    Worthy of Offerings Dedicated to the Gods (2nd)

    “अट्ठहि, भिक्खवे, धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु आहुनेय्यो होति …पे… अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्स। कतमेहि अट्ठहि?

    “Aṭṭhahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āhuneyyo hoti …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassa. Katamehi aṭṭhahi?

    “A bhikkhu with eight qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world. What eight?

    इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु सीलवा होति …पे… समादाय सिक्खति सिक्खापदेसु;

    Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sīlavā hoti …pe… samādāya sikkhati sikkhāpadesu;

    It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.

    बहुस्सुतो होति …पे… दिट्ठिया सुप्पटिविद्धा;

    bahussuto hoti …pe… diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā;

    They’re learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.

    आरद्धवीरियो विहरति थामवा दळ्हपरक्कमो अनिक्खित्तधुरो कुसलेसु धम्मेसु;

    āraddhavīriyo viharati thāmavā daḷhaparakkamo anikkhittadhuro kusalesu dhammesu;

    They live with energy roused up. They’re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities.

    आरञ्ञिको होति पन्तसेनासनो;

    āraññiko hoti pantasenāsano;

    They live in the wilderness, in remote lodgings.

    अरतिरतिसहो होति, उप्पन्नं अरतिं अभिभुय्य अभिभुय्य विहरति;

    aratiratisaho hoti, uppannaṁ aratiṁ abhibhuyya abhibhuyya viharati;

    They prevail over desire and discontent, and live having mastered desire and discontent whenever they arose.

    भयभेरवसहो होति, उप्पन्नं भयभेरवं अभिभुय्य अभिभुय्य विहरति;

    bhayabheravasaho hoti, uppannaṁ bhayabheravaṁ abhibhuyya abhibhuyya viharati;

    They prevail over fear and dread, and live having mastered fear and dread whenever they arose.

    चतुन्नं झानानं आभिचेतसिकानं दिट्ठधम्मसुखविहारानं निकामलाभी होति अकिच्छलाभी अकसिरलाभी;

    catunnaṁ jhānānaṁ ābhicetasikānaṁ diṭṭhadhammasukhavihārānaṁ nikāmalābhī hoti akicchalābhī akasiralābhī;

    They get the four jhānas—blissful meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.

    आसवानं खया …पे… सच्छिकत्वा उपसम्पज्ज विहरति।

    āsavānaṁ khayā …pe… sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati.

    They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.

    इमेहि खो, भिक्खवे, अट्ठहि धम्मेहि समन्नागतो भिक्खु आहुनेय्यो …पे… अनुत्तरं पुञ्ञक्खेत्तं लोकस्सा”ति।

    Imehi kho, bhikkhave, aṭṭhahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu āhuneyyo …pe… anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā”ti.

    A bhikkhu with these eight qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.”

    अट्ठमं।

    Aṭṭhamaṁ.
