍiko nipatitvā gopītakaṁ pivitvā pakkameyyan’ti. So catukkuṇḍiko nipatitvā gopītakaṁ pivitvā pakkameyya. Evamevaṁ kho, āvuso, yvāyaṁ puggalo aparisuddhakāyasamācāro aparisuddhavacīsamācāro labhati ca kālena kālaṁ cetaso vivaraṁ cetaso pasādaṁ, yāssa aparisuddhakāyasamācāratā na sāssa tasmiṁ samaye manasi kātabbā; yāpissa aparisuddhavacīsamācāratā na sāpissa tasmiṁ samaye manasi kātabbā. Yañca kho so labhati kālena kālaṁ cetaso vivaraṁ cetaso pasādaṁ, tamevassa3 tasmiṁ samaye manasi kātabbaṁ. Evaṁ tasmiṁ puggale āghāto paṭivinetabbo.
How should you get rid of resentment for a person whose behavior by way of body and speech is impure, but who gets an openness and clarity of heart from time to time? Suppose there was a little water in a cow’s hoofprint. Then along comes a person struggling in the oppressive heat, weary, thirsty, and parched. They might think: ‘This little bit of water is in a cow’s hoofprint. If I drink it with my cupped hands or a bowl, I’ll stir it and disturb it, making it undrinkable. Why don’t I get down on all fours and drink it up like a cow, then be on my way?’ So that’s what they do. In the same way, at that time you should ignore that person’s impure behavior by way of speech and body, and focus on the fact that they get an openness and clarity of heart from time to time. That’s how to get rid of resentment for that person.
तत्रावुसो, य्वायं पुग्गलो अपरिसुद्धकायसमाचारो अपरिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो न च लभति कालेन कालं चेतसो विवरं चेतसो पसादं, कथं तस्मिं पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो? सेय्यथापि, आवुसो, पुरिसो आबाधिको दुक्खितो बाळ्हगिलानो अद्धानमग्गप्पटिपन्नो। तस्स पुरतोपिस्स दूरे गामो पच्छतोपिस्स दूरे गामो। सो न लभेय्य सप्पायानि भोजनानि, न लभेय्य सप्पायानि भेसज्जानि, न लभेय्य पतिरूपं उपट्ठाकं, न लभेय्य गामन्तनायकं। तमेनं अञ्ञतरो पुरिसो पस्सेय्य अद्धानमग्गप्पटिपन्नो। सो तस्मिं पुरिसे कारुञ्ञंयेव उपट्ठापेय्य, अनुद्दयंयेव उपट्ठापेय्य, अनुकम्पंयेव उपट्ठापेय्य: ‘अहो वतायं पुरिसो लभेय्य सप्पायानि भोजनानि, लभेय्य सप्पायानि भेसज्जानि, लभेय्य पतिरूपं उपट्ठाकं, लभेय्य गामन्तनायकं। तं किस्स हेतु? मायं पुरिसो इधेव अनयब्यसनं आपज्जीऽति। एवमेवं खो, आवुसो, य्वायं पुग्गलो अपरिसुद्धकायसमाचारो अपरिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो न च लभति कालेन कालं चेतसो विवरं चेतसो पसादं, एवरूपेपि, आवुसो, पुग्गले कारुञ्ञंयेव उपट्ठापेतब्बं अनुद्दयायेव उपट्ठापेतब्बा अनुकम्पायेव उपट्ठापेतब्बा: ‘अहो वत अयमायस्मा कायदुच्चरितं पहाय कायसुचरितं भावेय्य, वचीदुच्चरितं पहाय वचीसुचरितं भावेय्य, मनोदुच्चरितं पहाय मनोसुचरितं भावेय्य। तं किस्स हेतु? मायं आयस्मा कायस्स भेदा परं मरणा अपायं दुग्गतिं विनिपातं निरयं उपपज्जीऽति। एवं तस्मिं पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो।
Tatrāvuso, yvāyaṁ puggalo aparisuddhakāyasamācāro aparisuddhavacīsamācāro na ca labhati kālena kālaṁ cetaso vivaraṁ cetaso pasādaṁ, kathaṁ tasmiṁ puggale āghāto paṭivinetabbo? Seyyathāpi, āvuso, puriso ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno addhānamaggappaṭipanno. Tassa puratopissa dūre gāmo pacchatopissa dūre gāmo. So na labheyya sappāyāni bhojanāni, na labheyya sappāyāni bhesajjāni, na labheyya patirūpaṁ upaṭṭhākaṁ, na labheyya gāmantanāyakaṁ. Tamenaṁ aññataro puriso passeyya addhānamaggappaṭipanno. So tasmiṁ purise kāruññaṁyeva upaṭṭhāpeyya, anuddayaṁyeva upaṭṭhāpeyya, anukampaṁyeva upaṭṭhāpeyya: ‘aho vatāyaṁ puriso labheyya sappāyāni bhojanāni, labheyya sappāyāni bhesajjāni, labheyya patirūpaṁ upaṭṭhākaṁ, labheyya gāmantanāyakaṁ. Taṁ kissa hetu? Māyaṁ4 puriso idheva anayabyasanaṁ āpajjī’ti. Evamevaṁ kho, āvuso, yvāyaṁ puggalo aparisuddhakāyasamācāro aparisuddhavacīsamācāro na ca labhati kālena kālaṁ cetaso vivaraṁ cetaso pasādaṁ, evarūpepi, āvuso, puggale kāruññaṁyeva upaṭṭhāpetabbaṁ anuddayāyeva upaṭṭhāpetabbā anukampāyeva upaṭṭhāpetabbā: ‘aho vata ayamāyasmā kāyaduccaritaṁ pahāya kāyasucaritaṁ bhāveyya, vacīduccaritaṁ pahāya vacīsucaritaṁ bhāveyya, manoduccaritaṁ pahāya manosucaritaṁ bhāveyya. Taṁ kissa hetu? Māyaṁ āyasmā5 kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjī’ti. Evaṁ tasmiṁ puggale āghāto paṭivinetabbo.
How should you get rid of resentment for a person whose behavior by way of body and speech is impure, and who doesn’t get an openness and clarity of heart from time to time? Suppose a person was traveling along a road, and they were sick, suffering, gravely ill. And it was a long way to a village, whether ahead or behind. And they didn’t have any suitable food or medicine, or a competent carer, or someone to bring them within a village. Then another person traveling along the road sees them, and thinks of them with nothing but compassion, kindness, and sympathy: ‘Oh, may this person get suitable food or medicine, or a competent carer, or someone to bring them within a village. Why is that? So that they don’t come to ruin right here.’ In the same way, at that time you should ignore that person’s impure behavior by way of speech and body, and the fact that they don’t get an openness and clarity of heart from time to time, and think of them with nothing but compassion, kindness, and sympathy: ‘Oh, may this person give up bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and develop good conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. Why is that? So that, when their body breaks up, after death, they’re not reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.’ That’s how to get rid of resentment for that person.
तत्रावुसो, य्वायं पुग्गलो परिसुद्धकायसमाचारो परिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो लभति च कालेन कालं चेतसो विवरं चेतसो पसादं, कथं तस्मिं पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो? सेय्यथापि, आवुसो, पोक्खरणी अच्छोदका सातोदका सीतोदका सेतका सुपतित्था रमणीया नानारुक्खेहि सञ्छन्ना। अथ पुरिसो आगच्छेय्य घम्माभितत्तो घम्मपरेतो किलन्तो तसितो पिपासितो। सो तं पोक्खरणिं ओगाहेत्वा न्हात्वा च पिवित्वा च पच्चुत्तरित्वा तत्थेव रुक्खच्छायाय निसीदेय्य वा निपज्जेय्य वा।
Tatrāvuso, yvāyaṁ puggalo parisuddhakāyasamācāro parisuddhavacīsamācāro labhati ca kālena kālaṁ cetaso vivaraṁ cetaso pasādaṁ, kathaṁ tasmiṁ puggale āghāto paṭivinetabbo? Seyyathāpi, āvuso, pokkharaṇī acchodakā sātodakā sītodakā6 setakā supatitthā ramaṇīyā nānārukkhehi sañchannā. Atha puriso āgaccheyya ghammābhitatto ghammapareto kilanto tasito pipāsito. So taṁ pokkharaṇiṁ ogāhetvā nhātvā ca pivitvā ca paccuttaritvā tattheva rukkhacchāyāya nisīdeyya vā nipajjeyya vā.
How should you get rid of resentment for a person whose behavior by way of body and speech is pure, and who gets an openness and clarity of heart from time to time? Suppose there was a lotus pond with clear, sweet, cool water, clean, with smooth banks, delightful, and shaded by many trees. Then along comes a person struggling in the oppressive heat, weary, thirsty, and parched. They’d plunge into the lotus pond to bathe and drink. And after emerging they’d sit or lie down right there in the shade of the trees.
एवमेवं खो, आवुसो, य्वायं पुग्गलो परिसुद्धकायसमाचारो परिसुद्धवचीसमाचारो लभति च कालेन कालं चेतसो विवरं चेतसो पसादं, यापिस्स परिसुद्धकायसमाचारता सापिस्स तस्मिं समये मनसि कातब्बा; यापिस्स परिसुद्धवचीसमाचारता सापिस्स तस्मिं समये मनसि कातब्बा; यम्पि लभति कालेन कालं चेतसो विवरं चेतसो पसादं, तम्पिस्स तस्मिं समये मनसि कातब्बं। एवं तस्मिं पुग्गले आघातो पटिविनेतब्बो। समन्तपासादिकं, आवुसो, पुग्गलं आगम्म चित्तं पसीदति।
Evamevaṁ kho, āvuso, yvāyaṁ puggalo parisuddhakāyasamācāro parisuddhavacīsamācāro labhati ca kālena kālaṁ cetaso vivaraṁ cetaso pasādaṁ, yāpissa parisuddhakāyasamācāratā sāpissa tasmiṁ samaye manasi kātabbā; yāpissa parisuddhavacīsamācāratā sāpissa tasmiṁ samaye manasi kātabbā; yampi labhati kālena kālaṁ cetaso vivaraṁ cetaso pasādaṁ, tampissa tasmiṁ samaye manasi kātabbaṁ. Evaṁ tasmiṁ puggale āghāto paṭivinetabbo. Samantapāsādikaṁ, āvuso, puggalaṁ āgamma cittaṁ pasīdati.
In the same way, at that time you should focus on that person’s pure behavior by way of body and speech, and on the fact that they get an openness and clarity of heart from time to time. That’s how to get rid of resentment for that person. Relying on a person who is impressive all around, the mind becomes confident.
इमे खो, आवुसो, पञ्च आघातपटिविनया, यत्थ भिक्खुनो उप्पन्नो आघातो सब्बसो पटिविनेतब्बो”ति।
Ime kho, āvuso, pañca āghātapaṭivinayā, yattha bhikkhuno uppanno āghāto sabbaso paṭivinetabbo”ti.
A bhikkhu should use these five methods to completely get rid of resentment when it has arisen toward anyone.”
